Metal legends and stalwarts supergroup CrisisAct reveal blistering debut EP ‘Turn It Off’

Words by Alex Callan

An epic creation from Joe Haley/ David Haley (Psycroptic), Matt Young (King Parrot) and Brett Bamberger (Revocation).

I dare you to name an album other than ‘Turn it Off’ by CrisisAct, that is 11 songs and 10 minutes in run time.

It was a run time that even shocked me. But, although it may piss off listeners if it ever gets pressed to Vinyl, ‘Turn It Off’ does not lack any integrity by being such a concise release.

Being some kind of ‘supergroup’/amalgamation of bands, CrisisAct is easily the most intriguing Matt Young’s vocals have ever been. Blending between black metal highs and grindcore lows, his tonal changes are truly impressive.

‘Dead and Buried’ boasts incredibly fast-paced fretwork, ‘Fuck Knows If I Die’ adopts more of an old school hardcore approach as does ‘Odourious Incision’ which has riffs that lean more towards older genres like late 70’s speed metal.

With a slower tempo and a mumbled growl fuelling ‘Putrid Existence’ it really does feel as if CrisisAct came about so members from groups like King Parrot and Psycroptic could release a homage to their favourite artists whilst still giving each song a personal identity or throwback to a certain era.

The notable influence of bands such as The Black Dahlia Murder and Cro-Mags gives ‘Turn It Off’ a very unique sound and to the band’s credit, none of the songs feel like they are 50 seconds. With each song feel completed you kind of become so consumed you don’t realise how quickly it’s all about to be over.

Turn It Off is out now via Dead Set Records.
