The awards, now in their fourth year, recognise trending destinations for the year ahead based on their accommodation quality, affordability, traveller satisfaction and appealing activities and attractions. Using reviews and price points on its site Wotif has condensed its findings into the top 10 towns in Australia. Putting the spotlight on destinations that have met the changing needs of travellers over the last 12 months, this recognition comes at a pivotal time for Aussies as tourism operators continue to navigate through a difficult time for the industry.

Taking out the top spot in the awards, Cairns has been crowned the number one town in Australia thanks to its resort-like lagoons, warm sunny weather and gateway to the majestic Great Barrier Reef, while Pokolbin in New South Wales scored second place for its indulgence and relaxation value.

It’s the inclusion of regional favourite Apollo Bay that has injected a sense of pride within the region, with the coastal town coming in at third place. Located midway along the majestic Great Ocean Road, in the shelter of Cape Otway and on the lowest slopes of the beautiful Otway ranges, the bay is a haven for water lovers and adventure travellers.

Whether you’re there to hit the waters of the southern ocean, wander the coast and explore petrified rainforests full of waterfalls, ferns and crystal clear streams or just enjoy the fruits of the sea caught by local fishermen, this coastal gem has everything day-trippers and weekend travellers need.

“Come for the great outdoors but stay for the delicious fresh produce. Surrounded by endless beaches, walking trails, and the Great Otway National Park, Apollo Bay is a top place to base yourself while exploring the Great Ocean Road,” says Wotif.

Joining these top destinations, NSW dominated the list with Mudgee, Port Macquarie and The Entrance also landing in the top 10, alongside Victoria’s Lakes Entrance, South Australia’s McLaren Vale, Queensland’s Hervey Bay, and Western Australia’s Exmouth. Interestingly, Tasmania, the NT and the ACT all missed out on a gong.
