9 places serving takeaway pancakes to satisfy your sweet tooth

Words by Talia Rinaldo

Batter up!

There’s nothing better than settling into the day with a deliciously comforting breakfast. Specifically, pancakes! From a stack of thick and fluffy buttermilk pancakes to light and delicate ricotta pancakes to a luxurious Dutch baby pancake — they all fit the bill.

While I’m particularly fond of the classic strawberries and cream fluffy three stack, my absolute favourite type of pancake is the kind that isn’t cooked by me.

Seriously, my dense, flat, flavourless, fall-apart pancakes can go flip off.

Staring at the absolute fail that was my breakfast last weekend, I started feeling awfully nostalgic for last month when I was out enjoying a humble brunch with my favourite humans at our favourite cafes in Geelong – back when restrictions had eased and regional Victoria had a swift dose of normality.

Thankfully, I don’t have to rely on my cooking skills for the next few weeks of isolation, as it turns out a fair share of Geelong’s breaky hotspots have pivoted to takeaway, serving up some of their best dessert-for-breakfast dishes for at-home consumption. Here they are:

Blank Space Newtown
This Newtown café has quickly become a front-runner in the G-town breaky game.

Serving up exceptional takeaway St Ali coffee daily from 7am (and 8am on Sunday), Blank Space has made their entire menu available to-go during this stage 3 lockdown, including their Apple Pie hotcakes which are seriously next level. Made with stewed apples, vanilla ice cream, caramel sauce, and oat crumble, this dish is just begging to be ‘grammed and eaten, of course.

Call or text 0434 117 988 to pre- order and pick up at 4/343 Pakington Street, Newtown.

King of the Castle
KOTC never fails to hit the cravings, especially now with their hotcakes! Trading takeaway only now, you can truly spoil yourself with their vegan chocolate banana hotcakes. Covered in peanut butter ganache, maple roasted peanut praline and dark fudge sauce, this little beauty truly gives you that choccy belly warming hug that we all need right now. Bless you, KOTC, bless you.

Call 03 5223 1341 from 6:30-1pm Monday to Saturday and from 7.30am on Sunday to place your order. Pick up at 24 Pakington Street, Geelong West, and don’t forget to grab a coffee for the drive home.

Paper Cup & Co
Located in Westfield, this little gem is open for takeaway from Monday to Sunday 9am-4pm, and have two delicious pancake options on the menu.

Firstly, the fluffy buttermilk pancakes are a treat, served with strawberries, blueberries and vanilla ice cream, and secondly, there’s the Oreo & Nutella Pancake for all the chocoholics out there. Can’t choose? Treat yo’self to both.

They are open for walk-in takeaway from 8:30am weekdays and 9am weekends. You can also pre-order via 0433269615 and you’ll also find them on UberEats and Deliveroo if you’d rather not leave the house!

John Doe Specialty Coffee
Situated on Ryrie Street, this little coffee haunt has been a long-time favourite amongst locals and thank goodness, they’re still operating takeaway.

Taking orders via Deliveroo, you don’t even have to get out of bed to indulge in their sweet ricotta pancakes, served with seasonal fruits, honeycomb, pistachio, maple syrup and butter.

Top it off with a caramel milkshake and you’ll be riding that sugar high all day long.

They’ll be open for all your hotcake needs from 7am – 3pm Monday to Friday.

Panache Café and Creperie
While the thick, fluffy pancakes usually dominate café menus, a crêpe (or crepe) are also worthy of a mention, considering they’re a type of very thin pancake, usually filled or covered with sweet, sugary goodness.

You’ll usually find these at Panache Cafe and Creperie, a local Geelong family-owned and run business. Adapting back to takeaway recently, the Waterfront location are actually slinging some delicious on-the-go goodies from their limited crepe menu.

You can choose from their sweet, citrusy and piping hot Lemon Sugar crepe; their Strawberry Crepe with sliced strawberries, Yarra Valley jam and maple syrup; the Apple Danish crepe made up of cinnamon, apple, almonds, sultanas and maple syrup; and their Go Bananas crepe, with sweet golden banana and maple syrup.

Our mouths are already watering.

You can pick up your treats to go from the Waterfront Location at 5/6-8 Eastern Beach Road, Geelong from 8am-5pm. Phone 03 5222 8848

2 Chefs Geelong
What’s better than one chef? 2 Chefs Geelong is a community-focused café and restaurant that strives to create a good nutritious and delicious Australian modern food paired with exceptional coffee in the heart of Geelong CBD.

While they’re currently operating takeaway, we can still enjoy a delicious serving of their hotcakes! With mascarpone, raspberries, passionfruit curd, and seeds, these babies are worth the short drive.

They’re open 7am-3pm Monday to Friday, except for Wednesdays. Pre-order via 03 5200 9708

The Village Door
It wouldn’t be a complete list without this iconic breaky spot, and thankfully they’re still serving pancakes takeaway, although they aren’t your regular sized ones. These little Dutch pancakes (or poffertjes) are basically little balls of battery heaven, and we can never get enough! Whatever topping you choose – nutella, maple syrup, lemon sugar or strawberries, jam and cream, you’ll be a winner. Just don’t forget the ice cream.

They’ve also got French Toast with cinnamon sugar, berries and cream AND Sweet Pierogi with icing sugar served with strawberries and cream if you feel like branching out!

Call on 03 5221 1571 to order and pick up, or just head on down to 156 Pakington Street, Geelong West.

With a menu completely dedicated to pancakes, you’ll be sorted with at-home pancakes right up until those pesky restrictions are lifted. You’ll find maple ice cream pancakes, lemon and sugar, banana butterscotch, hundreds and thousands (complete with choccy sauce), salted caramel, blueberry buttermilk, classic choc chip, and strawberries and cream. The only problem you’ll have is deciding which one to get on any given day.

Better still, keep the PJs and Uggs on because the Sweet Cheeks crew are on UberEats, delivering delicious pancakes stacks to your door all week long.

You can check it out here.

Bear and Scoobs
What do you get when you cross one of the best desserts ever with pancakes? You get STICKY DATE PANCAKES – a stack of three sticky date pancakes, topped with ice cream and then smothered in sticky date sauce (yes, this means lots of butterscotch). You can go for their regular pancakes too, but why would you when this is on offer?!
