Flinders Quartet: ‘Beethoven and the Vignettes’

Flinders Quartet’s mission is to carry on the strong tradition of the string quartet in 21st century Australia so future generations can have an idea of Australia’s culture through the music created at the time. The commissioning of five emerging composers to write vignettes in response to Beethoven’s Grosse Fugue creates contemporary relevance for this seminal work and ensures that the generations to come have an awareness of Beethoven’s string quartet canon.

Beethoven’s Grosse Fugue is seen by some as an unapproachable composition, but by pairing it with these five short works, we present a new way of listening to this vital work with fresh insights. Beethoven’s Opus 18 were his first works in the genre and his development of one small motif was revolutionary in compositional terms. This same idea is connected to the task ascribed to our five emerging composers, 200 years on.

“Beethoven: the standard of greatness against which all composers since have measured themselves. For any quartet player, coming back to Beethoven is always therapeutic, a spiritually nourishing and technically strengthening homecoming and I can’t wait to get immersed in this program. It encompasses a wide range of Beethoven’s output from one of his virtuosic Op. 18 set of six early quartets to the iconic and fearsome Grosse Fugue from his Late Period. Originally written as the last movement of his Op. 130 quartet, it took on a life of its own when Beethoven wrote an alternate last movement for 130 and more importantly, because of its scale, drama, complexity and unrelenting, uncompromising intensity – and it’s just as intense for the audience as it is for the performers. What’s really special about this program, though, is the opportunity we’ve given to five young composers to explore the Grosse Fugue and respond to it in their own way with tiny miniatures, the exact opposite of the colossus before them. I’m intrigued to see what they come up with!” WILMA SMITH, VIOLIN

Durations: 60 minutes, no interval.

Rekindled Systems

Rekindled Systems is the song Yorta Yorta artist Allara sang that called in the spirit of Ukrainian Canadian artist Olenka Toroshenko. The following day it was Olenka’s recitation of ‘Walk into the Fire’ that unlocked the passageway to what has become a deep kinship and creative collaboration. While cutting beets for borscht on Sviat Vechir (Ukrainian Christmas) in Jan 2020, the pair realised they are BOTH descendants of people who survived genocides intended to annihilate a peoples and their cultural identity. With resilience and direct intent, Allara and Olenka call upon the guidance of their Elders and Ancestors to navigate the troubling state of our current cultural paradigm and planet. Rekindled Systems is a living document, an ode to Mother Earth’s beings that activates the power of language, story, song and ceremony to heal spirit and culture.

Featuring performances from special guests Corey Theatre and Monica Jasmine Karo .

Rekindled Systems is supported by Creative Victoria and Australia Council.

Kings of the Blues

Presented By: Melbourne Creative Music Company & Lighthouse Theatre

BB, FREDDIE and ALBERT represent the pinnacle of blues guitar virtuosity. They used a minimum to create the maximum blues effect and together they set the standard to which all others aspire. And the KINGS were superb vocalists, ripping into the very soul of the blues.

Such is their influence that those who have come closest to emulating their extraordinary power are themselves regarded as Guitar Gods – people like ERIC CLAPTON, STEVIE RAY VAUGHAN, PETER GREEN and the great JIMI HENDRIX. We are proud to have 3 of Australia’s greatest players, GEOFF ACHISON, DAVE HOLE and SHANE PACEY paying homage to these giants. They will combine their guitar slinging fretboard talents in a series of exclusive shows performing the music of these Three Kings.

Lior & Domini: Animal In Hiding

Animal in Hiding is the first release from a collaboration between one of Australia’s most established and critically acclaimed singer/songwriters Lior, together with exciting emerging artist Domini Forster. The pair have a creative partnership developed over six years touring together. Initially Domini toured as Lior’s support act, then as a guest vocalist and now as co-writer on their debut EP Animal in Hiding.

While Lior and Domini began writing the songs in late 2019, much of the material was developed during Melbourne’s long lockdown, over zoom from their respective homes. The title track, originally written about the isolation of winter, became the prophetic seed of the project.

Animal in Hiding features songs that are rooted in intimate storytelling. Underpinned by intricate guitar, Lior and Domini’s close vocal harmonies are the focal point of the songs, harking back to the iconic folk duos of the 60s.

Australian Ashleigh Barty was a professional tennis player on the Women’s Tennis Association tour from 2011 to 2022 (with a break from late 2014 to early 2016). Widely regarded as one of the sport’s most naturally talented players, Barty’s game style and ability to play a wide variety of shots set her apart from her opponents.

Her off-court manner endeared her further to the tennis community and fans around the world. With her signature unassuming approach, confidence to forge her own path and commitment to being a good person before all else, she became a role model for many.

“It’s a tennis story. It’s a family story. It’s a teamwork story. It’s the story of how I got to where and who I am today,” Barty says of her memoir.

“I’m only in my mid-twenties, and some might think that’s young to write a memoir. Who does that, right? But for me and my team it’s always been important to reflect on every part of the journey, especially the end. In that context, the timing is perfect to share my story, from the first time I picked up a racquet as a 5-year-old girl in Ipswich to the night I packed up my tennis bag at Melbourne Park after winning the 2022 Australian Open. This book gives me a chance to look back at every moment of the 20 years in between, and to think carefully through the highs and lows, the work and the play, the smiles and the tears.

“Telling my story also gives me an opportunity to do more than simply thank those who mean the most to me – it provides a way to honour them as an integral part of that tale, as the very secret behind my success. Some of them you might know – such as my longtime coach, Craig Tyzzer – and some of them you might not – like my first childhood coach, Jim Joyce. There are mates like Casey Dellacqua and Alicia Molik. Mentors such as tennis icon Evonne Goolagong Cawley and mindset coach Ben Crowe. My parents and sisters and my husband have sacrificed as much as I have over the years – this book is also for them,” she continues.

A post shared by Ash Barty (@ashbarty)

My Dream Time is about finding the path to being the best I could be, not just as an athlete but as a person, and to consider the way those identities overlap and compete. We all have a professional and a personal self. How do you conquer nerves and anxiety? How do you deal with defeat, or pain? What drives you to succeed – and what happens when you do? The answers tell me so much, about bitter disappointments and also dreams realised – from injuries and obscurity and self-doubt to winning Wimbledon and ranking number 1 in the world.

“My story is about the power and joy of doing that thing you love and seeing where it can take you, about the importance of purpose – and perspective – in our lives.”

Alongside her memoir, Barty has also teamed up with Jasmin McGaughey and Jade Goodwin to bring young readers this fun and exciting new illustrated series about school, sport, friendship and family titled Little Ash!
