Words by Staff Writer

Archive Wine Bar's Archive Academy is the only provider in Geelong offering these courses and one of only four in Australia to offer these qualifications.

In a groundbreaking move, Geelong’s Archive Wine Bar emerges as the sole provider in the region, and one of only four in Australia, to offer the esteemed Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET) Level 1 and Level 2 Awards in Beer.

Beginning this month, Archive Wine Bar will pioneer the delivery of these courses, catering to both trade professionals and beer enthusiasts eager to broaden their understanding of the beverage. This is in addition to it’s already popular Wine Courses offered by Archive Academy and now marks a significant stride for Geelong’s culinary and educational landscape, positioning the city as a hub for comprehensive drinks education.

Sarah Andrew, WSET’s Head of APP Development, APAC, expressed her enthusiasm, stating, “We have identified Australia as the most important market to launch our WSET beer qualifications in the Asia Pacific region, based on production and consumer engagement. Harnessing our experience as leaders in global drinks education, our new Level 1 and 2 Awards in Beer will bring a unique and interactive approach to tasting and learning.”

WSET’s Level 1 and Level 2 Awards in Beer promise to revolutionise beer education, drawing upon over 50 years of educational expertise. Developed by industry stalwarts Sara Hobday and Mirella Amato, the courses boast a comprehensive curriculum covering beer production methods, tasting techniques, and food pairings.

Jayne Lewis, WSET Business Development Manager for Beer, highlighted the global recognition and reputation of WSET qualifications, stating, “WSET’s introduction of beer courses in Australia fills a critical gap in the market. These courses offer a structured syllabus coupled with hands-on tasting experiences, catering to the burgeoning interest in craft beer.”

Graham Sutherland, Director of Archive Wine Bar, expressed his excitement about the initiative, affirming, “The introduction of WSET’s beer courses promises an exciting new chapter for the Australian beer industry. In alignment with WSET’s broader mission, these courses will meet the demand for more formal education to bolster expertise and confidence. “Collaboration with breweries and beer appreciation groups will foster knowledge, opportunities and drive new growth within the industry.

Furthermore, the hospitality sector stands to gain immensely, as trained experts equipped with fundamental understanding and a shared language will engage customers with confidence. We are so excited to be part of this landmark initiative to help shape a more informed, dynamic and sustainable beer sector for the future.”

The addition of beer qualifications to WSET’s portfolio underscores the organisation’s commitment to providing industry-leading education across diverse beverage categories. As Geelong’s Archive Wine Bar takes the lead in offering these courses, it cements the city’s position as a trailblazer in drinks education.
