A Melbourne favourite is bringing its signature Korean fried chicken to Geelong with a new store this year

Gami Chicken & Beer opens in Waurn Ponds this September.

Hailed as some of the ‘best-fried chicken in Melbourne’ for a number of years now (seriously Google it), Gami Chicken & Beer has its sights set on bringing their signature Korean fried chicken to Geelong this year.

The key takeaways

  • GAMI Chicken and Beer is opening a flagship Geelong store
  • The restaurant will offer both dine-in, takeaway and home delivery service
  • Gami will open the Waurn Ponds store in September

Keep up with the latest food and booze news via our website.

Since Gami started out in 2006 at Carnegie (Melbourne’s unofficial ‘Little Korea’) by four friends from university, Gami has sprouted up in a whopping 21 locations around Victoria, becoming one of the most loved fried chicken and beer shops around.

Now the moguls are looking to expand into new areas, opening a flagship Geelong store at Waurn Ponds Shopping Centre in September.

Cooked to order using the highest quality ingredients, Gami Fried Chicken is made with a unique golden-ratio 17 herbs-mixed seasoning and comes in four distinct flavours—original, sweet chilli, spicy and garlic and honey—you can settle for just one or grab half and half if you can’t decide.

Gami is also commended for thinking of the vegos with the fried soy meat option. The chook-less option uses the same crispy batter as above, and is particularly good with the spicy sauce.

The KGC will be a main feature at the Geelong store, which will offer both dine-in, takeaway and home delivery service, alongside a whole bunch of Korean goodies on offer like fish cake soup, dumplings, chicken ribs, potato heaven, cheese sticks and kimchi pancakes if you’re not in the mood for fried chicken.

There will also be 10 choices of beer on offer including their own speciality beer, as well as five Korean wine options, cider and a selection of non-alcoholic beverages.

The dedicated chicken business revealed in the application to City of Greater Geelong that its goal was to provide a truly modern and unique eating experience for the Greater Geelong City community.

“The business itself will provide Korean fried chicken and beer served together as a meal and offers a variety of side dishes to accommodate every patron.

“GAMI is providing a fun and safe family environment and will exercise all our due diligence successfully be a part of the Greater Geelong business community and assist each other where required.”

According to the plans, the business would offer 56-seats (32 patrons indoor and 24 patrons outdoor), serving seated patrons only – no bar or standing area will be available.

The restaurant is located opposite Coles and would be open 11am to 11pm daily.

With construction already underway, Gami plans to open the Waurn Ponds store in September and they better be bringing their newest menu item, the ‘Corndue’ AKA the ultimate chicken and cheese fondue. Featuring 16 pieces of chicken wings surrounding a bowl of melted corn-based cheese, ripe for the dipping, it sounds like the perfect post-lockdown treat.

Brb, dreaming of chicken and cheese.
