Magdalia is Melbourne’s rising star crafting ethereal indie folk-pop spells

Inspired by the likes of Lorde, Taylor Swift, and Florence and the Machine, Magdalia – the creative alter ego of Brodie O’Halloran – casts a modern-day spell with her music. Her songs weave introspective reflections, heartfelt storytelling, and dreamy melodies into a spellbinding tapestry that keeps listeners spellbound.

Originally from Melbourne’s south-eastern suburbs, Magdalia’s musical journey began at the tender age of eight, fuelled by a passion for singing instilled by her family.

Keep up with the latest music news, festivals, interviews and reviews here.

“I started singing when I was eight years old,” she recalls, “my mum wanted to learn to sing when she was younger and didn’t get the chance so she made sure I had the opportunity to get lessons.

“I discovered pretty quickly that I felt like I could be my true self when I was performing. I had never been able to express my emotions so freely before and it was life-changing to have something where I could do that.”

As she refined her skills over the years, her voice blossomed into a formidable instrument, drawing her towards the art of songwriting, using music as a means of expressing her innermost thoughts and feelings. Now a singing teacher at Creative Souls Studio, Magdalia’s music defies easy classification, blending elements from indie, alternative pop, and even musical theatre, creating a sound uniquely her own.

“Anything that has big vocals and poetic lyrics is right up my alley. I always try to write lyrics that connect with the audience and I find that these genres are great at doing that,” she says. “As a teacher I get introduced to all sorts of music and I think this plays a part in how I write too, even if I don’t really know it.”

Magdalia has already released several impressive originals, from the raw vulnerability of ‘Great Expectations’ to the haunting beauty of ‘Fault Lines’ and her latest single, ‘Hold It Up’, featuring Mayzie Chew, showcasing her evolving musical prowess.

Packed with evocative melodies and thought-provoking lyrics, much of Magdalia’s music draws from her own experiences, serving as a form of catharsis during difficult times. ‘The House On Stanley’, for instance, was penned after the loss of her aunt, offering a means of processing grief. Similarly, ‘Great Expectations’ was written following her autism diagnosis in 2021, helping her come to terms with her identity.

“I was very confused and overwhelmed with all this new information and not sure of where my place was in the world, so writing that song helped me come to terms with it and it’s now one of my favourites to perform.”

Exploring themes of love, loss, and the human experience with authenticity and depth, Magdalia hopes to offer solace and understanding to listeners, acknowledging the universal struggles and experiences we all share.

“My songs tend to deal with lots of universal experiences and feelings so I think on that level they are easy to connect with. If my songs can spark some sort of emotion in someone,” she says, “then I’m happy. That’s the way I’ve always approached music and performance.”

But it’s on stage where Magdalia truly shines, her emotive vocals and captivating presence leaving audiences spellbound. Like her inspiration, Florence Welch, Magdalia’s performances are simple yet mesmerising, as she pours her heart and soul into every song.

“I love that I can truly express myself. As an autistic woman sometimes I find self-expression difficult so having an outlet for that is so important,” she says. “When I perform live and when I make music I feel like I’m able to connect with people on a level I don’t usually get so it’s really special for me.”

With accolades like being the runner-up at the Festival of Sails emerging artist stage and performing at the Grand Final of the Listen Up Songwriting Prize in Sydney, Magdalia’s star is on the rise. Despite her success, she remains grounded in her passion for creating music that resonates with others.

With her first headline show in March and plans for an EP in the works, Magdalia shows no signs of slowing down. Her music promises to leave a lasting impression on all who hear it, offering a blend of introspection, emotion, and ethereal beauty.

For fans of Lorde’s introspective lyricism, Taylor Swift’s emotive storytelling, and Florence and the Machine’s dreamy melodies, Magdalia is a rising star to watch.

Maddie Jackway marries folk introspection with soulful pop on new single ‘You Make Me Look Over My Shoulder’

Geelong-based musician Maddie Jackway has just unveiled the latest musical creation upon the world with her newest release, ‘You Make Me Look Over My Shoulder’. The single, a tantalising glimpse into her forthcoming sophomore EP, Kindred, promises a blend of introspective folk narratives, infectious pop hooks, and vocals that soar with soulful resonance.

‘You Make Me Look Over My Shoulder’ encapsulates the essence of Jackway’s artistry. Clocking in at three minutes, this mid-tempo Pop-R&B-Soul track boasts haunting electronic elements and dissonant vocal harmonies, weaving a narrative of being ghosted by someone and the anticipation of their inevitable encounter.

The beautiful harmonies intertwine with flawless vocals, evoking comparisons to the likes of Yebba and Adele and drawing listeners into a world of raw emotion. There’s an undeniable allure to Jackway’s music too, an intrigue akin to the magnetic pull of Meg Mac’s melodies. Jackway’s evolution as an artist is evident in this track, as she explores new sonic territories while retaining her signature authenticity and earnestness.

Keep up with the latest music news, festivals, interviews and reviews here.

Behind the scenes, a team of talented musicians and producers lent their expertise to bring Jackway’s vision to life. Co-produced by Naarm/Melbourne keyboardist and producer Jake Amy, with contributions from Patrick-Earl Danao on drums, Robyn Poppins on percussion, Pia Nesvara on viola, and Juliet Steel on violin, ‘You Make Me Look Over My Shoulder’ is a testament to collaborative creativity. Bailey Judd handled the mixing, while Panorama Mixing & Mastering ensured the track reached its full sonic potential during mastering.

But Jackway’s musical journey doesn’t stop with a single song. On April 5, 2024, she will unveil her sophomore EP, Kindred, a collection of five songs that showcase her genre-defying approach to music. Recorded at Kindred Studios during Jackway’s tenure as Victoria University’s Music Artist in Residence, the EP promises to explore the complexities of the human experience through a blend of pop, soul, and folk influences.

Reflecting on her evolution as an artist, Jackway shares, “I’ve always said that I won’t be boxed into one genre, and this EP really shows that. You can hear all of my different influences as a writer and musician.”

Since bursting onto the scene with her debut EP, What Is This Freedom?, in 2020, Jackway has been steadily carving out her place in the music industry. Opening for renowned acts like Alex Lahey and The Smith Street Band on The Push All Ages Tour and gracing the stage at esteemed festivals such as the Port Fairy Folk Festival, she has proven herself to be a rising star with staying power.

As Jackway prepares to unleash her latest musical offering upon the world, listeners can expect to be captivated by her emotive vocals, irresistible melodies, and heartfelt storytelling.

With ‘You Make Me Look Over My Shoulder’ serving as a promising note of what’s to come, Maddie Jackway is poised to make an indelible mark on the music industry with her sophomore EP, Kindred.

Now open: Rebecchi’s is where café culture meets vinyl vibes in Newtown

Formerly operating as ‘Neighbour’ five years ago, the owners have returned to the space with Rebecchi’s, bringing their expertise and a fresh perspective to the table.

But here’s the twist, Rebecchi’s isn’t just your ordinary café—it also doubles as a record store. Owner Sam launched ‘Bad Neighbour Records’ three years ago during lockdowns and his studies. What began as an online venture and occasional pop-up shop evolved into a residency at one of the gallery’s newer locations, before eventually relocating to this new space. Sam decided to merge the record store with the café, giving birth to Rebecchi’s.

Inspired by the vibrant spirit of New York City’s bodegas nestled in its various neighbourhoods, Rebecchi’s offers a menu that echoes the New York culinary ethos. From sandwiches to salads and expertly brewed coffee, the team has curated an experience that pays homage to the bustling energy of the Big Apple.

As they settle into their new space, Rebecchi’s is expanding its offerings to include breakfast options and a robust filter coffee programme alongside retail coffee sales. Yet, their primary focus remains on fostering genuine connections with their customers, embodying the ethos of community and hospitality. It’s all about filling each other’s cups, physically and metaphorically.

Among their popular offerings is the “Italian Sub,” featuring a medley of rotating cold cut meats sourced from Melbourne’s Bill’s Farm, Provolone Cheese, Pickled Peppers, and Rocket, all drizzled with a delectable Italian deli-style vinaigrette, served in a long white roll (hoagie style). Owner Sam recommends the classic Caesar Salad, a dish he believes deserves a revival with its blend of Cos Leaves, Croutons, Bacon, Anchovy and Parmesan dressing, topped with a slow-cooked egg. It’s the perfect balance of richness and freshness with lots of crunch.

A hidden gem on the menu is the “Chicken Salad Sandwich,” reminiscent of the 1950s “Coronation Chicken,” comprising chicken, roasted almonds, sultanas, herbs, mayonnaise, and curry powder, served between butter lettuce leaves and white bread—a daily delight for many patrons.

Rebecchi’s proudly serves Ona coffee from Canberra and has recently introduced guest roasters, starting with locals Constant Coffee, with plans to expand their selection further. Complementing their menu is a range of fresh produce sourced from Joel, son of one of the gallery owners, who runs a commercial farm, providing fresh vegetables and herbs weekly. Additionally, Rebecchis sources pastrami from Bird Rock in Ceres and eggs from Chooks at the Rooke, ensuring quality ingredients in every dish.

Beyond the café experience, Rebecchi’s also offers a selection of records through Bad Neighbour Records. Plans are underway to launch a subscription service/membership, and customers are encouraged to request specific items, with the team more than happy to source them.

Come and experience the fusion of great food, excellent coffee, and eclectic music at Rebecchi’s—a true hub for the Newtown community.

Collaboration, Community, and Conversations: How Platform Arts Leads Arts Experiences

Strength to strength, the not-for-profit arts organisation has been raising the profile of experimental and contemporary art in the Geelong region through community collaboration, engaging in wider dialogue on issues that matter, building meaningful connections with sector leaders, and presenting powerful, thought-provoking works.

Executive Director Ilana Russell explains, “It has been a delight to grow the reach of Platform Arts programming and program partners. In the last couple of years, we’ve partnered with universities, international arts festivals, government bodies and experimental theatre companies to deliver exciting works to the region that challenge the way that we, as audiences, think.”

Stay up to date with what’s happening within the region’s art scene here

“I was waterbombed in a shopping trolley as part of a performance work that challenged assumptions about youth. The Director turned the burning of Weetbix onstage into a conversation about the comparably delicate practices of the arts industry and the death industry. We’re building a program where art leads and comments on complex constructs.”

To help bring all of these pieces of the Platform puzzle together, the organisation has introduced thematics into their programming, blanketing their gallery, performance and public program under an overarching theme. Anchored by the considered curation of a major exhibition and supported by performances, talks, public events and publications, Platform’s 2024 program will respond to issues and conversations that are urgent in our current societal climate.

“It’s incredibly exciting to create arts experiences that connect and unravel over time, where audiences are invited to gather and respond to each subsequent event within that theme. The arts are as much about providing alternative conceptual means to process—together—our changing world,” Russell says.

A post shared by PLATFORM ARTS (@platformartsgeelong)

This strategic choice enables Platform to align with Geelong’s expectations of contemporary art experiences. From engaging with higher calibre artists to bringing world-class works to their stage and gallery walls, Platform Arts is focused on elevating its artistic offering.

“Under this new model, we have opened our outreach to engage an amazing cohort of artists, researchers and disrupters to respond to vital environmental and social issues. Our current exhibition alone engages fifteen artists such as national changemakers Georgia Nowak, James Geurts, and Jazz Money, whose work all responds in some capacity to a shared vision and concept,” says Russell.

The arts organisation is currently in the depths of an H2O deep dive called CURRENTS, an exhibition exploring the human relationship with water. The exhibition component sees the intersection of artists across disciplines contemplating tides, migration, ecosystems, climate change, saturation, sustenance and hydration. On the public program front, Platform Arts has partnered with Barwon Water to deliver off-site events including a water cycle meditation and a guided walk at Upper Stony Creek Reservoir.

“The uniqueness of the CURRENTS exhibition and the cross-section of artists involved has opened up the exploration of art practice across different mediums and industries. Scientists, researchers and artists have become intrinsically interconnected throughout this process and we have connected with spaces outside of our building.”

Their second theme, fairy, is set to kick off on Saturday 6 April, running until Friday 17 May. The project will explore ‘fairies’ and queer presences, engaging 13 artists to think through and creatively respond to the possibilities and limitations of “thinking of queerness as a fairy.”

As supported by the Midsumma Regional Activation Fund, fairy sees collaboration with the LGBTQIA+ community of Geelong. For the opening event, catering will be provided by cheese train aficionados, Splatters. In a first for the organisation, following the recent removal of its dry zone designation, Platform Arts will also include the service of alcohol, partnering with local regional allies, Great Ocean Road Gin.

Additionally, fairy strengthens the organisation’s relationship with Geelong Pride Film Festival. The festival program will launch at Platform Arts on Thursday 28 March, followed by screenings and Q&A’s in their theatre on Saturday 20 April. Features include the story of an 87-year-old carriage-diving legend in Isla’s Way as well as AFLW documentary, Equal the Contest. The festival also boasts the Australian premiere of Masquerades of Research I and II by Irish-based artist Padraig Robinson.

“We’re excited to partner with Geelong Pride Film Festival to share the important stories from the community and further contribute to the LGBTQIA+ conversation. We’re thrilled to build on our longstanding relationship with the festival by becoming a more significant program supporter each year.”

Located at the entrance of the city’s cultural precinct, Platform Arts is open for free visitations from 9AM – 5PM weekdays and Saturdays from 10AM – 3PM during exhibition periods.

Surfrider Foundation is hosting a Paddle Out in Torquay to rally against seismic blasting

Surfrider Foundation Australia, a not-for-profit charity dedicated to safeguarding Australia’s oceans, is gearing up for its first public paddle out event of 2024. The event aims to galvanise community support against the world’s largest proposed seismic blasting permit, threatening Australia’s southern coastline with fossil fuel exploration.

Scheduled for 23rd March at Cosy Corner Beach in Torquay, the paddle out invites everyone to unite in opposition to the seismic blasting, which is the initial step in offshore oil and gas drilling. The proposed seismic blasting would involve releasing blasts into the ocean every 10 seconds, 24 hours a day, for up to 400 days, with underwater blasts reaching ear-splitting levels of up to 250 decibels.

To get involved, all you need to do is sign up, bring your board of choice, your signs and your voice.

Paddle Out

  • Event Location: Cosy Corner Beach, Torquay, Victoria
  • Event Time: 11:30 am (into the water at midday), 23rd March
  • What to Bring: Sunscreen, hat, appropriate swimwear, water, signs/banners, and your preferred board
  • Parking Recommendations: Esplanade Carpark near Point Danger
  • Register: Sign up to participate here.

Blasts displace, injure and kill marine life, with research showing harm to zooplankton, dolphins and whales. The practice can decimate fisheries, which has devastating flow-on effects for local economies and communities that rely on the fishing industry.

Once an area has been blasted, the next step is drilling and extraction of gas. Additional emissions originating from new gas fields will worsen climate change and its impacts.

Marine Scientist and Surfrider National Campaign Manager, Annie Ford, underscores the detrimental impacts of seismic blasting on marine ecosystems. “The impacts seismic blasting can have on marine ecosystems are unacceptable, with research showing seismic blasting causes habitat abandonment, mating and feeding disruption, and impacts the ability of marine animals to communicate,” Ford explains, highlighting the urgent need to halt this destructive practice.

“The only voices arguing seismic blasting doesn’t negatively impact the environment are all coincidently part of the fossil fuel industry that profits from the practice.”

A post shared by Surfrider Foundation Australia (@surfrideraus)

Surfrider Campaign Director Drew McPherson emphasises the necessity for continuous action and community engagement to combat seismic blasting. “Seismic blasting is destructive on so many levels,” says McPherson. “We need to transition away from it. It’s not worth the risk.”

The event follows Surfrider Australia’s successful opposition to the development of the Great Australian Bight as a deep-water oil field in 2019. Darren Noyes-Brown, Secretary of Surfrider Surf Coast branch, echoes the sentiment, stating, “The community has everything to lose and nothing to gain if this project goes ahead.”

Surfrider Foundation, in partnership with Ben & Jerry’s, will also be hosting a screening of the film Southern Blast at The Astor Theatre in St Kilda, featuring free ice cream and live music. The film, directed by Matty Hannon and starring Australian free-surfer Torren Martyn, sheds light on the perils of seismic blasting.

Surfrider and Ben & Jerry’s are advocating for the revocation of the blasting permit, aiming to mitigate risks of oil spills, ocean fires, and widespread pollution. Australians concerned about the impact of seismic activity on the coastline and environment can engage with their local MPs using Ben & Jerry’s letter writing tool.

Amidst growing concerns for environmental preservation, Surfrider’s paddle out event stands as a resolute call to action, urging communities to safeguard Australia’s precious marine ecosystems against the perils of fossil fuel exploration.

Renowned French designer Pierre Yovanovitch has unveiled an enchanting immersive installation, featuring a curated selection of Pierre Yovanovitch Mobilier pieces at Criteria gallery. This marks the esteemed designer’s inaugural showcase in Australia, introducing his unique furniture designs to the Australian market for the first time.

In a nod to Yovanovitch’s interior architecture practice, Criteria gallery presents a carefully curated selection of contemporary artworks alongside the new furniture pieces. Yovanovitch has ingeniously arranged the pieces in a series of immersive vignettes, allowing visitors to experience the furniture within a residential context. Rachael Fry, founder and creative director of Criteria, expressed her excitement about representing Yovanovitch’s work in Australia, highlighting his visionary approach to design. Fry commented, “Pierre Yovanovitch is a rare creative visionary whose avant-garde concepts reflect a deep understanding of colour, composition, space, and texture. We are honoured to be representing his work in Australia and thrilled to pioneer the introduction of his visionary design to our audience.”

True to Yovanovitch’s design philosophy, all Pierre Yovanovitch Mobilier pieces are crafted with longevity and exceptional quality in mind. Collaborating with craftsmen to source superior materials, the pieces are locally certified and sustainably sourced wherever possible, ensuring durability and timeless design. The studio pays homage to Yovanovitch’s Provencal roots, drawing inspiration from the region’s natural light, rich natural materials, and vibrant colour palettes, as well as its historic commitment to craftsmanship.

Highlights of the showcase include the Wave Console, a uniquely sculptural piece crafted from oiled solid oak; the Callas Table Lamp, a new addition to the Pierre Yovanovitch Mobilier catalogue made of solid ash and fabric; and the Roze Dining Table, crafted from varnished solid oak with a glazed ceramic insert and lacquered steel legs. Other notable pieces include the Mr. Oops Chair, the Mama Bear Chair, the Honeymoon Sconce, the Asymmetry Armchair, and the Flare Floor Lamp.

The installation also features a selection of artworks curated by Yovanovitch, showcasing pieces by Jules de Balincourt, Travis McDonald, Miranda Skoczek, and Ben Mazey.

Reflecting on the collaboration with Criteria for his Australian debut, Yovanovitch stated, ““I can’t think of a better platform than CRITERIA to collaborate with for my debut in Australia. We’ve known for some time that there has been an interest in Pierre Yovanovitch Mobilier in the region, so it was just a matter of finding the right partner to debut our works there. Rachael’s keen eye for design and established presence in the industry made a collaboration with CRITERIA a natural launching pad for us.”

The collection will be on display until May 2, 2024, from Monday to Friday, 10 am to 5 pm, and Saturdays from 10 am to 1 pm. For more information, visit: https://criteriacollection.com.au/
