Melbourne based four-piece Mayfair Kytes have just released their new album, Animus, bringing to you what the band’s lead singer Matt Kelly describes as a “reverse breakup album”. The album consists of a range of tracks leaving you with split emotions of lightness and mournfulness, and doing so via a mix of folk, jazz, chamber music and post-rock elements. Making it a winner in most situations.
The carefully crafted, 8track album, really gives away every little detail of their hard work with the sound of an orchestra to accompany their beautiful lyrics. It has a typical Melbourne sound to it, meaning it would probably be a killer show live as well.
Their single ‘Sleepyhead’ was definitely the highlight of the album, underlining the whole feel of Animus but with a more intimate and quirky twist to it. It really embodies the band’s authenticity, which is refreshing. ‘Seasonal Thaw’ comes as a close second, even though it originally was released in 2014, opening the album with its harmonic ‘60s sound making you feel like you should be in a movie. And the harmony is consistent throughout the whole album, but with many nuances – making you discover something new every time you listen to it.
