Geelong’s most wholesome band Seal Prince and the Roof Rats release joyous live recording

Words by Staff Writer

Geelong-based earth-lovin’ folk rockers Seal Prince and the Roof Rats will leave you inspired and on fire with their new release.

Recorded live at the ‘Earthedral’ and produced by Dave Steel, ‘Head Up Heart Out’ hones in on the core of what Seal Prince and the Roof Rats are about… connection.

Keep up with the latest music news, festivals, interviews and reviews here.

The five-piece folk/rock band, consisting of Lachie Chomley (vocals and guitar), Georgie MacLucas (fiddle, vocals), Josh Docker aka Dr. Docker (banjo, guitar, kazoo, vocals), Martin Cyster (bass) and Tom Allen (drums), write divine songs about the earth, finding oneself, masculinity and generally wholesome subjects with ‘Head Up Heart Out’ being no different.

Following on from their 2022 album Threads To Follow, an album which saw them weave a rich tapestry of stories about wildness, love, masculinity, place-making through giving voice to ongoing social and environmental struggles in suburban Geelong, as well as the beauty and resilience of their place and community on Wadawurrung country ‘Head Up Heart Out’ conveys just as strong a message.

“This song is a re-vitalising shoulder-rub for anyone struggling to find their way in these troubled times…” says Lachie Chomley, aka Seal Prince. “It’s a hopeful tonic, instilling the faith that us humans can find our way back to connection… with ourselves, each other and the land.”

The full band live take and accompanying video capture the dynamism and energetic presence of Chomley and the rats… not to mention the horn section. That’s right, a horn section was enlisted to heighten the valued messaged on ‘Head Up Heart Out’.
