This powerful showcase serves as a testament to the Australian Open’s commitment to fostering a welcoming environment for the LGBTQI+ community. Pride Day emerged from a recognition that some individuals within the LGBTQI+ community have historically felt excluded in sporting environments.

Beyond the exhilarating Finals Festival performances, Pride Day promises to be a visual spectacle. Attendees can expect roaming drag queens and kings, glam stations for instant makeovers, rainbow roller skaters, and the iconic Rod Laver Arena aglow in a dazzling array of rainbow colours as evening falls.

Following last year’s sold-out success at Kia Arena, this year’s Finals Festival will make history at John Cain Arena with the biggest open-air music performance ever hosted in the arena’s existence.

With tickets in high demand, there are two options for eager fans. Match-goers can upgrade any tennis match ticket to gain access to the Finals Festival on that day. Alternatively, fans can purchase a dedicated Finals Festival day ticket, automatically including a ground pass for the full AO experience. Match ticket upgrades start at $40.00, and Finals Festival day passes (including a ground pass) start at $69.

Leading the music programming for the second year in a row is Untitled Group, Australia’s largest independent music and events promoter, renowned for events like Beyond The Valley, Wildlands, Grapevine Gathering, and Ability Fest.

ALICE COOPER

Kicking off the spectacle is none other than the legendary Alice Cooper, a name synonymous with rock theatrics and timeless anthems like “School’s Out,” “No Mr. Nice Guy,” and “Poison.” With over 50 million albums sold worldwide and a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction in 2011, Alice Cooper continues to reign supreme with his latest album, “Road,” released in 2023.

BLONDIE

Blondie, a trailblazing force in the music industry, brings their pioneering spirit to Pandemonium. Led by the iconic Debbie Harry, Blondie’s hits include the groundbreaking “Heart of Glass,” the hip-hop-infused “Rapture,” and the unforgettable “One Way Or Another.” With more than 40 million albums sold worldwide, Blondie remains a true global icon even after four decades in the spotlight.

PLACEBO

In the mid-’90s, Placebo emerged as a voice for those alienated by Britpop, offering a unique blend of glam goth, grungey sonics, and pop savvy. With hits like “Nancy Boy” and “Running Up That Hill,” Placebo’s influence extends globally, making them a force to be reckoned with. Their eighth release, “Never Let Me Go” (2022), continues to showcase their dark alt-rock goth goodness and electronic undertones.

DEEP PURPLE

With over 100 million albums sold and a legacy spanning five decades, Deep Purple is undeniably ‘rock royalty.’ The band’s 20th studio album, “inFinite” (2017), broke chart records, reaffirming their status as one of the most influential bands ever. From “Smoke On The Water” to “Highway Star,” Deep Purple’s classics will echo through Pandemonium’s stages.

WHEATUS

Wheatus’s debut single, “Teenage Dirtbag” (2000), refuses to fade away, recently re-entering the UK Top 40 charts in 2023. The band, known for their dirty rock ‘n’ roll, has embraced a new wave of fans through TikTok trends and remixes. With a career spanning six studio albums, Wheatus continues to captivate audiences worldwide.

THE PSYCHEDELIC FURS

The Psychedelic Furs, pioneers of alternative rock, have left an indelible mark with hits like “Love My Way” and “Pretty In Pink.” After a brief hiatus, the band returned in 2020 with “Made Of Rain,” showcasing their enduring vibrancy after four decades.

DEAD KENNEDYS

Celebrating 40 years of punk rock chaos, Dead Kennedys remain an over-the-top live act that guarantees an unforgettable experience. Their early hits, including “Holiday In Cambodia” and “Too Drunk To Fuck,” paved the way for American punk, influencing bands like the Offspring and Green Day.

GANG OF FOUR

Gang of Four’s radical influence on rock music over the last 40 years is undeniable. From Red Hot Chili Peppers to Franz Ferdinand, their impact resonates across genres. The band’s compilation album, “The Problem Of Leisure,” pays homage to their legacy with covers by artists like Idles and Tom Morello.

PALAYE ROYALE

Blending brit-pop, glam rock, and art-punk, Palaye Royale brings unparalleled swagger to Pandemonium. With a legion of cult-like fans and their fourth studio album, “Fever Dream” (2022), the trio continues to push boundaries in the rock scene.

WOLFMOTHER, COSMIC PSYCHOS, GYROSCOPE

Rounding off the stellar lineup are electrifying acts like Wolfmother, known for their primal psychedelia, Cosmic Psychos with their beer-fueled punk rock, and Perth’s Gyroscope, a constant presence on the Australian music scene since 1997.

But Pandemonium is more than just a music festival – it’s a force for good. Proudly partnering with essential charities, the festival supports our veterans and youth. With ANZAC Day falling on the Sydney event, Legacy and Wounded Heroes will be on site, while the Gold Coast event will feature the dedicated team from Top Blokes, tirelessly working to prevent youth suicide.

Songbird Thai BBQ opens in the former home of Igni, bringing northern Thai flair to Geelong

In the heart of Geelong’s CBD, where the acclaimed IGNI once stood, a new culinary phoenix has risen. Say hello to Songbird Thai BBQ, a vibrant and casual Thai street food diner that’s bringing the bold and spicy flavours of northern Thailand to the locals.

With a fresh approach to dining, Songbird promises a memorable sharing a la carte menu that celebrates the fiery dance of chilli, the sizzle of BBQ meats, and the comfort of sticky rice.

Keep up with the latest food and booze news across the region here.

The transformation of the renowned space from fine dining to the casual elegance of Songbird began with the closure of IGNI, a seven-year-old fine-dining institution. Aaron Turner and Joanna Smith, the visionaries behind IGNI, handed over the reins to Nathan Lancaster, who now leads the culinary charge at Songbird.

After seven years, Geelong fine-dining restaurant IGNI announces ‘indefinite break’

The seamless shift from fine dining to casual elegance is evident in the à la carte menu that encourages shared experiences over a diverse selection of dishes.

Lancaster, who was formerly a chef of IGNI and now the maestro behind Songbird’s kitchen, draws inspiration from his time in San Francisco, where he perfected his Thai culinary skills at chef James Syhabout’s Hawker Fare – a place known for dishing out delicious Issan Thai, family style dishes in a comfortable and casual atmosphere.

The result is a menu at Songbird that’s a gastronomic journey through the streets of Chiang Mai, laden with powerful flavours and textures cooked over red gum and charcoal (making good use of the renowned IGNI grill).

The a la carte menu is simple and refined, with very clear nods to northern Thai cuisine. It features snacks like Tua Kua (Roasted Peanuts with Dry Red Curry), Cab Moo (the delightful Crispy Pork Crackle), and Gai Nok Ping (half grilled quail), each a symphony of taste. There’s also grilled corn, soured pork ribs and shrimp chips, served with Naam Jim Satay.

The grill section, named “Yang,” takes centre stage, presenting delights like Beef Short Ribs and Grilled Pork Shoulder, infused with Thai whisky and honey, creating a perfect harmony of flavours. And let’s not forget the Curried Murray Cod Wrapped & Grilled in Banana Leaf, a culinary masterpiece. Delve further into the menu with the half chicken, Northern Thai pork sausage, and Skull Island prawns. The grilled items are all served with accompanying relish, dips, or sauces and best eaten with sticky rice – the king of this culinary kingdom.

Round out your meal with a selection of salads and sides, including the fire roasted mushrooms, green beans or fried chicken eggs, tomato and celery.

The menu caters to various dietary requirements, proudly boasting a gluten and dairy-free haven. For those with an aversion to seafood or shellfish, worry not – Songbird has crafted a menu with diverse options.

As for the beverages, Joanna Smith curates a drinks list that mirrors the restaurant’s vibrant personality. Singha beer and a New England pale ale from Two Rupees Brewing flow from the taps, while inventive cocktails and non-alcoholic cocktails showcase a commitment to innovation.

As patrons step into the reimagined space, the decor tells a tale of vibrancy, led by Smith and her family. Enticing patrons to embrace the lively atmosphere, the venues dark walls contrast with a sea of pinks, teals, and bold splashes of colours throughout. Floral artworks adorn the walls, infusing the space with a burst of natural vibrancy. Electric blue glasses add a pop of colour to the tables, catching the eye and setting the stage for a dining experience that is anything but ordinary. Timber furnishings provide a warm and inviting contrast, creating a harmonious blend of modern and rustic aesthetics.

The tables, dressed in bold floral tablecloths, invite patrons to an intimate rendezvous with Northern Thai cuisine. Floral arrangements, reminiscent of Chiang Mai’s lively markets, sit proudly, adding a touch of freshness to the dining space. The quirky red-laced waiter’s station stands as a testament to Songbird’s commitment to playfulness in both presentation and personality, while a modern framed mirrors reflect the eclectic atmosphere, bouncing light and hues across the room.

At Songbird, the emphasis is not just on the taste but on the joy of dining. The philosophy of “eating happy” permeates every aspect of the experience. While forks are available, the true essence of the cuisine unfolds when diners embrace the Northern Thai tradition of eating with their hands, connecting with the food on a deeper level.

As Songbird spreads its wings in Geelong, it promises not just a meal but an experience, a celebration of Thai street food culture with a contemporary twist. So, gather your flock, make a reservation, and prepare to be serenaded by Songbird Thai BBQ.

Songbird Thai BBQ 2 Ryan Place South, Rear of 205, 207 Moorabool St, Geelong. It’s open Wednesday to Saturday, 5 pm – 10 pm.

Alice In Wonderland brings whimsical adventure to Melbourne’s Capitol Theatre

Families entered Melbourne’s Capitol Theatre with mouths agape, greeted by giant inflatable flamingos lining the aisles leading down to a vibrant stage backdrop of clocks and doors – the perfect magical setting for Lewis Carroll’s beloved Alice In Wonderland.

The play kicked off with a burst of energy from Rachel Tunaley’s panicked White Rabbit, who darted through the crowd, screaming “I’m late! I’m late!” and breaking into the first of many musical numbers. Tunaley navigated the stage with finesse, engaging kids early on, further heightening their excitement levels.

Next, we met Cassidy Dunn’s titular Alice, steering the narrative and making sense of the more imaginative creatures for unfamiliar audience members, such as Bill The Lizard, Frog & Fish Footman, and the pepper-loving Duchess.

Despite the relatively small ensemble cast, they excelled in juggling multiple character performances, with most taking on three or four different roles. Standouts included the Mad Hatter, played by production director Dennis Manahan, and Madeleine Mason’s Queen Of Hearts, who made a grand entrance on stilts alongside Benjamin Barker as the King.

The musical score differed significantly from the 1951 Disney animation feature, featuring some original songs that were catchier than others; the Tweedledee & Tweedledum number proved particularly challenging to follow.

However, the production incorporated numerous interactive elements for kids to join in, from shouting out suggestions to standing up to dance. The highlight was during the Queen Of Hearts’ croquet game, when pink beach balls and inflatable flamingos cascaded down on everyone, and audience members joyfully batted them about.

Alice In Wonderland runs at Melbourne’s Capitol Theatre until 21st January 2024, with performances Tuesday through Sunday and two timeslots on Friday and Saturday. Tickets are available on their website: Shakespeare Australia.

This is part of the Australian Shakespeare Company’s summer production series, which also includes The Wind In The Willows and Tinkerbell & The Dream Fairies. These shows provide a perfect daytime activity for kids on school holidays, offering plenty of interaction and music to stimulate their little brains.

The brainchild of Brouhaha Entertainment, Chapter One Pictures, and Anonymous Content, this Aussie TV gem is making waves since its release last Thursday. With an impressive 3.6 million views and counting, the limited series has soared to #5 in the global Top 10 TV Shows and firmly holds its ground at #2 in Australia’s Top 10.

Dubbed a “one-of-a-kind Australian period piece” by Luke Buckmaster of Guardian Australia, Boy Swallows Universe has not just conquered Brisbane but has also etched its mark on the Weekly Top 10 in 47 countries. The UK bows at #8, and the USA clinches the #10 spot.

Fans are singing its praises, hailing it as “beautiful, brilliant, and uplifting” and deeming it a “10/10 Netflix show.” The buzz around the show is contagious, and the online community is going gaga, declaring it “compulsory viewing.”

Bringing Trent Dalton’s beloved story to life, the coming-of-age story follows a boy, Eli Bell, caught up in his family’s criminal dealings in 1980s Australia.

Although the original book might remain untouched, the Netflix adaptation sweeps viewers into a sun-drenched odyssey through 80s Brisbane. The reviewer praises the cast’s chameleon-like performances, applauding the scrappy innocence of Felix Cameron as young Eli and the simmering intensity of Zac Burgess as the older Eli. The series is commended for its unpredictable narrative, combining gritty reality with whimsical rabbit holes and an unforgettable soundtrack.

In their final verdict, the reviewer gives the series a resounding five stars, declaring it a masterpiece that lingers long after the credits roll.

The raw, real, and funny portrayal, coupled with phenomenal performances, has left an indelible mark. The viewer is left wondering about the possibility of a second season and, intriguingly, the fate of Slim’s dog and the cool Toyota.

Boy Swallows Universe joins the elite ranks of Australian stories dominating Netflix’s Top 10, rubbing shoulders with hits like “Love Is In The Air,” “Surviving Summer Season 2,” “Fisk,” “Run Rabbit Run,” “Wellmania,” “True Spirit,” “The Stranger,” and “Heartbreak High.”

Jing Wei Wong, drawing inspiration from his Malaysian heritage and global escapades, infuses a modern twist into traditional dishes without sacrificing the beloved flavours and textures. Under the adept guidance of Anthony Hammel, a culinary virtuoso with a storied career at renowned establishments like Lake House, Press Club, and Ran Pei Modern, the culinary innovation reaches new heights.

Hammel’s expertise extends globally, with a stint as Executive Chef at Hue in Hong Kong, China, and collaborations with culinary maestro Matt Germanchis at Lorne hotel, now channelled into shaping the culinary philosophy of both Mary’s and its sibling, The Arborist.

So, what kind of food can you expect to see? Snacks and starters include mouth-watering delights like natural Oysters, Potato Croquette, Anchovy Toast with Peanut and Sambal, and Tofu & Mushroom Dumplings with Black Vinegar. There’s also chicken satay skewers, prawn wontons, and of course the crowd favourite, haloumi with goji berry, Saffron, sesame and almond.

Large plates further showcase the artistry of the kitchen with offerings like Spiced Cauliflower, Barramundi Bakar with Peanut and Anchovy Crumb, and the monumental Bird Rock Rib-Eye ‘Char Siew’, served with cucumber. Designed to be shared amongst loved ones, we also recommend the Mongolian lamb shoulder, or the half chicken with Chinese master stock.

Accompanying the feast are delectable sides such as Fried Spuds with Furikake and Aioli, wholesome broccolini with toasted garlic, and a vibrant Cos Salad with Sesame Dressing.

Julie Byrne, the virtuoso behind the mesmerising album The Greater Wings, is bringing her powerful, life-affirming music to the stage. The album is a poignant testament to the transcendence of love and friendship over grief and loss, marking a significant chapter in Byrne’s musical journey.

Following the success of her 2017 breakthrough album, Not Even Happiness, The Greater Wings has emerged as one of the most rapturously reviewed albums of the year. Recorded in the Catskills of New York with producer Alex Somers (Sigur Rós, Julianna Barwick), the album reflects on the deep and enduring impact of friendship. Despite the tragic loss of her longtime creative partner, Eric Littmann, during its production, the album stands as a celebration of their bond.

“My hope for The Greater Wings is that it lives as a love letter to my chosen family and as an expression of the depth of my commitment to our shared future. Being reshaped by grief also has me more aware of what death does not take from me. I commit that to heart, to words, to sound,” says Julie Byrne.

“Music is not bound to any kind of linear time, so in the capacity to record and speak to the future: this is what it felt like to me, when we were simultaneous, alive, occurring all at once. What it has felt like to go up against my edge and push, the love that has made it worth all this fight. These memories are my values, they belong with me.”

Known for her hushed vocals, sparse instrumentation, and gently plucked guitar, Julie Byrne is a captivating presence on stage. Accompanied by her musical companions, she effortlessly transforms any venue into an intimate space, inviting the audience into her world. With an aura of warmth and vulnerability, Byrne’s performances are a shared experience, resonating with the audience’s emotions.

For nearly a decade, Julie Byrne has navigated the world as a characteristically private artist, shaping her poetic, evocative songcraft through her experiences. Raised in New York State and currently residing in New York City, Byrne’s music draws inspiration from the folk lineage of the wanderer. She taught herself to play the guitar during a challenging period when her father could no longer play due to illness. Her journey includes various roles, from supermarket shelves to a seasonal urban park ranger in Manhattan.

In addition to her solo career, Julie Byrne has collaborated on projects like the EP Velocity! What About The Inertia! with Laugh Cry Laugh, recorded during the winter of the previous year. The EP includes an original track and a cover of Jackson Browne’s “These Days.”
