Geelong gallery changes its name to reflect artistic and business direction

Words by Staff Writer

Ryrie Street gallery and collective community Hue and Cry Gallery is no more: in name anyway. Meet Liminal Gallery and Lab.

This week has seen major changes in Geelong’s art scene. After awarding their annual art prize over the weekend to a worthy Tim Shea for Homer Simpson meets Ronald McDonald oil canvas Dream Job, local Geelong gallery and arts institution Hue and Cry made a special announcement.

Taking immediate effect, Hue and Cry would be dissolved and rebranded to a name that better reflects the artistic and business direction of the arts collective. Owners Corey and Harriet revealed during the art prize ceremony’s formalities that moving forward Hue and Cry would operate under new banner, Liminal Gallery and Lab.

In a post to social media the following day, their new lilac branding of Liminal Gallery and Lab was unveiled with a statement about the new beginnings.

“It is with great pleasure that we share the news that was announced last night at the art prize exhibition opening.

Going forward, we will be changing our name from Hue and Cry Gallery to Liminal Gallery and Lab.

This change has been a long time coming and we feel that our new name reflects the direction we are taking the gallery.

We have also pulled our on-site film lab (Analogue Academy), under the same name for more consistency through our brand.”

It continued to address the changes moving forward as they enter their new Liminal Gallery and Lab era.

“We will be changing this account over to our new name very shortly so please remember to look up Liminal Gallery Geelong when searching for us going forward. You can also go and follow our film lab account @liminallab_geelong

We would like to give a massive shout out to @chrisdehoogartist for his vision and hard work in helping to turn our ideas for Liminal Gallery and Lab in to everything you will see going forward. We also thank Chris for his hard work in designing us an incredible new website which will be launched shortly and we cannot wait to share with you.

The changes will be made slowly to help everyone catch up with our news but get sharing and spreading the news!”

Under Hue and Cry, the artist-run Ryrie Street gallery built a collective of local artists and art-makers, sharing studio space, hosting regular exhibitions, life drawing classes and workshops, elevating the local arts ecology. With a focus on unlocking artists visions, the commercial gallery strived to push the boundaries of contemporary art exploration. They adopted photography hub Analogue Academy during their unforeseen premise closure, with the two arts institutions now combining under the one umbrella.

As they morph into the Liminal Gallery and Lab form, the intention is to continue supporting the local arts community, and push the envelop of contemporary art. We’re excited to see where they go!
