Bendigo Writers Festival returns to the heart of central Victoria this May

Nick Hornby

Such is Life. And such is Bendigo Writers Festival ’23, a packed program of excellent writers presenting memorable discussions from every possible angle – just like life.

Published in 1903, Such is Life: Being Certain Extracts from the Diary of Tom Collins is a novel by Australian author Joseph Furphy, perhaps the country’s first acclaimed novelist. Telling a fictional account of rural dwellers in southern New South Wales and Victoria in the 1880s (the name Tom Collins is slang for tall story), the title of the book is said to have been derived from the alleged last words of Ned Kelly.

It so happens it is these three words that set the theme for 2023’s Bendigo Writers Festival which returns to Central Victoria May 4-7 this year.

Keep up with the latest in local news and entertainment here.

The Bendigo Writers Festival was established in 2011 with the aim to create a diverse and inclusive event that not only showcased the city, but the beauty of words. More than a decade later, it is one of the most popular events on Bendigo’s full calendar.

This year, some 70 events and 120 writers will participate. A tip: make sure to clear some space on your bedside table as Bookish Bendigo hosts the Festival Bookshop, which will be located in the Banquet Room of The Capital Theatre.

Announcements will continue to be made, but already lined up is the very special highlight of an onscreen sit-down between Benjamin Law and Nick Hornby. As of 2018, Nick Hornby has sold more than five million books worldwide. His most known work is arguably 1995’s High Fidelity, the story of 35-year-old record shop owner Rob Fleming and his quest to discover the reason for his failed relationships. The book was later adapted into a film, Broadway musical and TV series. Hornby’s other works include About a Boy and Fever Pitch.

Early bird tickets will be available from next month. Further information is available through bendigowritersfestival.com.au.
