Freya Josephine Hollick, Australia’s Queen of Cosmic Country and recent Rhythms Magazine cover star is due for a long reign, that is if her new album The Real World is anything to go by. Goanna ‘Celebrating 40 Years Of Spirit Of Place’ with Luke Biscan and Luke Ryan.

In the early ‘80s, in the midst of Aussie Rock’s golden age, Goanna helped forge a new Australian identity. Before Midnight Oil and Paul Kelly addressed similar issues, the iconic ‘Solid Rock’ stoked a fire for Indigenous rights that hasn’t gone out, while the anthem of ‘Let The Franklin Flow’ was a call to arms for the emerging environmental movement.

Soulful, lyrical, brimming with musicality and creative volatility, Goanna mixed classic folk song craft with spirited roots rock, helping to establish a musical thread that remains vital and ubiquitous in Australian music today.

In 2022, Shane Howard, Rose Bygrave, Marcia Howard and Graham Davidge, with special guests, embark on a new journey. Reigniting the Goanna spirit once more and paying homage to their classic songs.

With Special Guests Luke Biscan and Mick Ryan.

There’s a 21-hectare elephant trail being built at Werribee Open Range Zoo

It’s one of the lead attractions of a major $88 million expansion of Werribee Open Range Zoo, which will see a herd of Asian elephants currently living at Melbourne Zoo – that include three pregnant females with calves expected to be born in the coming months – move to a five-kilometre long fenced-off trail in Werribee.

One of the elephants that will move to Werribee is Mali, the first-ever elephant to be born at Melbourne Zoo. “The purpose-built Elephant Trail at Werribee Open Range Zoo will be the gold standard in animal welfare, with the herd able to roam across 21 hectares,” Zoos Victoria CEO Dr Jenny Gray said.

Asian Elephants relocated from Melbourne Zoo

  • A 21-hectare Elephant Trail is being built at Werribee Open Range Zoo
  • Once complete, Melbourne Zoo’s Asian elephant herd will be relocated
  • The five-kilometre trail is due for completion in 2024

Keep up with the latest in local news and entertainment here.

The state government has just released a prototype for perimeter fencing of the new Asian elephant habitat as part of the upgrade.

The five-kilometre perimeter fence will keep the new Asian elephant herd safe and secured and must be engineered to withstand the weight and force of a herd of adult Asian elephants.

The fence is being built from repurposed construction materials that have been donated by government agencies including VicTrack, Victoria’s Big Build, Bushfire Recovery Victoria and commercial companies from across Melbourne.

The repurposed rail track from Level Crossing Removal Project and elevator cable will be used to construct the perimeter fencing for the Elephant Trail and the Asian wild horse, American bison and Southern white rhinoceros facilities.

The repurposed timber will be used to construct animal enrichment structures, boardwalks and gates, and visitor amenities. The habitat is expected to be complete for Zoos Victoria’s Asian elephant herd to move in 2024.

Head to the Zoos Victoria website for the latest information.

Marcel Borrack, Ben Mason

Marcel Borrack has had a diverse career in music. Fascinated and inspired by broad influences he has always challenged himself to keep developing new skills in technology and production as well as writing and performing in different contexts. He’s released 2 solo albums as a singer songwriter as well as 2 albums with his band minibikes. As a studio and live guitarist he’s played with performers such as Tina Arena, Missy Higgins, Ella Hooper, Dan Warner, Sarah Carroll and Don Walker. As a producer and engineer he’s worked on albums by Ella Hooper, Ruby Gill, Gena Rose Bruce, Jade Imagine, Sarah Carroll and Dan Warner. Marcel has also composed for film and television and worked in many different audio production roles.

The forthcoming album “telecaster diaries” was written and recorded during the 2020 lockdown.

Marcel explains…

With a few recording projects unable to proceed I started to work on my own ideas for an instrumental album. The name Telecaster Diaries came from the concept of writing a musical idea every day, an actual musical diary. I would focus on a thought from the day and try to express it in a musical form. I limited myself to creating these ideas with “Pendlebury” which is the name of my telecaster guitar. I would just sit and play and when I was happy with where it was heading I would immediately start recording, adding bass, organ and percussion to flesh it out. This process was pretty spontaneous and I was usually able to get it all done over the course of an evening. At that point I was super lucky to have my great friend and collaborator Tim Harvey and his partner, drummer Maria Moles on standby to record the drum parts at their home studio in Collingwood. Every time I finished an idea I would send it off to them and a day or so later it would come back with the most incredible drum performances. Maria and Tim knew exactly what to do and they made the whole thing magic. Fast forward to now and I’ve formed a band to play the songs live. The “TD” band is Andy Pap on bass, Al Barden on drums and Peter (sweet) Carolane on the organ and percussion.

Greenhouse ‘god-like’ Single Launch, The Maggie Pills.

Sound As Ever 90-99 presents…
greenhouse

Join greenhouse on Saturday 22nd October for the release of their new single entitled ‘god-like’ ahead of an album that’s set for release in early 2023.

“…the indie darlings are back, picking up right where they left off” Talia Rinaldo – Forte Magazine

“Journey into the stratosphere of searing, soaring, scorching guitars, and you’ll discover greenhouse” Jeff Apter – On the Street. Sydney.

When their debut single See Saw, launched out of Geelong, greenhouse became an instant Triple J favourite, landing them in the top ten of the National Alternative Charts, the single listed in the music media as one of the important songs of 1990, alongside Vapour Trail by Ride and The Only One I Know by The Charlatans.

Two more top 10 indie hits followed over the next two years, charting alongside some of their heroes like The Pixies and The Cocteau Twins. It was apparent, as John Watson (eleven music) wrote in Sydney’s On the Street, that Greenhouse were …obviously suited to puddles larger…

Scott Thurling and Jane Gazzo’s Sound As Ever label, unearthed, remastered and released a lost greenhouse track, Pray, on the 2021 compilation album ‘Stuck on the ‘90s’. This release, the airplay and accompanying video got people excited.

Sell out shows in Melbourne and Geelong between lockdowns followed and greenhouse unleashed a 14 track retrospective on the Sound As Ever 90-99 label. This album, Full Circles, includes their early recordings, previously unreleased material from their early recordings, previously unreleased material from their JJJ live at the wireless appearance and unreleased demos from their EMI sessions.

With special guests The Maggie Pills plus more TBA.

Rekindled Systems

Rekindled Systems is the song Yorta Yorta artist Allara sang that called in the spirit of Ukrainian Canadian artist Olenka Toroshenko. The following day it was Olenka’s recitation of ‘Walk into the Fire’ that unlocked the passageway to what has become a deep kinship and creative collaboration. While cutting beets for borscht on Sviat Vechir (Ukrainian Christmas) in Jan 2020, the pair realised they are BOTH descendants of people who survived genocides intended to annihilate a peoples and their cultural identity. With resilience and direct intent, Allara and Olenka call upon the guidance of their Elders and Ancestors to navigate the troubling state of our current cultural paradigm and planet. Rekindled Systems is a living document, an ode to Mother Earth’s beings that activates the power of language, story, song and ceremony to heal spirit and culture.

Featuring performances from special guests Corey Theatre and Monica Jasmine Karo .

Rekindled Systems is supported by Creative Victoria and Australia Council.

Illy announces special shows in Torquay and Ballarat in November

Fresh from releasing his newest single ‘Like You’, Melbourne-born, Australian rapper Illy (the moniker of Al Murray) has announced two special Victorian shows in November. He’ll be heading to The Torquay Hotel on Friday, November 18 and Volta in Ballarat on Saturday, November 19 with support from Babyface Mal. He’ll also be performing as part of Alpine Valley Vibes Festival in Bright on November 12.

Marking the beginning of a brand new chapter for Illy, ‘Like You’ is the first new music from Illy this year and the follow-up to his 2021 album and sixth release The Space Between.

Keep up with the latest music news, festivals, interviews and reviews here.

Equipped with all the energy and punch you’d expect from an Illy release, ‘Like You’ is the first new piece of music from Illy to break open his forthcoming seventh studio album and sees the talented artist leaning into the unknown and embracing new sonic inspirations. The single, buoyed by vocal harmonies layered over a slick pairing of EDM and a driving acoustic guitar, never loses its sense of self-awareness or fun. It’s this versatility as a songwriter and performer that has seen the artist grow from Australian hip hop champion, through to one of the country’s most in-demand and dynamic pop artists today.

Much like all his projects to date, ‘Like You’ is bursting with collaborators including co-writer Johnny Took of DMA’S, Peking Duk’s Reuben Styles and Adam Hyde, and electronic producer Black Summer. Regular Peking Duk collaborator Staylz Fuego produced the song.

“I wanted to kick off the new era with a bang and ‘Like You’ was the perfect fit for that,” Illy said in a statement. “Working with some of my favourite Australian artists and producers made the process a lot of fun and something to be excited about. This really shines through in the track. I’ve listened to this song 1000 times and still, I love this song.”

The single also signifies a new era for Illy, having parted ways with Sony Music Australia and returned to his former home, Warner Music – the label that released Illy’s 2013 album Cinematic and 2016’s Two Degrees.

Genre: Gypsy Jazz (and a whole lot more!)

About: Djangology pay tribute to the music of French guitarist Django Reinhardt and along the way offer up Gypsy Jazz versions of many other popular songs.

Swing, style and a few surprises await! Terry Murray – Guitar, Simon Wigney – Guitar, Bruce Millar – Acoustic bass, Gillian Eastoe – Vocals and percussion.

Fans of Romani-French jazz guitarist Django Reinhardt missed an incredible gig on Saturday featuring the stunning local Django Lingo trio – Terry Murray, Howard Malkin and Nic Lyon.

Led by guitar virtuoso Terry Murray, the band swung through Django favourites such as After You’ve Gone, Djangology and Minor Swing in an original spell-binding performance which they themselves enjoyed immensely.

The audience witnessed the most professional fast-paced jam they have ever seen in the Guildford pub. Django Lingo offered innovative improvisation, technical expertise and teamwork with plenty of color and dynamic power. Murray roamed freely over the fretboard using harmonics, pizzicato and lyrical melodic inventions while guitarist Malkin and Lyon on electric bass, backed up on rhythm and harmonies. Malkin and Lyon then took impressive solos without missing a beat while Murray supported them. Other songs included Nature Boy, Honeysuckle Rose, Cry me a River, Meditation, Brazil and Isn’t she lovely.

Murray said Django Lingo had been jamming together for just a few months between lockdowns but the weekly rehearsal was such infectious fun.

“When we first got together Howard said ‘You play all the tricky bits’ but I said ‘You also do them very well’. When we started we had our own way of playing, but we have amazed ourselves harmonising’.

Each musician brings immense experience playing in a range of genres. Murray has played internationally with the London Symphony Orchestra, Buddy Greco and Randy Crawford and rock, jazz and country music bands and Malkin and Lyon are well known on the western swing and jazz circuits, with Lyon also playing violin.

In 1934, with violinist Stephane Grappelli, Django Reinhardt formed the Paris based Quintette du Hot Club de France – one of the first bands in Europe to play hot jazz that featured guitar as lead instrument. Django Lingo has shown locals just how good that can be.
