Marking the birth of Australian Democracy, Ballarat is throwing a free family event.
A pivotal moment in not only Ballarat’s gold-mining history but in establishing the Australian political system, the Eureka Stockade is marking its 170th anniversary. The rebellion of gold miners against the corrupt colonial government impacted the attitudes towards equality and democracy in the governing of Australia for the years to come.
Marking the significant milestone at the symbolic Eureka Stockage Memorial Park is an afternoon of free live music and entertainment for the family. Taking place on Sunday 1 December from 1pm – 4pm, the community celebration titled Eureka Sunday Live will honour the significant historic event.

Eureka Sunday Live will feature performances from Australian rock royalty, frontman of Geelong-established social protest band, Goanna, Shane Howard along with Australian queen of soul Emma Donovan in her duo arrangement. In his own right, Howard has 14 solo albums to his name to go alongside the three celebrated Goanna albums, including the 1982 beast Spirit of Place which birthed the anthemic ‘Solid Rock’. Howard is sure to play both classics and hits from his latest offering, the 2020 Dark Matter.
Emma Donovan is a force on the music front. Alongside band The Putbacks, Donovan has earnt acclaim for her powerful voice, insightful songwriting and energetic live performances. Her latest album Till My Song Is Done earnt recognition for her poignant storytelling whilst capturing the legacy of her country roots. Donovan has been touring the country with the album, racking up nominations for awards including the ARIA’s and is sure to wow on the stage for the community celebration.
The event will also include free face painting for the kinds, kids crafts and lawn activities to go along with the live music. Bring your picnic blanket, camping chairs and Eureka Spirit to celebrate the anniversary.
Bookings are not required for Eureka Sunday Live – simply turn up and claim your stake on the grass area to enjoy the entertainment. This is just one of the exciting and educational events running as part of the 170 year celebration.
