Black Pumas shine bright on Chronicles of a Diamond: ‘It was no small feat for us as a duo traversing the unknown’

So, as you can imagine, there was a lot of pressure when the Austin-based soul rock outfit got into the studio to record album number two.

“We all felt the pressure,” states the group’s lead singer, Eric Burton. “I know I felt the pressure. But I think it did give me solace to learn that everyone in the band was experiencing these heights for the first time. And so while we had and have a healthy level of confidence in ourselves individually, there was quite a bit of pressure to reciprocate something we felt proud of ourselves.”

Pressure, however, breeds diamonds, and on the aptly-named Chronicles of a Diamond, Black Pumas demonstrated once again that they’re no one-trick ponies.

Keep up with the latest music news, festivals, interviews and reviews here.

Traversing the unknown, Burton reflects, “It was no small feat for us as a duo traversing the unknown. But we have the confidence of having a great band and such a brilliant place to start in Adrian Quesada. And his ability, in conjunction with some of my songwriting that I’ve been able to bring to the table, made it that much easier for us to explore new terrain.”

The writing process for this album was heavily influenced by an unrelenting tour schedule. Burton shares, “We wrote a lot of the vibe, and what you hear on this new record, during every off time that we had on the road and during soundchecks.

“But I think it works to our strength, to write some of the music and allow the ideas to be initiated on the road. You get to hear a lot of what was in the moment of just being out on tour and the excitement that came with all of that.

“And being able to play those songs live before finishing them in the studio definitely influenced the way we concluded what you would hear on the record.”

This trait is evident upon listening to Chronicles of a Diamond; in particular when it comes around to the swaggering ‘Rock and Roll’, a kaleidoscopic yet slow-burning closer that melds aspects of soul alongside psychedelia and rock n roll to create a soaring masterpiece in the albums closing moments.

Burton reveals, “While we hadn’t performed that song live yet, I do believe that there was a sense of excitability that implored that idea out of us.

“‘Rock and Roll’ was an idea that came from maybe a few months prior, where we were doing a show in Texas, and 15 minutes before the show I was inspired and kind of captured three chords and a melody, as well as the title of the song, which I recorded on a voice memo. Then we find ourselves in Amsterdam, where that idea just made complete sense to bring to life. It just felt fitting during that time.

“We’ve been really lucky to have played songs that are on the new album for audiences while we were touring because we got to know how people would respond to them.”

Discussing the added difficulties of writing on the road, Burton notes, “We’re a band that doesn’t stop writing ideas. We’re just always working, which I think is really a part of our secret sauce. Like we’re always working without any necessary direction in mind outside of just being inspired individually.

“I think the main challenge for me was communicating my own ideas in a way that someone like Adrian Quesada could palette himself to embellish upon for a concluded piece.

“So I think that it’s been an interesting journey to be able to meet each other where we are at, to then add to what we are building together in ways that are supportive of the next person.”

As the group embarks on a sold-out national tour in America, Aussie fans may have to wait a bit longer to witness the greatness of a Black Pumas live set.

Burton cheekily confirms, “Australia is definitely at the top of my list of places that I would like to go and share some of my art and as well as learn from the culture. It just seems like a lot of fun there. So hopefully we can encourage management to get on top of that soon.”

Lace up your hiking boots and explore these 10 waterfalls near Lorne

The view of foamy water falling over the rocks and into a pool leaving you in a mist of freshness is something that can only be described when you witness a waterfall for the first time, and when you go on a misty, cold winters day, the experience is second to none. Fortunately for us here in regional Victoria, we have waterfalls deliver all of this and more at an arms length away.

If you’re feeling like getting out of the house for a day and exploring the beauty that is the Great Ocean Road, we’ve tracked down 10 cascading rivers accessed by a range of awe-inspiring bush walks located just 10 minutes from Lorne, located just over an hour from Geelong and two hours from Melbourne. Just be sure to check updated information on the tracks ahead of your trip.

Erskine Falls

In a region known for its magnificent waterfalls, Erskine Falls stands out as one of the best, plunging (or trickling, depending on recent rainfall levels) down a 30-metre drop into the Erskine River.

To indulge in the beauty that it is, there’s an easy walk to the first lookout (about 300m), or a more strenuous but rewarding climb down 230 steps through lush rainforest to the second lookout, where you will see the waterfall in all its glory. The Erskine River Walk to Lorne continues off downstream from here if you are prepared for the 7.5km walk.

You can find the exact location here.

Won Wondah Falls

Amble along a gentle track to reach Won Wondah Falls. A short walk, just 3.6km long, the entire family can journey through the midst of a glorious fern gully, crossing paths with these spectacular natural phenomenons along the way. The falls plunge downwards into a valley which is covered by lush vegetation, making it rather difficult to view or access their base, however, beautiful nonetheless.

You can find its location here.

Henderson Falls

Some of Lorne’s best waterfall walks start from Sheoak Picnic Area, including this one. The Henderson Falls Walk gently climbs from here with a few small dips and raises through dense wet forest shadowed by towering eucalypt trees. You will finish your short journey (3km, one hour return trip) at the base of Henderson Falls, cascading over a moss-capped cliff face to a small pool below. There’s also a short diversion to see Won Wondah Falls.

Find it on alpaca maps here.

Phantom Falls

This walk from Sheoak Picnic Area to Phantom Falls is packed with highlights. You’ll see the aforementioned Won Wondah Falls and Henderson Falls, as well as the lost world of The Canyon on your way to Phantom Falls. After crossing the marvellous St George River and hugging the edge of an orchard, this walk climbs on a vehicle track above the rocky bed of St George river. A moderate 3.5km walk (one way), Phantom Falls is perfect for those lazy Sunday adventurers.

Upper and Lower Kalimna Falls

Embrace history with this gentle walk tracing the route of an old timber tramway used for transporting timber to the Lorne pier between the 1890’s and 1920’s. From the picnic area, the path winds through a picturesque creek valley that is lined with lush ferns and towering blue gums to Lower Kalimna Falls. The hiking trail can become quite muddy in parts, esepcially if it’s recently rained. Once you get there, it’s the perfect spot for a picnic beside the falls that plunge over an undercut rock ledge into a tranquil fern-fringed pool.

Continue on to Upper Kalimna Falls, where dense tree ferns frame the 15-metre falls as they cascade down the steep rock face onto mossy boulders below.

Find the route here.

Cumberland Falls

If you’re ready to experience one of the most beautiful river Valleys in the Otways, this is it. With dramatic but magnificent cliffs, gentle streams, peaceful pools, and never ending views, these memories will stay with you forever. It’s about a 6km return walk, but we aware that there are numerous river crossing and some unsteady rocks under foot – nothing a decent hiking boot can’t handle. Those with a taste for adventure will fall in love with Cumberland Falls and never look back… we promise.

Sheoak Falls

Sheoak Falls is a place of tranquillity and beauty just off the Great Ocean Road. To see it for yourself, it’s a 3.6km walk (one way) from the Sheoak Picnic Area through wet forest to the hidden cascades of Sheoak Falls. Here, the waters of Sheoak Creek cascade 15m down a sheer rock face into a pool surrounded by trees before continuing down to the ocean. If you’d prefer not to return to Sheoak Picnic Area via the same route, you can arrange to be picked up at Sheoak Falls Carpark.

This is one of the more popular waterfalls near Lorne and is a perfect break from your Great Ocean Road drive.

Swallow Cave

Swallow Cave is actually just the Upper part of Sheoak Falls, but no less beautiful and worthy of its own mention. On the way to Sheoak Falls (as above), there’s the option to head up a staircase on the left side, instead of walking down to the right. It’s here where you will find the quaint and beautiful Shallow Cave. A 2.2km return moderate walk, winter is stunning no doubt, but the caves truly come alive from spring to autumn, when the sun is shining and nesting birds are present.

Cora Lynn Cascades

The Cora Lynn Cascades may not be the most spectacular falls in the Otways, but they are certainly beautiful and worth a visit. The walk takes you through tall eucalyptus and shady, lush tree ferns to an open area at the base of breathtaking cascades, which flow over a series of exposed shale ledges, framed by luxuriant ferns and mosses. A 4.2km round trip (allow two hours) from the Blanket Leaf Picnic Area, pack up your lunches and prepare to get acquainted with the glorious earthly surroundings.

Please note, the track is very hilly – downhill from the picnic area to the Cascades and uphill on the way back so watch your step!

Aireys Inlet Music Festival shines a spotlight on local artists and coastal charm in 2024

Set against the backdrop of sun-kissed shores and lush hinterlands, this year’s festival promises a musical journey like no other, showcasing the rich tapestry of sounds woven by local artists and emerging talents.

At the helm of Aireys Inlet Music Festival, now in its 18th year, are Artistic Director Patrick Donovan and programmer Ed Prendergast, whose passion for music and community has guided the festival’s evolution over the years.

Keep up with the latest music news, festivals, interviews and reviews here.

A post shared by Aireys Music Festival (@aireysinletmusicfest)

The transition from an open mic event to a ticketed festival has been instrumental in shaping the festival’s identity in recent years. Donovan explains, “The Open Mic format was a sensational way for undiscovered artists to find an audience. Since the lockdowns, we recognise the disastrous impact that had on artists’ income, so we decided to narrow the field, provide meticulous curation, and focus on more established artists.”

This shift has not only ensured fair compensation for performers but has also elevated the festival experience for attendees, who can now enjoy a carefully curated lineup of top-tier talent.

Indeed, this commitment to incredible talent is evident in the festival’s lineup, which reads like a love letter to the vibrant musical community thriving along the Great Ocean Road. From the soulful ballads of Henry Wagons to the infectious energy of ska favourites The Resignators, the Aireys Inlet Music Festival represents more than just a weekend of entertainment; it’s a celebration of the unique spirit and creativity that permeates regional Australia.

In curating the festival lineup, Donovan and Prendergast strive to strike a balance between showcasing local talent and bringing in established acts. “The festival has always had a very wide and diverse range of artists. This had been deliberate from day one to enhance the appeal.

“We like to mix it up and give the audience a combination of familiarity and interesting new surprises.”

From local favourites like Owsley, Beans, and Honk to acclaimed artists such as Matt Walker, Kylie Audlist, and Ashley Davies, the lineup promises something for everyone.

“Sunset is becoming a legendary slot at the festival,” they explain. “After Immy Owusu last year, Sand Pebbles play their shimmering psych surf rock on Friday and Matt [Walker] and Ash [Davies] have the slot on Saturday. This is a dream come true for the festival and we expect it to be spoken about for years to come.”

While championing the diverse array of musicians that call the region home remains key, this year the festival will host its first international act, with the Cambodian Space Project bringing their unique funky pop from Cambodia via Womad to the town on Sunday afternoon.

“We got very lucky with the Cambodian Space Project… They will bring plenty of vibrancy and colour, as will Tek Tek ensemble. We have a modest budget, but will do our best to drag in touring artists when the opportunity arises.”

So what sets the Aireys Inlet Music Festival apart from other regional festivals, according to Donovan? “It’s a boutique event that celebrates its local community – with a thousand friends from nearby towns, Geelong, and the big smoke.”

With stages scattered across town, attendees are treated to a unique musical experience that showcases the region’s diverse venues and vibrant cultural scene. “Music is all over the town in some unique venues,” Donovan enthuses. “It’s run for free by the community for the community – a labour of love.”

Looking ahead, Donovan and Prendergast see the festival as a vital contributor to Victoria’s live music ecosystem. “Boutique festivals are incubators for emerging bands and opportunities for people to enjoy music in an intimate comfortable setting, while uniting the community and boosting spend in the town,” he notes.

“This festival is obviously great for local music lovers, however it also brings in a large number of visitors from around the state. These visitors quickly see how amazing the beaches and forests are, and also see the quality of the dining and entertainment offerings. For a small town, Airey’s punches well above its weight for diners and revellers.”

Despite challenges such as rising costs and unpredictable weather, they remain optimistic about the festival’s future, citing its dedicated community support and commitment to showcasing the best of regional talent.

“We want it to become a festival where bands really want to play so we can keep evolving. We aim to keep up the volunteer aspect of the festival in order to keep costs down, ticket prices down, and the artists fully rewarded for their performances.”

With each passing year, the Aireys Inlet Music Festival continues to shine as a beacon of creativity, community, and coastal charm – a testament to the enduring creative spirit of regional Australia.

As for what Donovan hopes festival-goers take away from their experience at the event: “A bloody good time, and a thirst and curiosity for interesting new music and uncovering their favourite new band. And dreams to return to the town.”

Anya Alchemy

How do you find being a female singer songwriter in Melbourne?

I think that Melbourne is absolutely full of music and is the best place to be if you’re wanting to be a performing musician. I feel like everyone I know in Melb is in a band or plays an instrument, so it’s really easy to find your community of people with similar interests.

What are the main challenges facing indie artists?

I think, as a woman, I’ve really noticed that trying to get support spots opening for men is a real challenge as most male performers have male openers. This is slowly changing but is still a real obstacle that a lot of women face. I also think that the monetary factor of having to compete with artists that have a label paying for everything is also a big challenge.

Any tips for up and coming artists?

My mantra has always been to just keep writing. It only takes one song so if you’re writing everyday (even just little voice memos/one-liners) then your chances of breaking through are much higher.

Hello Sunshine has such an excellent Aussie lineup, are there any artists on the lineup that you’re particularly excited to see and share the stage with?

I grew up listening to The Veronica’s so I’m absolutely over the moon that we’ll be sharing the stage. I’m equally as excited for the more country acts such as Brad Cox and Pete Murray though!

Does a festival environment change your set much, how does it affect your performance and connection with the audience?

I think a festival audience wants upbeat music that will make them want to move. I’ve changed some of the arrangements of my slower ballads so that they’ll still have their place next to my faster songs.

D’Arcy Spiller

How do you find being a Melb singer songwriter?

Honestly? I find it a little challenging at times. I’ve found that there are more artists in Sydney than in Melbourne. I heard someone say once that Melbourne is the live music and Sydney is the industry. The city and culture here in Melbourne is really inspiring though. A lot of the artists, producers and music directors I know have moved overseas for various reasons relating to the industry.

What are the main challenges facing indie artists?

I think due to such a dense market it’s hard to be seen especially so for those who are taking on the industry on their own. There’s also a lack of resources although there are platforms like Ditto now which are a big game changer.

Any tips for up and coming artists?

Some hard facts I learnt from labels were that you need to find your thing, your own sound and look. Don’t try to sound like your icons otherwise it’s going to be a short ride. Make sure you understand the business side of the industry cause it can be complex. Be prepared to work hard and understand that success won’t come overnight but keep going. There may be a time where you feel alone, don’t know who to trust and are unsure of the future. All I can say is trust your instincts, surround yourself with other artists and mingle. Lastly, anything is possible, do not be discouraged and enjoy your craft!!!

Hello Sunshine has such an excellent Aussie lineup, are there any artists on the lineup that you’re particularly excited to see and share the stage with?

I’m a fan of Bliss n Eso!! Their songs inspired me to write some of my first ever songs when I was 15/16 so I’m excited to see them. I love their story telling.

You’ve got a gorgeous set of twins, will they be coming to HELLO SUNSHINE to watch Mama perform?
Aw thank you! They will definitely be coming along to Hello Sunshine. Any chance they get to see me up on stage, they want to be there.

Will they be most excited to watch you, or The Wiggles who are playing a little after you on the same stage?
I’d love to say myself but let’s be real, they are definitely going to lose their minds over seeing The Wiggles for the first time! They’re also pretty excited to see The Veronicas too. Which might be my influence haha.

How do you find being a female singer songwriter in Melbourne?
It’s really exciting to be an artist in Melbourne right now. There are so many opportunities for collaborating whether that be with performance, writing or recording and everyone is so supportive. The community here is really something special.

What are the main challenges facing indie artists?
I think the biggest challenge can be funding your career. Any normal career path you earn your wage and that’s that but it’s a whole different game in the music industry. You make money to put it back into your career, whether that be to record or put on a tour. It’s just a vicious cycle.

Any tips for up and coming artists?
Be Resilient! Know your worth. Practice writing and write with others. And make sure you always love what you do.

Hello Sunshine has such an excellent Aussie lineup, are there any artists on the lineup that you’re particularly excited to see and share the stage with?
The lineup is incredible! But I have to say The Veronicas! ‘The Secret Life Of Us’ album was one of the soundtracks to my teenage years so I can’t wait to see them perform! I’m also a HUGE Brad Cox fan and love the show he puts on for everyone!

A Glimpse into Their World: Artist-to-Artist Conversations

Anya, D’Arcy, and Jay engage in candid exchanges, discussing topics ranging from tackling gender stereotypes in the music industry to their hopes for the future of Melbourne’s music scene.

Anya to Jay

How do you tackle being a mum and a musician at the same time? I feel like women have historically been told that you can’t do both and remain successful at both, what do you say to people who still have that mindset?

I think it’s not for everyone, and that’s totally fine. I can definitely see how for some people the juggling act would be incredibly hard BUT I also think that if you want both bad enough, then why not give it a good crack? I don’t think it should be as Black and white as “Be a musician or be a mother” A key thing as well is what support you have around you, I’m very lucky to have an amazing support group around me. If I didn’t have them, this would be a completely different answer. My girls are starting to understand what mama does and they love seeing me on stage and following my dream, that paired with a husband who backs me every inch of the way is also a massive help.

Anya to Darcy

What do you think the Melbourne music scene is missing at the moment?

I think we’ve lost over 1000 mid sized live music venues since covid which were detrimental to up and coming artists. They were places that now bigger artists started off playing at and they created a community and creative space. The economy is making it really hard for live venues to succeed therefore sadly we artists suffer in return. High expenses means less spend per head unfortunately and I totally get why. We are in need of creative thinking, support for live music venues & opportunity. We need to shake things up and think outside the box.

What do you think the future of our music scene will look like/what do you want it to look like ?

I hope that Australian artist are given recognition internationally like G FLIP for example!! They are smashing it worldwide. I’d also like to see more female artists/bands at festivals too. I really hope that there’s a resolution for the struggle that up & coming artists are having at the moment due certain social platforms and streaming. The market is highly saturated too though, so you can put all the struggle on social platforms. It’s intense having to compete for things like festivals but I love that we have so much talent.

Jay to Anya

What is one thing you’d love people to take away from your live performances?

I’d love for people to feel like they’ve just had an “experience”, like going to the movies. You’re in your own little bubble, the “movie” is all you can focus on and then, if it’s good, you leave and feel like a tiny piece of you has changed. I’d like that 🙂

Sky’s the limit – If you could sit down and write with any artist/songwriter, who would it be and why?

I’d love to sit down with someone like Ryan Tedder and just see what’s his process is like in the studio. He’s responsible for so many hits and just being able to analyse everything he’s doing would be so cool.

Jay to D’arcy

Who are your biggest musical influences?

My biggest musical influences are eclectic. My moods change who influences my music regularly but that doesn’t mean it influences my music to change sporadically genre wise. I don’t know if that makes sense. It’s the detailed, carefully chosen lyrics, voice uniqueness (vibrato, husk) and powerful emotions that arise that will make me say yes you are either going to no doubt be the soundtrack playing in my dreams or playing in my car over and over. I’ll give you some names:

Matt Maeson
Teddy Swims
LP
Upsahl
Grandson
Labrinth
Lenii
Stephen Sanchez
Layto
Royal & the serpent

Do you believe an artist should only stick to one genre or are you all for artists being more fluid and playing whatever they feel?

Nahhh! I believe artists have different stages or “eras” if you will. Dua Lipa for instance has gone from disco to what she calls “dance crying. I’ll also just say that general mainstream genres are on their way out. You could once upon a time have been a punk/pop singer like yourself Jay and then swapped to country but as long as you have that one niche that one signature that lines up the switch I think why not? I’m diverting from indie/folk/pop to ‘dark/moody pop. I’m really excited to share the new stuff I’ve been working on.

D’Arcy to Jay

If you were to write a song about an important political, social or environmental issue, what would it be?

I think I would be more inclined to write about a social issue. Possibly about Poverty/people less fortunate than myself and the tragedy of it all. I guess something along the lines of a ‘We Are The World’ vibe.

What made you immerse yourself in the pop/punk scene before landing on the country/pop genre? Did changing to that genre help ground or find yourself in any way?

In my early teen years, I was drawn to the emo scene, envisioning myself as the next Hayley Williams, haha. When I transferred to a new high school in Year 9, I was invited to join a pop/punk band. This experience taught me a lot about performing and being part of a group. Eventually, it helped me clarify my identity as an artist. As that chapter closed, I began writing songs solo, reconnecting with the music I grew up listening to as a young kid.

What do you love most about performing live?

I love the exhilarating feeling of sharing my stories with people and forming connections through my songs during live performances.

And if you could do a tour anywhere in the world where would you do it?

Oooo! I would love to tour Europe/UK. I’ve had a number of friends do it and the crowds over there just seem to be amazing.

D’Arcy to Anya

How would you describe your music to a new listener and what is it you want the listeners to take from you music? You’ve been described as emo, hippie, cowgirl which I think is a totally new and awesome spin as a sub genre.

I would describe my music as pop country with a bit of spice but I also feel like emo, hippie, cowgirl sums it up pretty well. My main thing is that I love to tell stories so I’d love listeners to really delve into what I’m trying to say and create a movie in their heads.

You’re looking into a mirror that tells you the future. What do you see?

For myself? I see the music I’m going to put out this year doing really well, my dog walking nicely on the lead and a lot of changes as my circle and team grows. I’m so excited.

If you could have anything you wanted during a show what would it be (set up, lights, effects etc).

I want fire so bad or a t-shirt gun.

What are your favourite live music venues in Melbourne?

I love Rooks Return, Birds Basement and my local, Sooki Lounge.

With their infectious enthusiasm and unwavering dedication, Anya Alchemy, D’Arcy Spiller, and Jay Santilli embody the essence of Melbourne’s thriving music community. Catch them on Saturday, 2 March 2024, at Caribbean Gardens.

Dark Light to Neon: The Illumination of Ville Valo

He expanded the music ecology under the HIM band banner with a subgenre he appropriately coined love metal – the title of their illustrious fourth album – and symbolised their sonic revolution with an arcuate-topped pentagram, adoringly branded the Heartagram.

26 years of being the gothic poster boy for the most commercially successful Finnish bands of all time came at a cost to the highly sought-after rock god. As quickly as the accolades came, so did the bitter trials of fast fame; the attention, the hypersexualisation and scrutiny from the media, the substance abuse, and, of course, visits from the mental health demons.

Keep up with the latest music news, festivals, interviews and reviews here.

“It was very intense…It seems I woke up from the slumber, that zombified state of being in a gothic boy band for Love Metal,” Valo explains.

“I was definitely out of my depth. It felt very uncomfortable at times and not only for that [sexualisation]. It just felt like we were taken from the middle of nowhere into the big wide world and there’s a lot of firsts and a lot of things we didn’t know when, what and how to deal with…It was a good mess. Somebody has to go through it. So it’s good for mankind; small steps for me, but massive steps for mankind.”

The final nail in the band’s career coffin came on 5 March 2017. Black eyeliner bled from the eyes of fans around the world at the death of HIM, burying with them eight multi-award-winning studio albums. Whilst fans longed for a HIM resurrection, Valo took a detour to Finnish schlager group, Agents, but it wouldn’t be long before the darkness would lace his heart again.

With the twin alliteration of his name condensed to a sharp VV, Valo’s reincarnation is marked by an echoing titular double, Neon Noir. Spawning from the toe-dip three-track EP titled Gothica Fennica, Neon Noir continues Valo’s descent into the melancholic maelstrom.

“This is a continuation of the same thing more or less and that is because that is the only way I know how to communicate, musically speaking. I was trying to change my stripes, but I couldn’t. I always found myself in a similar spot musically because, at the end of the day, aurally you’re trying to please yourself and it seems that those same things still tend to please me,” he admits.

Bleeding his entire self into the Emma Award Best Rock Album of 2024, writing and undertaking all instrumentation in solitude, Neon Noir is more than an exterior glow. It has reignited Valo’s internal flame.

“I felt that I needed to challenge myself and be a tad egotistical once again and let it be known that it’s all about me, me, me,” he laughs.

“I think it’s been endearing for such an old dog like myself to find new avenues of being creative and the newness of it all. I think it’s a good idea for everybody to become a solo artist at least once in their lifetime.”

Whilst a pandemic size pit and pendulum (a Poe reference that finally spilled from Valo’s pen on ‘Heartful of Ghosts’), plagued this project, career collaborators, companions and life constants Mikko “Mige” Paananen, and album co-producer, Tim Palmer, helped pull Valo to the neon lights.

“Maybe a tad too much I got lost in the woods at times, but that’s what you have to do. You have to be a bit kooky and get even a bit crazier in the process of making music and making an album. It has to be all-encompassing. It has to take over. It is like a demonic possession of sorts, an album making is,” he jokes, twitching a pearly-white smile.

“Mige, the bass player of HIM, came to my studio during the pandemic and gave me the thumbs up, thumbs down regarding the work I was doing while also checking whether I’m in a good place, mentally speaking…and Tim was able to understand what I was going for and also give me the sort of kick in the butt when I was losing my hope.”

A post shared by VV (@heartagram)

The harsh cold and a 3 pm night sky drowning the city of Helsinki – a stark contrast to the sun-soaked setting greeting him this month on his Australian tour – yet again cocooned Valo in a melancholic stupor of hope-lost, both lyrically etched on the gravestone of Neon Noir and tangled in its entwined 80’s gloom/pop web.

That misery still seeping into his songwriting seems to have escaped Valo somewhat in disposition. His naked eyes, cleansed of his signature smudged black eyeliner, scintillate with pride as he discusses his rebirth. Years of concern for his condition and wellbeing have dissipated.

This sober, focused, reincarnated version of Ville Valo embodies another double alliteration; happy and healthy.

“[Neon Noir] has given myself a reason to be, to exist, as music always does…I’m happy to have found out that there are new things to learn about music and new things to get inspired by.”

Catch Ville Valo at Northcote Theatre on Friday 15 March. Tickets to the VV/HIM cocktail are available at Moshtix

Melbourne rockers Lucy’s Disorder unleash explosive debut single ‘Tell Me A Secret’

Melbourne’s sonic renegades, Lucy’s Disorder, have just dropped their electrifying debut single, ‘Tell Me a Secret’. The quartet, comprised of Nicolas Torres, Mike Palomeque, Zoe Alexa, and Shane Clark, has been making waves in the city’s indie underground scene since their recent formation in 2023.

Crafted by Torres’ whimsical mind, ‘Tell Me a Secret’ is a four-minute whirlwind of chaos and charisma. From the outset, the track hits hard with booming drums, twangy guitar riffs, and a thick bassline that sets the stage for Torres’ Alex Turner-esque drawl and sharp and evocative lyrics. It’s a blend of viscous indie-rock with a distinctly Naarm twist, pulling you into its world of youthful exuberance and quirky revelations.

Produced by the renowned multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, producer Josh Ten, ‘Tell Me a Secret’ encapsulates the essence of Lucy’s Disorder’s live energy. The track invites listeners to embrace the uncertain, to dance like nobody’s watching, and to revel in the sheer madness of life. With loud, distorted guitars, captivating vocals and a fist-pumping melody, inspired by the likes of Arctic Monkeys and other alt-rock icons, it’s an anthem for those who aren’t afraid to let loose and embrace the chaos.

Despite being relatively new on the scene, Lucy’s Disorder has already made a name for themselves with their relentless onstage energy and razor-sharp performances. Having shared bills with local legends like Hot Glue, Blank Face, Shock Collar, and Mystic Tea Party, the band has built a solid fanbase eagerly awaiting their debut release.

With ‘Tell Me a Secret’, Lucy’s Disorder is set to make a lasting impression on Melbourne’s music scene. It’s a seriously impressive debut, with the band shaking up the indie underground with their infectious charm and chaotic sound.

This is one band that is definitely worth keeping an eye on.

Cigarettes After Sex announce Australia and New Zealand tour for 2025

Led by bandleader Greg Gonzalez, Cigarettes After Sex presents a deeply introspective narrative in ‘X’s’, delving into the nuances of a singular four-year relationship. Filled with raw, evocative imagery set against entrancing, slow-burning pop melodies, the album encapsulates the myriad emotions inherent in the arc of romance.

Reflecting on the album’s thematic focus, Gonzalez acknowledges its intensity, stating, “The record feels brutal,” admits Gonzalez. “I could sit and talk about this loss to someone, but that wouldn’t scratch the surface. I have to really write about it, sing about it, have the music, and then I can start to analyze and learn from it. Or just relive it—in a good way. I don’t have that Eternal Sunshine-thing of wanting to forget.”

While the band continues to embrace classic pop song structures, their sonic palette has evolved towards a ’70s/’80s slow dance aesthetic, departing from the ’50s and ’60s influences of their previous work. Despite these subtle shifts, the essence of Cigarettes After Sex remains intact, offering listeners a poignant blend of sensuality and nostalgia, reminiscent of tears refracted through a disco ball on the dance floor.

Accompanying this announcement is the release of the album’s lead single, ‘Tejano Blue’, which pays homage to Gonzalez’s Texas upbringing. Infused with elements of Tejano music, the track represents a convergence of cultural influences, marrying the artist’s childhood roots with his eclectic musical journey.

Speaking on the inspiration behind ‘Tejano Blue’, Gonzalez shares, “I had the idea then to try to combine both of their sounds somehow, which felt a bit strange, but also felt like it was coming from a genuine place of rediscovering & finally connecting with the music that I heard around me in my youth.”

‘Tejano Blue’ is now available, offering listeners a glimpse into the captivating world of Cigarettes After Sex. The band’s new LP, ‘X’s’, is set to release on July 12th via Partisan Records / Liberator Music.

Presale tickets will be available throughout the week leading up to the general on-sale, commencing on Friday, March 8 at 10 am local time on cigarettesaftersex.com.
