A new project by wife-and-husband team Alison Ferrier and Jeff Lang, High Ace reflects the natural synergy between the prolific and talented singer-guitarists.
During the 2020-21 lockdowns Jeff Lang and Allison Ferrier got down to work on some new projects under the name of High Ace.
For those of you who have not been paying attention, Alison Ferrier hails from London (but quite a while ago!) and has released three solo albums and most recently has been working with the highly regarded Opelousas, alongside Kerri Simpson and Anthony Shortte. Their debut album ‘Opelousified’ won Music Victoria Best Blues Album of the year.
Keep up with the latest music news, festivals, interviews and reviews here.
Over the past 30 years, Jeff Lang has won three ARIAs, collaborated with Malian Kora virtuoso Mamadou Diabate and Tabla maestro Bobby Singh in Djan Djan, and recorded and performed in India and Australia with Rajasthani Desert musicians in Maru Tarang and recorded an album with the US roots enigma Chris Whitley. He’s toured the UK, US and Europe multiple times and played extensively in Asia, including appearances in major festivals in Japan, China and India. In 2021, Jeff published his first book – Some Memories Never Die – a memoir of his life on the road.
Following on from their debut single ‘Where Where Where’, packed with violins, slide guitars and driving percussion, the duo have now released their second track ‘Leaning on my Sugar’.
Straight into it, and instantly Alison’s gutsy guitar comes through, and sets the pace for Jeff to take his guitar up and around that pulse. Their vocals work well together and with the music.
This is not Alison’s music, and it is not Jeff’s. This new project’s combined musical expressions have taken them to a place neither has been.
What we have here is a teaser track, ‘Leaning on My Sugar’, but it is absolutely teasing. I’ll be looking for the full CD.
