‘Looking Across The Bay’: The free new exhibition coming to Geelong celebrating the Goanna archives

'Looking Across The Bay: An exhibition celebrating the Goanna archives' will run from 14-20 November in Geelong.

Forty years on, and with their messages of positive engagement in Indigenous rights and environmental protection more relevant than ever, Australia’s most iconic band Goanna will bring their extensive national tour home to Geelong on Friday 18 November.

To coincide with the event, Goanna have dived deep into their incredible archives drawing out posters, memorabilia and nostalgic artefacts for Looking Across the Bay, a nostalgic exhibition to be held at THE PROJECT SPACE at Deakin Waterfront Campus.

‘It’s our heartland’: Goanna on coming home to Geelong to celebrate 40 Years of Spirit Of Place

On display from 14 to 20 November 2022, Looking Across the Bay will celebrate 40 years of Goanna’s game-changing 1982 debut album, Spirit of Place, sparking memories, stories and moments led by Goanna and their songs of social protest.

In 1982, Goanna helped forge a new Australian identity with Solid Rock lighting a fire for the rights of Aboriginal people. This was the first commercial song to use a didgeridoo and its powerful lyrics denounced the injustice Aboriginal Australia had endured. Let The Franklin Flow was a call to arms for the emerging environmental movement, becoming an anthem which is just as relevant today as it was 40 years ago.

Goanna singer-songwriter and guitarist, Shane Howard, has preserved hand-drawn posters, designs, original prints and pressings and photographs which will be shown in this exhibition.

“Be prepared to go down memory lane with this collection,” said Shane.

“From our first hand-painted poster design, to album cover art and some classic pub posters, we’ve kept it all. It’s been a fascinating journey to go through our archives and relive this artwork, some of which I haven’t seen for 40 years!”
