In Australian-first, Melbourne scores exclusive direct flights to Istanbul with Turkish Airlines

In a major win for Melbourne, Turkish Airlines, one of the world’s largest carriers, has chosen the vibrant city to launch its first-ever flights to Australia. The announcement brings not only convenience for travellers but also promises to significantly boost tourism, trade, and job opportunities for the Victorian region.

The move, backed by the Allan Labor Government and Melbourne Airport, marks a historic moment as the first time an airline offers direct flights between Türkiye and Australia.

Keep up with the latest Victorian travel destinations, news and tips here

Commencing with three weekly services from March 2024, the direct flights hold the potential to grow into a daily service in the future. A daily service would add a staggering 109,500 seats to Melbourne each year, injecting over $132 million annually into the state’s economy and creating more than 840 jobs in aviation and tourism.

The strategic importance of these flights extends beyond passenger travel. With Türkiye, Middle East, and Africa being major trading partners for Victoria, the direct flights will provide a substantial boost to trade, contributing to the $5.48 billion two-way merchandise trade in 2022-23. The flights will also add 3,650 tonnes of air freight capacity annually, further enhancing Victoria’s global connectivity.

Melbourne’s diverse Türkiye-born community is set to benefit from these flights, fostering stronger ties between the two regions. Additionally, the direct route to Istanbul will open up key European, Middle Eastern, Balkan, and African markets via the airline’s hub, driving growth in tourism, international education, business, and trade.

The prospect of exploring Türkiye’s rich cultural heritage, stunning landscapes, and delectable cuisine is already sparking excitement among travel enthusiasts.

Starting with three weekly flights from March 15, 2024, and the possibility of daily flights in the future, this development not only makes travel more accessible for Melburnians but also adds Istanbul to the ever-growing list of international destinations served by Melbourne Airport.

The Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race is thrilled to feature mid-week races for both Men’s and Women’s teams, held across separate days for the first time.

Take in the unique buzz of a UCI WorldTour cycling event with an abundance of opportunity to have front row viewing – for free – get ready to be impressed!

For families – be part of this festival of cycling by participating in the GeelongPort Family Ride along the picturesque Geelong Waterfront. It’s something the whole family will enjoy and it’s free.

For those who love their bikes, there’s the TAC People’s Ride, with 35km, 50km and 125km options, catering for cyclists of all levels. This is a chance to ride on the same roads as the pros, and highlighted by Challambra – a climb for those doing the longest distance to choose to conquer (or bypass).

Looking to its significance to the region, the event immediately became part of Australian cycling history as it marked Cadel Evans’ final professional race. Spectators took to the streets of Geelong in 2015 for the last chance to see Australia’s most decorated cyclist compete. Despite a courageous race Cadel finished fifth, which was testament to the inaugural event’s ability to attract the top-ranking teams and riders.

In 2016, Cadel returned but this time he joined thousands of cycling enthusiasts in the Swisse People’s Ride. Since then, over 3000 participants of all ages and abilities take part each year – and this year is looking to be its biggest yet.

Where to watch 2024 Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race

There are official cheer-sites around the course where spectators can take advantage of the best viewing points during the race.

START/FINISH PRECINCT: VELO VILLAGE STEAMPACKET GARDENS

The Velo Village is the place to go to enjoy the build-up to the race as teams are introduced to the crowd, the riders are introduced to the crowd, the riders sign-on and they finalise their preparations before taking on the gruelling course. Fans can get up close to watch their favourite stars prepare.

Enjoy the action on the big screen, participate in sponsor activities, enjoy the live entertainment, grab some food and beverage, grab your official event merchandise and then grab a spot on the barriers so that you can catch a glimpse of what promises to be an exciting finale to the elite women’s and men’s road races.

How to get there:
Public transport is the best way to arrive at the Start/Finish Precinct. Take the train to Geelong Station and a 10-minute walk to the Start/Finish Precinct. If driving, once in Geelong avoid Western Beach and Eastern Beach Road, as well as between Moorabool and Bellarine Streets as there will be road closures. Instead, use Princes Highway, Latrobe Terrace, Mercer Street, Malop Street or Ryrie Street.

Top tip: The biggest crowds will gather here and so parking will be at a premium and affected by road closures for the event. Arrive early and be prepared for a short walk from your car and your parking spot, or from the train station.

BARWON HEADS – CHEER SITE, BARWON HEADS BRIDGE

Big crowds will gather in picturesque Barwon Heads, the hometown of Cadel Evans, where the peloton will navigate Thirteenth Beach Road before flying across the Barwon Heads Bridge for Intermediate Sprint points on offer.

Grab a bite at a local eatery, visit the shops or hit the local recreational riding trails while in the town. A good unofficial rest stop for the TAC People’s Ride peloton.

How to get there:
For spectators, the best access is via Barwon Heads road. For parking, try Flinders Parade, Bridge Road near the IGA. Avoid parking on Barwon Heads-Ocean Grove Road, Bridge Road and Ewing Blyth Drive as it’s part of the course.

Top tip: Don’t be late if you want to see the riders pass by. Get there early, you have some of the best eateries and cafes to keep you entertained ahead of the race passing through.

MONTPELLIER PARK AND CHALLAMBRA – KOM & QOM

See the agony on the faces of the world’s best cyclists as they trade blows up the steep Challambra climb, made famous by the 2010 UCI Road World Championships.

The Elite Men tackle this climb four times on Sunday, while the Elite Women race over Challambra Crescent twice on their way to the finish on Saturday.

How to get there: Arrive early to beat the crowds and traffic management treatments. If coming from Melbourne or the Surf Coast use the Princes Freeway and either take the Barrabool Road off ramp* or Princes Highway off ramp and come up via South Valley Road. If coming from central Geelong, why not ride your bike? *This is part of the course so please arrive early.

Parking: The closest off-street parking is Barrabool Hills Plaza or Highton Village. There is limited on-street parking, but we ask that you are respectful when parking on the street in front of residential properties. Mt Pleasant Road is a good option with a walk from here. Please don’t park on the course.

To ensure the safety of the participants and the community, traffic alterations will be in place throughout these events days to ensure the safety of riders, spectators, and residents.

The rolling road closure is expected to pass through the course within 15-20 minutes. This will be supported by some fixed road closures to assist in keeping the course roads free of traffic when the event comes through. All major intersections will remain open, except when the race passes.

Pedestrian access will be maintained at all times during the event via existing footpaths. Where roads are closed for short periods, access across roads will be via marshalled course crossing points.

It is advised to allow extra travel time on event days in case you experience short delays whilst travelling near the course.

Mildlife announces national 2024 headline tour

In a psychedelic whirlwind of sound and self-discovery, Naarm/Melbourne’s own Mildlife drops their latest single, ‘Yourself,’ setting the stage for their eagerly awaited third studio album, Chorus, scheduled to hit the airwaves on March 1, 2024, via PIAS Australia.

As the anticipation builds for Chorus, Mildlife announces a nationwide album tour slated for June and July. The tour kicks off in Walyalup/Fremantle on June 21, making stops in Cavanbah/Byron Bay, Eora/Sydney, and concluding with a homecoming show in Naarm/Melbourne on July 6.

Mildlife’s Chorus Tour Dates

  • Friday, June 21 | Freo Social, Walyalup/Fremantle
  • Saturday, June 29 | The Northern, Cavanbah/Byron Bay
  • Friday, July 5 | Factory Theatre, Eora/Sydney
  • Saturday, July 6 | Northcote Theatre, Naarm/Melbourne

Keep up with the latest music news, festivals, interviews and reviews here.

The dual ARIA Award-winning band takes a giant leap with ‘Yourself,’ a vocal-forward, slinky jam that delves into the realms of meaningful self-acceptance and the joy found in shared purpose. Kevin McDowell, one of the quartet, describes the track as emotionally positive, uplifting, and bright—a testament to the band’s evolution towards embracing brighter sounds for a sense of freshness.

‘Yourself’ follows the release of ‘Musica’ and ‘Return to Centaurus,’ paving the way for Chorus, a record that promises to be Mildlife’s most optimistic venture yet. The band, known for their genre-blending style, combines elements of jazz, dance, prog, and psychedelia into an entrancing musical amalgam.

Chorus, described by the band’s Jim Rindfleish as a coming together of disparate elements, reflects Mildlife’s unwavering adoration for 70s psychedelic and cosmic sounds. The album embraces a wide spectrum of influences, from Polish jazz to Italo disco and contemporary electronic sounds. It’s an exploration of cosmic compatibility and chemistry, symbolizing the rhythm of nature.

In contrast to their previous albums, Chorus stands out as Mildlife’s most optimistic record, a sonic celebration of their love for psychedelic and cosmic sounds. The band members take turns expressing their visions, creating a unified openness and humanity in their sound.

“We had this idea that we wanted to create a kind of disparate ecosystem of living things,” says Craig Shanahan, a regular collaborator. “We liked the idea of creating a small metaphor of moving through space. You see moments of things and sounds that may not emerge again until everything around you starts to unify.”

With its release, Mildlife once again opens a portal to their unique rhythmic realm. Step into the flow and experience the magic of Chorus.

Highly Contagious is the new event bringing Gut Health, Sneaks and more to Brunswick

Today, Naarm’s operators in the outsider underground – Crown Ruler and Slow Clap – are proud to present Highly Contagious: A twilight musical mass held at Estonian House for Brunswick Music Festival, curated by sonic explorers of hypnotic dance-punk Gut Health.

Held Saturday 9 March at Brunswick’s brilliant Estonian House, Highly Contagiousis dishing up a veritable feast of globally acclaimed international talent and local crowdpleasers, including the long-awaited debut from one of post-punk’s most crucial voices Sneaks (USA), New Zealand electronic enigma Vanessa Worm, and Greece’s savage punk instigators, Frenzee. Alongside these heaters, DJs Lori and Cease and Desist (DJ Daddy) will elevate the event to euphoric levels with their fine selections.

Keep up with the latest music news, festivals, interviews and reviews here.

By way of backstory, Highly Contagious was an underground music zine created by Adam Markmann of Gut Health, alongside active members in the Naarm/Melbourne music community Fergus Sinclair and Rowena Lloyd. Gut Health has decided to resurrect Highly Contagious for Brunswick Music Festival and beyond. Remember the name, you’ll see it again.

In the meantime, get acquainted with the performing outfits below.

Gut Health

Sonically daring. Visually adventurous. Hypnotic art-punk with an edge. Six-piece ensemble Gut Health has emerged from the Naarm/Melbourne underground as one of Australia’s most compelling new acts, who are swiftly gaining some serious global attention.

Sneaks

Merge Records mainstay Eva Moolchan, aka Sneaks, comes to Australia for the very first time. Astrological assertions alongside poetry filtered through a riot grrl spirit, Sneaks’ music is a kaleidoscopic tumble into the interpretations of individual listeners – all set against a backdrop of thumping bass lines and infectious beats.

Vanessa Worm

Equal parts vocalist, producer and performer, Vanessa Worm is an artist who has captured the imaginations of tastemakers like the Public Possession DJs, Animals Dancing, JD Twitch, and Tim Sweeney. Her music sits somewhere between the attitude and snarl of New York post-punk, the D.I.Y innovation of the South Island’s ‘80s Flying Nun scene, and the commanding dancefloor power of house, techno and jungle.

Frenzee

There’s been an eruption of punk in Greece of late, and Crete-based siblings Apollonia, Adonis and Nick Xylouris have lit the spark. Hair-trigger tight, pulverisingly mean and all parts lean, the firing collective synapses bonded by blood and hours of repetition are on full display where Frenzee is concerned.

“This is the event’s most diverse lineup yet. Aireys residents have pretty broad tastes and they love to dance so we have booked some of the best purveyors of blues, ska, psychedelic rock, R ‘n’ B, folk, funk, country and disco. You’d be hard-pressed the find a more fun festival line-up for under $100 anywhere on the planet,’’ said festival Creative Director Patrick Donovan.

Aireys Inlet, a coastal hamlet where the Great Ocean Road meets the Great Otway National Park, is 90 minutes drive from Melbourne. It is a magnet for artists and creatives, and the festival was a key part of its recognition as Victoria’s Top Tiny Tourism Award for 2023 (and second in Australia’s Top Tourism Town Awards).

Local music champion Marty Maher ran the event for 15 years as an Open Mic event with a high-profile mystery guest (including Hoodoo Gurus and Tash Sultana), but since Covid it has been transformed into an accessible ticketed event that boosts spending in the town by 26 per cent.

Tickets: $50 early bird weekend pass. For more information: airysinlet.com.au.
