The Slingers

Through the last 5 years of eclectic releases and impassioned live performances, The Slingers have cemented themselves as one of the most unique bands of the contemporary Australian underground/alternative scene. Their releases range in style from rock and roll to electronic, and from Australiana folk to the country pastiche of Kind Hearts, a collaboration with Melbourne underground legend, Spike Fuck. In 2021, the band were included in Beat Magazine’s ‘20 Underground Melbourne Bands You Ought to Know’.

Since signing to iconic Australian label, Flightless Records, in 2020, the band has made a foray into the universe of ‘Motel Pop’. The genre is less defined by production than by its lyrical content, chronicling with a blend of comedy and tragedy the lives of ordinary people struggling through our current age of loneliness.

The evolution of ‘Motel Pop’ culminated in their debut LP, Sentimentalism, released in July 2023. The album peaked at #4 on the ARIA’s charts for Top Aus Albums and #5 for Top Vinyl Albums. Off the back of this success, The Slingers completed a sold-out tour of Australia’s East Coast – including multiple shows at BigSound in Brisbane and a sold-out show at Melbourne’s iconic Corner Hotel.

On the cards for 2024 is the release of a single and their sophomore album, as well as further touring around Australia and the UK/EU. The band were recently added to the line-up for Golden Plains Festival 2024.

Geelong’s charming rooftop hangout, The Cork Bar, sets the bar high

Nestled in the vibrant heart of Pakington Street, Geelong, there’s a new(ish) local gem that’s causing quite a stir – The Cork Bar.

Taking residence in the two-story building that once housed Taste Jamaica, this cosy neighbourhood bar and rooftop hangout officially opened its doors back in September last year, and ever since it’s become the go-to spot for those looking to sip crispy wine, innovative cocktails, and indulge in delectable snacks.

Thursday through Sunday, The Cork Bar provides a welcoming haven where patrons can revel in the illusion of having life completely together while cradling a Pinot on Lil Pako’s courtyard. The rooftop bar is the pièce de résistance, boasting a stunning aesthetic with a green and tan colour palette, with a picture-perfect collection of tan leather high-back barstools, plush green chairs, timber tables, and rattan outdoor seating adorned with sumptuous velvet green cushions.

As you ascend to the rooftop, you’re greeted by a dedicated bar area surrounded by tan couches, festoon lighting casting a warm glow during twilight hours, and a mix of high and low tables. Half the deck is shaded, creating a perfect spot for those who enjoy a cool breeze, while the other half basks in the glorious sunshine – an ideal setup for soaking up the afternoon rays.

In case the weather decides to play spoilsport, fear not, as The Cork Bar has you covered with a cosy downstairs bar that mirrors the same vibe and colour scheme as its popular rooftop sibling, complete with a distinctive green sign that beckons passersby.

This hidden gem in Geelong doesn’t just offer a feast for the eyes with its stunning tan and green aesthetic (though that’s so very welcomed); it tantalises your taste buds too with an impressive menu that perfectly complements the cool and vibey atmosphere. Start your afternoon visit with the delectable cheese boards and other nibbles – the perfect accompaniment to your chosen Pinot.

Here, the cocktail list shines, each one a masterpiece in its own right. The French Martini, with its perfect blend of sweetness and sophistication, or the Whiskey Sour, a classic that never fails to please. The Passionfruit Caprioska, a tropical delight, is a popular choice, capturing the essence of summer in a glass.

As you peruse The Cork Bar’s extensive drinks menu, you’ll notice it extends far beyond cocktails, with an impressive selection of wines, beers, and spirits. From the crisp notes of Ish Prosecco from King Valley, to the robust Moorilla Muse Extra Brut from the Derwent River, the wine list is a journey through Australian and international vineyards.

For those who prefer the rich embrace of reds, options like Moorilla Praxis Pinot Noir from the Derwent River and the bold Capa Single Vineyard Tempranillo from Cuenca, Spain, offer a satisfying spectrum of flavours. Beer enthusiasts can explore a curated selection, from local favourites like Balter Captain Sensible to the crisp notes of White Rabbit Dark Ale.

But that’s not all – Fish & Chips Fridays have just become a local sensation, drawing enthusiasts with promises of crispy goodness. Last year, The Beasts marked the 40th Anniversary of the reformation of The Beasts of Bourbon with two sold-out shows. The reunion was a special celebration, but it came with a touch of caution as their original drummer, the iconic James Baker, was undergoing treatment for cancer. However, against all odds, Baker not only powered through the gigs but delivered a performance that can only be described as nailing it “like a sledgehammer nails a thumbtack.”

The triumphant return left the audience in awe, and even Baker’s doctors were on board, recommending more gigs for the drummer’s well-being. In the spirit of rock ‘n’ roll healing, The Beasts have decided to hit the road again, following doctors’ orders and ready to spread their musical magic across the nation.

Tex Perkins, the charismatic frontman, shared a poetic message from James Baker and his wife Cath, expressing the band’s excitement to replicate the success of their previous shows. The message highlighted the band’s killer performances in Sydney and Melbourne and teased an upcoming tour that’s bound to knock fans dead “across this whole wide land.”

In true rock ‘n’ roll fashion, the band members – Tex Perkins, Boris Sujdovic, Charlie Owen, Kim Salmon, and the resilient James Baker – are all dressed up and ready to deliver an electrifying show that’s not to be missed. The Beasts are making a bold statement: “It’s not called Alive for nothing.”

James Baker, facing a terminal cancer diagnosis, has found solace and strength in the healing power of rock ‘n’ roll, as confirmed by his medical team, “It’s really fucking good for him!”

“Let’s all get together while we still can! The Beasts are back, …. again.”

Fans eager to witness The Beasts in action can secure their tickets, which go on sale Tuesday, January 23, via www.texperkins.com

Keep up with the latest music news, festivals, interviews and reviews here.

To be in the running, all you have to do is enter below by filling out your name and email.

By entering, you agree to receive marketing collateral from Forte and competition partners. For more info, check out our privacy policy.

First we looked at Dinosaur Jr. and RVG, so now let’s take a look at another two huge bands to get excited about:

Mogwai

For over 25 years, Mogwai has reigned as sonic architects, crafting monumental soundscapes that defy convention and redefine the boundaries of post-rock. Hailing from Scotland, this innovative and hugely influential band has amassed critical acclaim with a discography spanning several critically acclaimed albums.

Known for their colossal sound, Mogwai’s live shows are a testament to their musical prowess, taking the audience on epic journeys through the furthest frontiers of noise.

Their latest album, “As The Love Continues,” not only secured Mogwai their first UK number one in 2021 but also showcased their ever-expanding vision. Much like iconic artists such as Nick Cave and PJ Harvey, Mogwai refuses to be confined to a specific genre, consistently pushing the boundaries of their sonic landscape.

A post shared by Mogwai (@mogwaiband)

With ten records under their belt, Mogwai has never faltered, delivering a consistent stream of music that transcends expectations. In a world where predictability is the norm, Mogwai remains a constant source of solace from the mundane, providing a transcendent soundtrack for the stories unfolding in the minds of their listeners.

Beyond their albums, Mogwai has left an indelible mark on the world of film and television, creating acclaimed soundtracks, including the recent contribution to the Apple TV+ show “Black Bird.” Founder Stuart Braithwaite’s autobiography, “Spaceships Over Glasgow: Mogwai and Misspent Youth,” further enriches the band’s narrative, offering insights into their enduring journey.

As the title of one of their albums boldly states, “Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will” – a sentiment that resonates with the Mogwai way. Everything stays and everything passes, but Mogwai remains a force that defies time and convention. The recent chart-topping success of “As The Love Continues” is a testament to their enduring impact and the realisation that Mogwai is not just on the axis; they are the axis, forever shaping the trajectory of the rock sphere.

CIVIC

Having smashed a triumphant UK tour at The Great Escape Festival and making waves during their US debut at SXSW 2023, CIVIC has left an indelible mark on the global punk scene. Proclaimed by the Austin Chronicle as wielders of a “tough sound” that confirms Aussie punk supremacy, CIVIC’s live performances have been described by The Current in Minneapolis as an unstoppable force, with Magnet in Philadelphia declaring them the standout act at SXSW.

Led by the charismatic frontman Jim McCullough, CIVIC’s energetic and intense sets have become synonymous with a visceral and unforgettable live experience. Their prowess on stage has garnered praise across continents, establishing them as one of the most exhilarating bands to emerge in recent years.

With their sophomore full-length album, “Taken By Force,” CIVIC continues to redefine the reckless intensity of proto-punk, offering an immersive and emotionally charged body of work. Following the success of their critically acclaimed 2021 debut LP, “Future Forecast,” the Melbourne-based band seamlessly blends frenetic sound with self-aware outpouring and incisive observations of the world.

Taken By Force: CIVIC prove themselves Australia’s most genuine punk outfit with new album

CIVIC’s new album joyfully obliterates the line between furious catharsis and unbridled fun, injecting a vital energy into today’s musical landscape. As they gear up for their first-ever stateside tour this fall, including headline dates in major markets and coveted slots at Gonerfest (Memphis, TN – SOLD OUT) and Levitation (Austin, TX), CIVIC is set to unleash their raw, unapologetic punk spirit upon the US.

Prepare to witness the chaos as CIVIC transcends boundaries, leaving an indelible mark on the global punk scene.

This powerful showcase serves as a testament to the Australian Open’s commitment to fostering a welcoming environment for the LGBTQI+ community. Pride Day emerged from a recognition that some individuals within the LGBTQI+ community have historically felt excluded in sporting environments.

Beyond the exhilarating Finals Festival performances, Pride Day promises to be a visual spectacle. Attendees can expect roaming drag queens and kings, glam stations for instant makeovers, rainbow roller skaters, and the iconic Rod Laver Arena aglow in a dazzling array of rainbow colours as evening falls.

Following last year’s sold-out success at Kia Arena, this year’s Finals Festival will make history at John Cain Arena with the biggest open-air music performance ever hosted in the arena’s existence.

With tickets in high demand, there are two options for eager fans. Match-goers can upgrade any tennis match ticket to gain access to the Finals Festival on that day. Alternatively, fans can purchase a dedicated Finals Festival day ticket, automatically including a ground pass for the full AO experience. Match ticket upgrades start at $40.00, and Finals Festival day passes (including a ground pass) start at $69.

Leading the music programming for the second year in a row is Untitled Group, Australia’s largest independent music and events promoter, renowned for events like Beyond The Valley, Wildlands, Grapevine Gathering, and Ability Fest.

Tickets for this spectacular celebration of diversity are on sale now.
