A mouthwatering international dumpling festival is heading to Melbourne next month

WORDS BY KAYA MARTIN

What could be better than delicious things wrapped in dough? Try a whole festival devoted to delicious things wrapped in dough.

There’s something so joyful about biting into a dumpling. Personally, I think it’s all about the mystery – you can’t tell what’s concealed beneath the soft, pillowy dough until you take a big ol’ bite. Is it minced meat and spices? Black sesame and sugar? Ricotta and spinach? Only time will tell.

It seems there are many who share my opinion about the delight of dumplings because almost every culture has its own variation. Deep-fried samosas, boiled-and-pan-fried pierogies, and juicy steamed xiao long bao may seem like they’re worlds apart, but on March 22, they’ll be brought together under one roof as punters gather to celebrate the beloved snack at the return of the Melbourne International Dumpling Festival.

Melbourne International Dumpling Festival

  • The event will take place at the Queen Victoria Market on March 22 from 4pm to 10pm
  • It will celebrate mouth-watering dumplings from all over the world
  • Tickets are free with online registration

Keep up with the latest food and booze news across the region here.

Whether you’re on the hunt for manti, momo, mandu, or matzo balls, you’ll be spoilt for choice at the QVM. Already known for being a multicultural culinary meeting place, the market will make the perfect host for vendors to show off what they’ve got, especially with the Society of Language and Culture (Solangture) directing the show.
