Geelong residents discover family secrets and hidden histories in new SBS series ‘The Secret DNA of Us’

words by staff writer

Ever wondered what hidden family secrets are buried in your DNA? Well, now’s your chance to find out. Geelong is one of the towns featured in a brand new SBS series, The Secret DNA of Us, where everyday Aussies take part in mass DNA tests and uncover shocking, wild, and sometimes downright royal connections.

Premiering on Thursday 17 April at 7:30pm on SBS, with the Geelong episode to air on 1 May, the show follows host Marc Fennell, journalist Rae Johnston, and ancestry expert Brad Argent as they dig deep into the DNA of four Australian communities: Geelong, Bairnsdale (Vic), Surry Hills (NSW), and Bathurst (NSW).

What they uncover along the way is jaw-dropping—family connections, unknown ethnicities, and family mysteries that you could never imagine.

Geelong’s episode promises to reveal some eye-opening surprises, as residents find out more about their heritage than they ever expected.

According to Marc Fennell, the discoveries are truly one of a kind. “You may not realise it but each of us carry a global saga within our DNA. Nothing could’ve prepared me for what this show uncovers. Expect everything from royal connections to criminal conspiracies and breathtaking feats of human survival and triumph. This is the story of Australia like I’ve never seen before. I can’t wait for viewers to join the ride.”

The Secret DNA of Us takes a fresh approach to uncovering history, using DNA testing to bring to light astonishing details about Australia’s past. It’s a chance for Geelong locals (and anyone watching from home) to connect with their roots in a way they never thought possible.

Catch the premiere of The Secret DNA of Us on SBS from Thursday 17 April at 7:30pm, with each episode available to stream for free on SBS On Demand.

And if you need subtitles, they’ve got you covered with options in Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Arabic, Vietnamese, and Korean.
