Melbourne is getting 24 new parks as part of $154 million development project

The Victorian government have announced a $154 million development project which will see 15 new pocket parks and nine off-leash dog parks open across Melbourne. The Suburban Parks Program aims to create green, open spaces in built-up suburbs.

Opening from next year, the pocket parks will be located in South Melbourne, St Kilda, Bentleigh, Moorabbin, Brunswick, Caulfield South, Flemington, Sunshine West, Ivanhoe, Preston, Oakleigh, Prahran, Collingwood and Yarraville. The off-leash dog parks will be established in Cairnlea, Cranbourne East, Mickleham, Carrum, Rowville, Eltham North, Maribyrnong, Werribee and South Yarra.

The sites have each been chosen because they can be easily accessed by road and public transport or bike and walking trails. The Suburban Parks Program will create a total of 6,500 hectares (that’s the equivalent of over 170 Royal Botanic Gardens) of new parkland, walking and bikes trails, and pocket and dog parks.

The second phase of the development project will see $40 million dedicated to opening another seven off-leash dog parks and ten pocket parks. The program will also dedicate $10 million to revamping parks and reserves with playgrounds, landscaping, toilets and picnic spaces.

“Being stuck inside the last few months has reminded us of the value of open green space to stretch the legs, clear the head and get some fresh air – that’s what this investment delivers,” said Minister for Energy, Environment and Climate Change Lily D’Ambrosio

“We promised to establish these parks for families and their pets to enjoy – and we’re delivering,” she said. “As our suburbs continue to grow, we’re making sure people have easy access to much needed open green space to exercise, relax or just enjoy the outdoors.”
