While the list isn’t ranked, Melbourne stands out as the sole Australian representative, celebrated for its vibrant blend of coffee culture, culinary delights, artistic expression, theatrical prowess, and sporting fervour. The accolade reflects the city’s international appeal and positions it as a must-visit destination for global adventurers.

In the realm of accommodation, Melbourne offers a diverse array of options, catering to various budgets. Unlike some other major cities, Melbourne provides a more extensive selection of affordable lodging, making it an appealing choice for a broad spectrum of travellers.

The recognition follows Melbourne’s earlier triumph as the fourth-best city in Australia, New Zealand, and the South Pacific by Travel + Leisure in 2023. Additionally, it secured the title of the world’s friendliest city in 2022, further solidifying its position on the global tourism map. Melbourne’s status as a dream destination for domestic holidays is also reinforced by Roy Morgan research, underlining its popularity among Australians.

While other Australian cities didn’t make the cut in Airbnb’s list of 24 global trending destinations for 2024, domestic travellers expressed interest in locations like Rockhampton in Queensland, North Adelaide in South Australia, and Parramatta in New South Wales.

Internationally, Japanese destinations, including Kyoto, Osaka, and Tokyo’s Shibuya, captured the imagination of Australian travellers, showcasing a keen interest in exploring the Land of the Rising Sun.
