Please note due to high demand, some of the businesses have sold out of face masks.
Face masks weren’t exactly in any style guides and predicted trends for 2020, but thanks to the global coronavirus pandemic, this is where we’re at.
Of course, social distancing is your first line of defence against the Coronavirus, but due to the second wave currently sweeping Victoria, the state government have made it mandatory for residents to wear masks when they leave their homes, following large daily increases of the pandemic this past month.
While Melbourne’s mask rules are already well in place, from midnight on Sunday, everyone in regional Victoria will also have to wear a mask or a face covering whenever they’re out of the home.
Thankfully, we’re no longer in the phase of the pandemic where only option is to grab a bandanna if you’re wanting to mask up, with many local designers making functional and stylish options.
Here’s a few of our favourites.
Trash Rags, $14
Trash Rags is the side hustle of Geelong stylist Trash Bangs, ‘just a gal with a sewing machine and no idea what she’s doing… making and upcycling Trash.’ Lucky for ya’ll, that includes making triple layered face masks with pocket for filter and elastics.
Unfortunately she can’t take pre-orders as she can only sew after hours and doesn’t want to have a backlog of requests piling up with no spare time to finish them (totally fair enough) so instead she will upload batches to her online store here as they are finished. You can stay in the loop via her Instagram page.
Greenroom Surfskatecafe

Currently available for pre-order, these masks are made with antimicrobial, nanosilver-infused fabric helps prevent bacteria and microbe growth; have 4-Way stretch fabric in a 3D pre-shaped design for personalized, custom fit; have an interior pocket for adding a filter insert (filter insert not included); and come with ultra soft elastic ear loops to gently secure the mask. They’re also lined with soft cotton jersey for breathability and comfort. Orders will be shipped as soon as the product lands in store, currently expected to be August 17.

SisterWorks, $18
Okay we said seven locals, but we just had to add an eighth. It’s not a small business per se, but SisterWorks is a not-for-profit organisation supporting female refugees, asylum seekers and migrants by providing work and empowerment through commerce – meaning we just had to add them in!
The group operates hubs in Bendigo, Richmond and Dandenong where women can attend a range of programs, all focused on learning by doing. With hubs forced to close due to lockdowns, the group began creating masks so that its community, one of the most vulnerable in Australia, could still earn an income. The masks are made from home, keeping sisters employed while social distancing.
These masks are made from donated cotton fabric and loose-weave muslin, with a pocket to insert extra layers, or a filter, and are available in a range of designs for both men and women. 50% of the profits goes directly to the migrant, refugee or asylum seeker Sister that has made the mask.
They’re not exactly local, but it’s a really great cause to get behind if you’re looking for a quality mask. They’ve also got a tonne of other great reusable products on sale as part of Plastic Free July.
You can buy them online here.
Please note. This article only lists a few small handful of the many local designers and at-home sewers producing some quality masks, and in no way are we implying these are your only options. Facebook marketplace and community groups will be your go-to if you’re wanting to look at some other options.
Be safe Forte fam.
