Freya Josephine Hollick is bringing alt-country charm to the Lightning & Rhinestones Festival

Freya Josephine Hollick has been a staple of the Australian music scene for several years, playing a bevy of shows and festivals. Her genre-bending approach to country music has found many fans in all corners of the nation, not solely in capital cities.

“Playing regional towns is a different vibe than playing capital cities”, Freya says. “I find it enjoyable, I grew up in Ballarat and am still there now.

“You’re not really competing for different demographics, people who live in smaller city centres like Geelong and Ballarat gravitate towards the same events, regardless of age, that’s what I like about it.”

Keep up with the latest music news, festivals, interviews and reviews here.

Fresh from her cracking sets at Golden Plains, LoJo and Boogie this year, the Australian cosmic country Queen will be heading to Geelong to headline the brand-new Lightning & Rhinestones music festival.

The first of its kind in Geelong, the alt-country festival will take place on June 18 at the Barwon Club Hotel featuring a line-up of Australia’s most talented alt-country musicians, delicious food and drinks, as well as beginner lessons in two-step dancing.

These shows come months after the release of her latest album, The Real World which was worked on in part at the popular Rancho De La Luna in Joshua Tree, California, alongside a selection of the world’s most recognised and well-regarded musicians.

“They’re all amazing players in there, they’ve all been doing it for such a long time. But when you’re working with any musician, regardless of whether they’re a big deal and have been playing for 50 years, or someone that’s been playing for 10 years, the experience is always pretty similar when people are passionate about music,” she explains.

“Although, it was an amazing experience, and they’re all amazing musicians, the pearls of wisdom that you get come from all kinds of different places on the road, and they all tend to sort of mirror one another.”

Regardless of the kind of music you’re into in Australia, there’s clear camaraderie among people in the industry, no matter what genre they are playing.

“Anyone that’s playing anything slightly country in Australia is someone that I would consider my mate, we all end up playing the same festivals and stuff.

“We all end up having a really fun time together, but it spans across genres when we play shows, and people that are into punk music show up or that are in the punk bands show up.

“It’s a pretty good community of musicians; particularly within Melbourne there’s more people I’m familiar with, but we also have really good mates from Sydney that play different styles of music. It does kind of feel like one big family and everyone’s rooting for each other. We’re all just happy when people get opportunities.”

Festivals are in an interesting place at the moment. After a few years of no-shows, many festivals have moved away from the multi-day multi-genre model and moved towards single-day events showcasing single genres.

While those multi-days festivals still exist, it’s exciting to see a push towards local performers on smaller bills in smaller places.

“I like going to festivals where there’s a diverse array of music, but for these one-day events, I think it’s really fun to just have a theme and book all your favourite bands that play that sort of genre.

“It gives people a pretty good idea of the scene in Australia, which is always cool. I’ve done a few things that are cosmic country oriented just in the past few months, and it’s really fun because I’m mates with all the people that are playing.

“You look at the lineup, and you go, ‘Oh cool, this is great, I get to see all of the people that I’m usually playing on the same night as’.”

The Lightning & Rhinestones Festival will also feature music from Ben Mastwyk and his Millions, Georgia State Line, Katie Bates and Patrick Wilson.

“My bandmates play with pretty much all of the other acts,” Freya adds with a laugh. “So it’s going to be really fun because it’s people I’ve played a lot of shows with over the years, and people whose work I’m already familiar with, who might have new music out that I haven’t had a chance to see yet.

“It brings the community together, which I think is really nice, you rock up, you know everybody that’s on the bill, and it’s a really good hang.”

Lightning & Rhinestones

Headlining the inaugural event will be Australian cosmic country Queen Freya Josephine Hollick fresh from her cracking sets at Golden Plains, LoJo and Boogie this year and Melbourne cosmic-country-rocker Ben Mastwyk and His Millions, who promise to have the groovin’ to their country-soul glam with plenty of psych-guitar glitz.

Rounding out the lineup is ARIA nominee Georgia State Line, Melbourne Americana singer-songwriter Katie Bates evoking PJ Harvey with her heart and soul grit, and the multi-talented Patrick Wilson. Earlier in the day, festival-goers also have the opportunity to learn two-step dancing with beginner lessons run by Emma-Bee (from Americana Dance Academy) accompanied live by the Honky Tonkin’ No Sleep Til Texas.

If that wasn’t enough, punters can dust off their cowboy boots and dance to tunes spun by DJ Clip Clop between acts on the main stage.

‘Moving and mournful’: Fenn Wilson explores self-growth on new album ‘Honey Dates Death / Ghazals’

His first album, Ghost Heroin, was shrouded in roguish charm.

Not only did it distinguish the Melbourne-based songwriter as one with a penchant for gloomy gothic balladry and profoundly textured lyricism, but it also showcased a level of songwriting penmanship unparalleled by most artists in their mid 20’s, with many of Wilson’s narratives feeling hauntingly mature for an artist so fresh into adulthood.

Keep up with the latest music news, festivals, interviews and reviews here.

So naturally, his second release, Honey Dates Death / Ghazal, was never going to have a young man’s sound.

But while it’s an album that explores Wilson’s self-growth (or lack thereof) in the wake of his father’s passing, it draws a firm line from his sombre earlier works, adding an alt-rock edge through an explosion of horns, strings and pulsating percussive elements.

Dancing ties in hand percussion, masterful violin arrangements and powerfully strummed riffs alongside Wilson’s commanding vocal cadence; ‘Laying With Bones’ explores delicate harmonisations between electric and acoustic guitars; while ‘Fools Gold’ adds powerful horn-laden crescendos, contrasting against the song’s backdrop of doomed lust.

Of the album Fenn says, “Around the same time of hearing my father was ill, I met my now ex-partner and I couldn’t help but note the strange duplicity of having my father taken away while being given love in a new form. That duplicity was a major inspiration during the writing of Honey Dates Death / Ghazals and is chronicled particularly in the title tracks of the album as well as Fools Gold.

“Since that initial time my relationship with Dad’s passing has changed, as has the relationship with it for those closest around me, as we’re now learning to live lives that must be fulfilled in his absence.

“I hope this album gives the listener the space in which to grieve and find some comfort in knowing they aren’t alone; to lose from time to time is to live and whatever wounds or pain we may gather from those experiences get easier to tend to or occasionally heal all together. Writing and recording Honey Dates Death / Ghazals has given me comfort to no end and I feel a responsibility to potentially open that for others.”

The difference is palpable, with the bare bones of Wilson’s debut now fleshed out with lush rock balladry, full band bravado and gothic-country drawl.

And with Wilson’s gravelly vocal timbre and descriptive songwriting acting as each song’s pillar, it’s both moving and mournful, with Wilson navigating his way through social critiques, solemn confessions and stark realisations with equal levels of ease and unease.

As they say, drive-thru, leave happier.

Boasting quality coffee, good food, friendly faces and super fast service, Bean Squeeze was born from the distaste of having to find a car park in a crowded spot, then standing around in a packed coffee shop every day for a morning caffeine hit.

Since opening the first Bean Squeeze store on Mercer Street in March 2006, the team have been delivering an energy boost for the tired worker in peak hour traffic, daily morning caffeine hits, a quick break for those on a long journey, and a moment of serenity for the parent with the screaming child in the back.

This is the latest Bean Squeeze to open in the region, with one more store due to open in May or June at 771 Barwon Heads Rd, Armstrong Creek.

Bean Squeeze 166 Fyans St, South Geelong is open Monday-Friday from 5:30am to 5:30pm, Saturdays from 7am to 5pm, and Sundays from 8am to 3pm.

“It’s the first time that one of my major works has had a showing in the town that it was built. It’s just a really wonderful opportunity. I’d just like people to lose themselves for half an hour – get lost in my Kaleidoscope!”

Kaleidoscope isn’t Keith Courtney’s only piece with links to Geelong, with previous works The House of Mirrors and Inverted Crosses for Dark Mofo built here also.

Following Kaleidoscope’s stint in Geelong, the installation will travel to Bathurst in NSW, Queensland’s Gold Coast and Auckland in New Zealand.
