A magical Eta Aquariid meteor shower will light up Australia’s sky this weekend

Happy days for stargazers, this weekend you’re in for a treat with a special meteor shower lighting up the night sky.

The Eta Aquariid meteor shower is an annual event that occurs every year from late April to mid-May. Already in effect, this year the peak of the meteor shower is expected to occur on the morning of May 6th, 2023, with exceptional viewing from 5-7 May.

Stay up to date with what’s happening in and around the region here.

Visible from all across Australia, the Eta Aquariids are one of two meteor showers created by debris from the famous Halley’s Comet, and they are known for their fast-moving shooting stars.

Melbourne stargazers will have a great opportunity to view the Eta Aquariids, as the city offers a relatively clear view of the sky, away from light pollution (so those in regional areas, you’re up for prime viewing!).

To view the meteor shower, it’s best to find a dark location, away from the city lights, and look towards the southeast horizon. The shower will be visible throughout the night, but the best time to view it will be in the early morning hours before dawn, around 3:00 am to 5:00 am.

It’s important to give your eyes time to adjust to the darkness, so be patient and allow at least 20 minutes for your eyes to adapt. Also, it’s recommended to dress warmly and bring a comfortable chair or blanket to sit on, as you may be outside for a while.

The Eta Aquariid meteor shower is a beautiful event that should not be missed. With a clear sky and a bit of luck, viewers in Melbourne can expect to see up to 30 shooting stars per hour during the peak of the shower. In the early hours of May 6 there will also be a penumbral lunar eclipse, lasting about four hours from about 1am before reaching its maximum at 3:22am.

So grab a warm jacket, find a dark spot, and enjoy the show!

Explore these 10 beautiful wine regions in New Zealand and discover just what makes them so special

New Zealand is known for its amazing wine scene, and for good reason! From the tropical Northland to the southernmost vineyards of Central Otago, every region has its own distinctive geography and climate that contribute to the diverse range of wines produced in New Zealand.

“New Zealand’s wine regions are a true reflection of our unique climate and diverse geography. With each region offering its own distinct characteristics, our winemakers are able to craft a range of exceptional wines that truly showcase the best of what New Zealand has to offer,” says Charlotte Read, General Manager Marketing, New Zealand Winegrowers.

A guide to New Zealand’s Wine Regions:

Marlborough: The Most Famous Wine Region

Marlborough is the most well-known wine region in New Zealand, and it’s famous for its Sauvignon Blanc. The region produces over 70% of the country’s wine and is located on the northeastern tip of the South Island. Marlborough has a unique microclimate that produces a crisp, acidic Sauvignon Blanc with distinct notes of grapefruit and tropical fruits.

Central Otago: Pinot Noir Heaven

Central Otago is the southernmost wine region in the world, and it’s famous for its Pinot Noir. The region has a cool, continental climate that produces wines with bold flavors, high acidity, and a distinct minerality. Central Otago’s Pinot Noir is often described as having flavours of dark cherries, raspberries, and blackberries.

Wairarapa is located in the southern part of the North Island and is home to the Martinborough wine region. Martinborough is known for producing elegant, complex Pinot Noir that rivals those from Burgundy, France. North Canterbury: The Gateway to the South Island

North Canterbury is located on the eastern coast of the South Island and is known for producing crisp, acidic wines with a distinct minerality. The region’s cool climate produces wines with a unique acidity and flavours of lime, grapefruit, and passionfruit.

Nelson: Sunshine and Sea Breezes

Nelson is located on the northern tip of the South Island and is known for its Aromatics and Pinot Noir. The region’s hot summers and sea breezes produce wines with a unique combination of flavors, including tropical fruits, citrus, and strawberries.

The Rock Off MND fundraising gala returns this month with live music, comedian Claire Hooper and more

A well-loved event on the Geelong calendar, Rock Off MND is an annual event that continues to increase community awareness of Motor Neurone Disease (MND), provide a platform for significant future growth, and of course, continue to raise money for vital MND research.

Inspired by local Geelong health worker Jenny Simko, who at the age of 53 was diagnosed with MND in 2014, the live music event was created together with her family and friends who were determined to raise as much money as possible to help work towards finding a cure for this cruel disease.

Stay up to date with what’s happening in and around the region here

“After Jen was diagnosed she thought this is such a horrendous disease and there was very little research funding back then. She just really wanted to do something to raise money to try and find a cure for this rotten disease,” says Peter Simko, Jenny’s husband, who one day hopes the world will be free of MND. “We’ve got a lot of friends who are musicians so our original thought was let’s just put on a little show locally somewhere where we might raise a little bit of money and have a bit of fun.”

That was nine years ago now, and while Jenny sadly lost her fight in November 2015, her legacy has only flourished. Since its inception, Rock Off MND has featured the likes of Jon Stevens, Pierce Brothers, Maddy Jane, Imogen Brough, Tim Campbell, Ross Wilson and the Peaceniks, Benny Walker, The Kite Machine, Chunky Jam, Madhouse, Woodlock and Kate Ceberano, among others with the event raising over $900,000 and funding ten Jenny Simko MND Research Grants for research conducted by Australian MND research institutions.

Returning as a fundraising gala after the success of last year’s event, Rock Off MND’s 2023 Fundraising Gala Dinner will take place on Saturday 20 May at GMHBA Stadium, Geelong.

Commencing at 6.30pm, the night will feature great music by Alinta Burnell, and Test Pilot Molly, plus comedian Claire Hooper who is certain to provide lots of laughter.

The evening will feature complimentary drinks on arrival followed by a three-course meal and four hours of complimentary beer, wine and sparkling along with your chance to bid on and win a range of excellent prizes.

Tubular Bells for Two returns for one final tour for 50th anniversary

Tubular Bells; it’s the famous 1973 master-work by composer and multi-instrumentalist Mike Oldfield at the age of 19, which has gone on to become a rare example of a legitimate rock symphony.

With its grand structure (one 49-minute piece split on two sides of vinyl) and complex approach toward harmony and meter, the album was the first release on Richard Branson’s fledgling record label, Virgin Records and went on to sell over 30 million copies – kick-starting the Virgin empire – and becoming the soundtrack to the cult-classic film, The Exorcist.

Keep up with the latest music news, festivals, interviews and reviews here.

It’s a classic, and it’s a classic that inspired two young Australian multi-instrumentalists to present this modern masterpiece in a challenging live event  50 years since its creation, performing every part live with only four hands and four feet between them.

Heading to Melbourne in September, Tubular Bells for Two returns to the stage for one final tour in celebration of the 50th Anniversary of Mike Oldfield’s seminal work.

Taking to the Playhouse on 8-9 September, the show will see two blokes juggle over 20 instruments live on stage in a spellbinding performance.

With the duo literally rushed off their feet as they rush around a sea of instruments (pianos, organs, electric guitars, acoustic and Spanish guitars, bass guitar, mandolin, tuned percussion, drums, glockenspiel, loop pedals, synthesisers) to replicate the masterpiece, Tubular Bells for Two is truly an intricately choreographed, thrilling 70 minute piece of tightrope theatre. Things can go wrong at any moment, and the slightest mistake or misplaced limb can bring the entire show crashing to a halt.

Regardless of whether you’re a Tubular Bells virgin, or long-time fan, Tubular Bells for Two is guaranteed to keep you on the edge of your seat.

It is one of the most innovative musical performances to grace the stage in many years.

See it at The Playhouse at Melbourne Arts Centre from 8-9 September. Find out more and get tickets here.

Australia’s first-ever five-star river cruise experience is coming to regional Victoria

It’s time to round up the crew for a holiday to Echuca, because it will soon become home to Australia’s first 5-star river cruise experience and the only wood-fired, five-star paddlesteamer in the world.

The brand new $6.75 million, luxury 19-cabin vessel will be offering year-round, all-inclusive, overnight cruises from Echuca, a “game-changing” hero drawcard for the region and construction has now begun.

Keep up with the latest in local good news via our website.

Fusing heritage charm with contemporary luxury and stretching 35m, the deluxe 38-guest vessel – coined the PS Australian Star – will become Australia’s first five-star river cruise experience, the largest paddlesteamer in the Southern Hemisphere and the only wood-fired, five-star accommodated paddlesteamer in the world.

Destined to attract luxe-seeking, high-yield visitors from around Australia and around the world, the unique vessel is expected to make its debut journey along the Murray in late 2024 and has been supported with $2.25 million in funding by the Victorian Government’s Regional Tourism Investment Fund which has brought the project forward by three years.

Boasting 19 luxury ensuite cabins, a fine-dining restaurant, panoramic lounge, function area, bars, outside relaxation space, and hybrid propulsion featuring a vintage, refurbished 1907 Richard Garrett and Sons wood-fired steam engine.

All accommodations will open to a verandah and encompass a range of styles from King & Queen suites to generously proportioned Queen & Twin bed cabins. All will offer luxury linen, ensuite, seating area, and a writing desk. There will also be a Discovery Lounge and outdoor seating offering panoramic views of the ever-changing scenery.

Built locally in Mildura and operating from the Port of Echuca, journeys of three, four and seven-night stays will be available with opportunities to explore riverside communities along the way.

As part of the cruise, authentic onshore experiences and onboard enrichment programs focusing on the region’s natural heritage, rich history, and indigenous culture.

The new boat will be the third vessel in our Paddlesteamer’ fleet based in Echuca, joining the popular and famous Paddlesteamers, PS Emmylou and PS Canberra. The 16-guest PS Emmylou currently offers a schedule of two, three, four and six-night cruises which are now 99 percent sold out for 2022. From 1st April 2023, these will change to the new scheduling of three, four, and a new 7-night cruise before PS Australian Star takes over the schedules.

Director, Rohan Burgess said PS Australian Star would prove a ‘game-changing” visitor experience that would meet surging demand for premium, overnight river cruises, reinvigorate the hard-hit, Covid-affected visitor economies of the Murray River border region around Echuca and attract new high-yield domestic and international visitors and lucrative tour group business to Victoria.

“The support of the Victorian Government in helping to fund this high-quality development is very much appreciated,” Mr Burgess said. “Australians love cruising, and they love the Murray River but they want comfort and facilities akin to those on European rivers.

“Demand for overnight cruises on the Murray is at record levels so as a hero visitor drawcard, PS Australian Star will help tap that demand, boost the local economy, create new jobs and cater for the most discerning of visitors, attracting new domestic and international visitors to our region for the first time”.

Mr Burgess said the new, bigger, and more luxurious vessel, which will be built in Mildura, Victoria on the banks of the Murray River using local contractors, trades and suppliers will have strong appeal to charter groups and also national tour companies seeking a larger capacity river vessel for their guests.

He said when PS Australian Star debuts in late 2024, PS Emmylou would focus on the booming business for day sightseeing, lunch and dinner cruises, and overnight charters, alongside fleet mate, PS Canberra.

Fusing the blues with ’70s-influenced surf-rock, Heath takes listeners on a nostalgic trip back in time but manages to do so with a modern and refreshing twist – all without compromising authenticity in any way, shape or form. A true breath of fresh air, Heath’s music has an infectious energy that transports listeners to a sun-drenched beach. With influences like Jack White, and Australian rock icons Angels, Easy Beats, AC/DC, Powderfinger and Jet surging and flourishing throughout his songs, his distinctive guitar riffs are complemented by soulful vocals and a driving rhythm section.

Now Heath is capitalising on that solid foundation with his newest single, full of life and energy, passion and palpable emotion.

Titled ‘You Can Be Found’ and due for release on 12 May, the scorching single is a catchy, raw blues-rock number with notable early Aussie pop-rock influences, melding the iconic sounds of Easybeats and Sunnyboys. Striking the balance between catchy melodies, fun bluesy harmonica and killer guitar solos, the single is fast and punchy and showcases the ‘sophisticated’ style of blues and promises to lift our spirits every time we press play.

Beginning as an instrumental track, Heath was challenged when it came to writing a melody and lyrics until one day he managed to find the right words.

“This song started out as an instrumental and I was unable to write a melody or lyrics for months. Then one day it just happened all at once,” Heath explains.

Most of my songs are written by how I’m feeling at the time I write the song.

“I don’t tend to analyse my lyrics often but I suppose ‘You can be found’ is about how I tend to overthink things and make re-occurring mistakes that need to change to better me as a person.”

Releasing the single on 7” Vinyl, Heath’s release will also include B Side track ‘Leave Me Be’, wielding a bit more grunt, but equally as impressive as its flip side.

“This track was another instrumental that was initially just a fun jam that I recorded on my four track tape recorder,” he says.

“I liked the music too much so I had to write something with it. I pretty much opened my mouth, the words started to come out and I was happy with it.”

The humble multi-instrumentalist not only recorded all instruments and vocals on both tracks (aside from that unapologetically bluesy Harmonica which was played by long-time friend and musical peer, Jack Meredith), but he produced and recorded everything as well. His love of vintage instruments and equipment has been the perfect pairing for his new recordings.

To launch the new single, the award-winning artist will perform at the Barwon Club on 14 May, delivering a set of new, original songs including the long-awaited single and its B side. He will be joined by band newcomers; Fin Strijker on electric guitar (Fenn Wilson) and Alister Hull on bass (Pollyman), with mainstay David Robertson on drums.

“There is so much I love about performing live as a musician. I love the full sound of the band, the way we bounce off each other when we’re performing, and the way audiences respond to that. And I love the adrenaline you get after playing a gig,” Heath beams.

“Meeting new people (musicians and punters) is pretty good too. There’s nothing quite like playing a loud, full sounding set and walking away with ringing in your ears.”

‘We’ve got time on our side’: The Go Set’s Justin Keenan on their new record The Warriors Beneath Us and writing music in lockdown

The Go Set have been a staple of the Australian music scene for many years, playing thousands of shows across the globe to many adoring fans.

Now the Geelong-based band have just dropped their long-awaited eighth studio album The Warriors Beneath Us, 20 years on from their beginnings and still sounding as fierce, as vital, as the first day they set foot on a stage.

“It’s always good to release an album because there’s a sense of relief,”  frontman Justin Keenan says. “A lot of work goes into inception until the final product, and especially during COVID, we’ve had to find new ways to make music together, because we haven’t been able to stay in the same spot.

Keep up with the latest music news, festivals, interviews and reviews here.

“So, we’ve had to think about different ways to run our band, so this was a really big relief to get this album out.”

COVID saw many bands and artists move into interesting ways of performing, writing and recording, with The Go Set finding that the extended self-sequestration allowed them to spend more time on their music.

“If you’re an independent act, you don’t have the benefit of money to make highly produced records and you don’t have the benefit of time to sit around and make five different versions in five different keys and time signatures of a song that you’ve got.

“One of the things about this making this album was that we benefited greatly by having time to be able to determine what version of a song we wanted, and we could tweak it for two weeks. You can’t do that in the studio on an indie band budget.”

“If you lock everyone down and there’s nothing else to do, it’s like, hey, we’ve probably got the same time luxury that The Rolling Stones have got now and then when it comes to production.

“Certain technologies that would have cost thousands of dollars and half a day to get on your records, those things are now all programmed. You can get computer programs that can replicate particular drum sounds, so you can really make the album sound the way you want it to sound with less money as well.

“It really closes the gap between a band like us who have to go and spend our time doing all kinds of other shitty jobs rather than doing what we want to do and that’s making music and also having to spend every cent we make on a studio to try and get a very average record.

“Now, we’ve got great quality production and we’ve got time on our side. But COVID has definitely helped us to make records with those advantages that we didn’t have before.”

Now multiple albums into their illustrious career, The Go Set’s music is jam-packed with sophisticated lyrics that take you on a journey. This continues with The Warriors Beneath Us.

“I think this album is a little bit different; in the past, I wrote the words and then came up with a song or a melody and gave it to the band fairly complete,” Keenan says of the lyric writing process.

“This time around, I would come up with the theme and the majority of the words and then give it to Joel [Colliver], the guitarist who was also our producer, and say ‘I think the song kind of should go like this’ and ‘I think it’s in this key’ and ‘I think this is kind of how the chorus goes’.”

The Warriors Beneath Us features several tracks full of personal stories and moments, with the track ‘Opportunity’ focusing on a chat between members of Keenan’s family.

“That was actually a conversation with my dad, my son and myself that brought that about. And it’s a little bit tongue in cheek as well; I guess all three generations in my family, we’ve all gone through being kind of lefty socialist, protest system type people.

“I know I see my son going through it now and just talking about, ‘I should have done this, I could have done that, I would have done this. This could have been different if I’d done that. Or you should do this’. You always hear that you should do this.”

“Generally, those comments are born out of someone else’s life experience, not yours. You should definitely change the way you do this, or you should break up with that person, or you should do this for a job. And I think that it’s largely about the idealism of youth and then the reality of adult life.”

To mark the release of the album, the band have been travelling across the country for the first time in three years. Having already hit up multiple stages throughout April, the band will be heading to Volta in Ballarat on Friday 5 May and The Barwon Club Hotel in Geelong on Saturday 6 May.

“It’s exciting to be reconnecting with people and getting out on the road. We’ve had limited opportunities over the last couple of years and we’re really excited about sharing the new material at these shows.

“It was something I think we may have taken for granted a while back, but a couple of years of lockdowns and unprecedented difficulty has actually made us realise how much we truly appreciate each other, playing live, and sharing our music with people around the world.”

The Warriors Beneath Us is out now. More info can be found here
