Are you the next Spielberg or Nolan? The 48 Hour Film Frenzy is calling your name!

Words by Staff Writer

And action...Geelong Waterfront Film to make waves with their 48 Hour Film Frenzy filmmaker event in October.

Geelong Waterfront Film continues its mission of fostering Geelong’s film industry by promoting Geelong and surrounds as an unequalled filming destination. As they continue in the development of regional filmmakers, they are bringing high-energy real-time filmmaking event, the ’48 Hour Film Frenzy’ shootout to Geelong.

Taking place from October 11-13, 2024, this exciting event sees filmmakers from across Australia descend on Geelong to create 4–7-minute films that highlight the region. As the name suggests, films must be created, produced and submitted within 48 hours.

48 Hour Film Frenzy

  • When: 11 – 13 October 2024
  • Where: Content to be created in Geelong, with one destination to be stipulated by the committee
  • Register: Enter here.

Stay up to date with what’s happening within the region’s art scene here.

In an age where content can be created in the palm of your hand, and social media adds to a high-turnaround of content, this event will put budding filmmakers to the test. Open to filmmakers of all ages and skill levels including professionals, students and others with a passion for filmmaking, the 48 Hour Film Frenzy challenges participants to tell a short and sharp story of our region.

Shooting can be completed with professional equipment or just an iPhone, and you can be a lone wolf or recruit a team to pull it together – just keeping in mind you’ll need to write a story, find a cast and crew and shoot and edit your short in a weekend! It doesn’t matter how you do it as long as your product is good!

The direction of the short film is all yours, Director! Do you want to build a beautiful romance tale with a meet-cute set on our stunning Barwon River, or maybe it’s a comedy, a horror, a drama or even a mesh of all of the above? The only criteria that participants need to work towards and include are:

  • A KEY PROP – you will be provided with a key prop that must feature in the film.
  • A LINE OF DIALOGUE – film-makers will be given a line of dialogue that has to be said verbatim in their film.
  • LOCATION – a Geelong location will be provided that one scene must be filmed at.

These details will be told at the opening on the Friday night. Additionally film planning can start in a advance but the filming and editing must all be completed within the 48 hour time frame. To support participants, Geelong Waterfront Film will host a workshop in the lead up to the event. This workshop will be facilitated by industry professionals and offers a chance for newcomers to learn from industry experts.

What follows is even more exciting than the shooting – seeing your work on the big screen. All films meeting the criteria will be screened in local cinemas and shared worldwide on digital platforms. Celebrities from the film industry will honour filmmakers with various awards and the inaugural Geelong Waterfront Film – ’48 Hour Film Frenzy Laurel’. Multiple prize categories will be awarded for Best Film in various categories.
