Geelong favourite’s Korean restaurant Donco reopens on Pakington Street with a fresh new concept

The food Donco is well known for.

Donco has reopened as a Korean and Japanese home-meal inspired milk bar.

Earlier this year, the duo behind Pakington Street’s acclaimed Korean restaurant Donco closed up shop and moved to the Geelong CBD with a new name, fresh look and delicious fare.

Taking over an iconic space originally functioning as a Baptist church, the Powerhouse chef-and-front-of-house combination of Don Koh and Yunie Choi opened Surreal, gifting Geelong a brand-new and incredibly opulent dining destination. Here, experiences are curated by the duo and their A-team of creative and multi-cultured individuals, with a menu that exhibits and shows a new style of foods, drinks, and art by embracing diversity and cultures.

Keep up with the latest food and booze news across the region here.

Surreal is the dreamy new restaurant in the heart of Geelong from the Donco team

While Surreal certainly filled the gap that Donco left, and even taking it one step further for its food, its design, and its individuality, the power couple has been busily working behind the scenes on giving the Pakington Street venue a new lease on life.

Utilising the same skills that saw Donco become one of Geelong’s most beloved dining destinations, filling a niche and tapping into their Korean heritage, Don and Yunie have transformed Donco into a Korean and Japanese home meal-inspired milk bar, ‘My Favourite Things’.

Reopening on Tuesday, August 23, My Favourite Things promises to become a go-to destination for getting your hands on the best bits from the beloved Korean fusion restaurant as well as some new and inspired dishes. It’s all about creating fresh and warm-hearted foods that feel just like a homemade meal.

Currently operating as takeaway only (at this stage), the menu has something for everyone. There’s the Bibimbab Kit, Onigiri, Gimbab, and a hero dish, Don’s Favourite Korean Fried Chicken, available with their soy garlic, sea salt and mayo or Sweet chilli.

The Favourite Trays are sure to be a winning addition, boasting a favourite selection of side dishes with the main protein you pick. The option is a healthy and complete meal inspired by Korean and Japanese home dishes and is a clear nod to the venues new name. Think beef bulgogi, beef and pork Ttoek Kalbi, Korean fried chicken, lightly battered Tofu and Mushroom, and Japanese Pork Cha Shu. All the trays come with steamed white rice, Kimchi coleslaw, and Japanese macaroni.

Trays are also available for the kids, with Beef Bulgogi and Korean Fried Chicken alongside pickled veggies, white steamed rice and small fruit.

If you’re looking for a quick snack, there’s crispy Lotus root chips, creamy crab croquettes, fried Korean dumplings, Korean style Sauerkraut, seaweed salad, soy braised egg, Yuzu white Kimchi, and potato corn croquettes, among other items.

Sounds pretty great right? We sure think so! While you’ll only be able to pick up delicious takeaway foods here, if you’re looking to dine-in their sister venue Surreal is THE place to go.

My Favourite Things is located at 13/321 Pakington Street, Newtown and is open for takeaway 11am-2pm, 5:30pm-8pm Tuesday to Friday, 5:30-8pm Saturdays. Call 0411 116 418.
