Famed in Tasmania and Geelong, Japanese restaurant Kosaten opens in Ballarat

Kosaten

This Japanese restaurant takes dining into the age of the future with its quirky inventiveness and playful style.

Becoming one of Tasmania’s most renowned Japanese restaurants with its unique take on the traditional sushi train eatery, Kosaten Japanese Restaurant has officially opened in Ballarat, taking over a space on Sturt Street.

An absolute must-visit with sister restaurants in Hobart, Launceston and Geelong, Kosaten boasts a sushi train, based on the traditional Japanese sushi train restaurant, though instead of selecting from a stream of dishes as they travel past, you order from an a la carte menu via an iPad.

Keep up with the latest food and booze news across the region here.

Conceived by business partners Michael Zhang and Kazuhiro Kojima, Kosaten struck a chord with diners thanks to its unique and playful take on traditional sushi train eatery that is popular in Japan. Taking a more personalised approach, at Kosaten, the diners are in charge. Instead of selecting from a stream of dishes as they travel past, you order from an a la carte menu via an iPad and the dishes and drinks are delivered directly from the kitchen to you via a train. Shinkansen-style.

Marking their fourth restaurant, Ballarat’s Kosaten offers creative dishes blend the modern and traditional Japanese culinary style, using the best local produce wherever possible. From nigiri and sushi rolls to vegetarian delights, there is something for everyone on the appealing menu. You’ll also find oysters, Tataki, sashimi, fried prawns, Soba salad, Miso soup, and Edamame. There’s even Pork Belly, tuna salad, a wakame salad (Japanese style seaweed salad) and Japanese fried chicken, and they cater for vegans, vegetarians and those who are gluten-free, so it’s a good time all around. Check out the full Ballarat menu here.

You’ll also find some oh-so-delicious sake on the drinks list, alongside a range of beer, wine and cider. It’s of course the dessert that has our mouths watering, with homemade yuzu cake, pannacotta and a chocolate spring roll. Yum!

As for the venue itself, you’ll blue hues, exposed brick, neon lights, as well as a pop of bright colours, geometric designs and intimate booth seating, all of which add to the unique and truly enjoyable dining experience.

Specializing in sushi and boasting the neon and vibrancy of Japanese culture, with flavours that are equally fresh and bright on the plate, get a taste of this fun and interactive dining experience that’s casual and fancy, cheap and quick (in a good way).

You’ll find the venue at 30 Sturt Street, Ballarat. Visit them on Facebook and Instagram for regular updates.
