Geelong Heritage Wine Walk

Start your Saturday right by sipping, savouring and strolling from location to location amongst wine-loving friends.

The Geelong Heritage Wine Walk is back on February 11, where the streets, laneways and footpaths of Geelong CBD will come alive as a hand-picked selection of the best heritage buildings open their doors, transforming into the ultimate cellar door experience.

Promising a fresh, self-guided wine tasting experience, the Wine Walk is an afternoon out that you and your friends won’t want to miss. There will be unique wines from the 14 of the best wine producers including the likes of Scotchmans Hill, Jack and Jill, Leura Park Estate, Jack Rabbit, Flying Brick Cider Co, Terindah and Austins and Co, among others. This year also sees the addition of a Whisky bar, cider tasting, music and a market.

After last year’s success raising over $18,000 for the APCO foundation, Sharon Gleeson, APCO Foundation Chairperson, says the aim is to make the event the highlight of the Geelong summer calendar – and all you need to do is turn up.

“Walkers need to bring themselves, a few friends and be ready to make some new ones! The walk is about a three kilometer round trip, so quite doable for many people. You don’t need to be a marathon runner to complete it, but it’s enough to enjoy the Geelong CBD and justify the wine tasting!”

The wine walk visits seven of Geelong’s favourite heritage venues: Customs House, Dennys Kitchen, Wah Wah Gee, Geelong Library, Geelong Gallery, Geelong Club and Costa Hall.

“The venues are all unique and beautiful. Dennys Kitchen is located in a magnificent old building and we have the contrast with the new library which house the Geelong Heritage Centre on the fourth floor. The heritage listed Customs house, Wah Wah Gee on the pier, the proud old Geelong Club, Costa Hall in the Deakin Building and of course we add some culture with the Geelong Gallery where you can wander around their exhibits.”

You choose the starting point, then simply walk to the other heritage sites from there. At your starting point, you will be given your tools for the day – a glass, a wristband and a city map! Along the way, you can sample wine with canapes to match (think cheese).

The hot tip is to plan ahead and book into dinner at one of the venues and continue into the evening with tasty food, more wine and good vibes.

The money raised goes to the APCO communities to families and projects that need support.

“Over the past 12 months we have donated to Wye River Fires, Barwon health, A night for Angus, Cottage by the Sea, Cops n kids, Trickey Twins Trust, Barwon Health, Motor neurone, Andrew love centre, Burrombuttock Hay Runners and many more.”

What better way to start your weekend then with a walk – and one which involves wine. Gather your friends for this self-guided tasting tour and help raise money for the people who need it most.
