Hugo T Armstrong, also known for his roles as a festival director, promoter, and radio personality, stands out as a true luminary in the blues world. His dedication to promoting and fostering blues music in Victoria has earned him this esteemed title of Industry Icon.

The Blues Train, conceived by Armstrong in 1994, has become a pioneering and unforgettable experience for music enthusiasts. What started as a part of a winter concert series has evolved into a globally recognised event, with a majestic steam train pulling carriages of blues lovers along the Bellarine railway.

Reflecting on the inception of The Blues Train, Armstrong noted that little did they know that this unique experience would continue for over three decades. The Blues Train has entertained over 350,000 people, hosting performances from artists around the world and supporting the blues community.

Queenscliff’s legendary Blues Train has hit the market for the first time ever

Armstrong, born in Point Lonsdale and educated at The Geelong College, has left an indelible mark on the Victorian Music & Events Industry. His impressive career includes roles at PBS 106.7 FM, where he held various positions, culminating in a four-year stint as the Program Manager.

Beyond The Blues Train, Armstrong served as the Artistic Director and Manager of the Queenscliff Music Festival from 1998 to 2002, earning accolades for his service to the music industry and the community. His extensive experience in event management, music programming, and public speaking has made him a well-known figure in the industry.

The list of Armstrong’s achievements extends to his chairmanship of Bellarine Tourism, his role in the development of the Bellarine Taste Trail, and his participation in various advisory groups and committees aimed at revitalizing and sustaining the music and tourism sectors in Victoria.

Accolades, including the Centenary of Federation Medal and lifetime memberships to PBS and the Queenscliff Music Festival, underscore Armstrong’s enduring commitment to the blues. His influence reaches beyond the stage, as evidenced by his advocacy for the Victorian music and tourism industries.

On the 29th of November 2023, at the MEMO Music Hall, Armstrong will join the ranks of blues legends as he is officially inducted into the BMV Hall of Fame as the 2023 Industry Icon.

Alongside Armstrong, BMV will induct ARIA winner and master blues harmonica player and band leader – the internationally renowned Ian Collard into the Hall of Fame as another 2023 Industry Icon.
