Last minute Mother’s Day gifts from a handful of amazing local businesses

Words by Bethany Long

Time is a'ticking in the countdown toward Mother's Day.

How do you buy a gift for the women who do so much in our lives? Every year when Mother’s Day rolls around, I never feel like any gift is doing my mum justice. She’s an absolute superstar with hilarity and wisdom in equal measure. She’s brutally honest and yet insightfully thoughtful.

So what do you get a woman like that?

My mum (much like me!) loves supporting local businesses and local artists. And with so many talented locals around, there’s almost an endless supply of great gifts. Plus, there is something so special about giving a gift that was thoughtfully handmade and getting to support the local community.

If you’re running a little behind on a Mother’s Day gift (which aren’t we all?!) here are some local businesses you can support, while also getting your mum a gorgeous piece of local handiwork.

Prefer a gift box? Spoil mum this Mother’s Day with the best local gift boxes in Geelong.

Yalang A Lang Jewels

If your Mumma bear is in need of some new jewels, you can’t go past the gorgeous designs by Yalang A Lang Jewels.

The beautifully curated collections are inspired by our native scenery (she has collections dedicated to the outback, mountains, ocean, and more!) and utilise sustainable materials sourced from the Surfcoast!

With one-of-a-kind beauties using found objects, like sea glass from Indented Head and Portarlington, there’s no more gorgeous way to give your mum a piece of home.

The whimsical and dainty rings of the Wildflower collection are my personal favourite – they add the perfect feminine finishing touch to any outfit!

Check out her work here.

Jaded Painted

A staple amongst Geelong’s local markets, Jaded Painted is your one-stop-shop for one-of-a-kind resin pieces.

Crafted by a local fashion designer, turned resin artist, Jaded Painted specialises in gorgeous resin homewares – think everything from large-scale custom artworks to marble trays, to gorgeous mirrors and terrazzo trinket trays.

With colour palettes inspired by sunsets and the ocean, these pieces are the perfect way to bring the colours of nature into your mum’s home.

Plus, she doesn’t waste her leftover resin – it goes into cute little moulds to accompany her larger pieces. Too cute!

I’ve got my eye on a blue and yellow mirror evoking the Surfcoast beaches – check out her work for yourself.

Daylesford Apothecary

Confession, I am a bath fiend. And as a bath fiend, I’ve tried out a lot of bath salts in my time, and there are none I prefer more than those crafted by Daylesford Apothecary.

Having received their Rose Quartz Bath Soak as a gift from my mum, I can attest to the fact that these make a great gift. And what’s better than giving the gift of relaxation?

These tick all the boxes, they smell divine, the Epsom salts in them help to soothe sore and tired muscles and they are all just so bloody cute!

Plus, they have a blend specifically for new mothers – their Mummy Bath Soak, which features pink Himalayan salt, Epsom salts, calendula, camomile, witch hazel, lavender, bergamot (one of my absolute fave scents!), and geranium.

Koka Pots

Ok if you aren’t on the kokedama train yet, you need to be. These gorgeous plants stem (ha!) from the Japanese tradition of garden art and are basically a plant with the roots covered in a ball of mud wrapped in twine. But, despite that very blunt and brazen description, they are some of the most beautiful and fun gifts to give any plant lover.

Just different enough from a potted plant or a bouquet of flowers, kokedama are a unique and fun addition to any home! And the perfect gift for those without the greenest of thumbs – all you need to do to water your plant is submerge in water for about 30 minutes each week or anytime it starts to feel light. Easy peasy!

Koka Pots Geelong creates stunning kokedamas in a variety of plant varieties – truly something for every plant lover.

Check out their stunning kokedama here.

Little Chief Photography

A little left-of-field, but I know one of my favourite gifts my mum received from me and my siblings on Mother’s Day was a series of professional photos of us.

Setting up a family photoshoot for your mum is a gorgeous way to create memories for years to come (and get some fab snaps for the ‘gram too!).

Little Chief takes such stunning shots and always captures the family bond so gorgeously! Seriously, check out her Insta – it’s gorgeous!

I love giving gifts that are an experience, and not only is this a wonderful family activity, but you get to keep a moment of your day forever.
