The festival, slated across two vibrant days, serves as a homage to the humble potato, a staple of the region’s rich red volcanic soil. Drawing locals and visitors alike, the event promises a delightful array of festivities, including local produce showcases, artisanal displays, live music, and culinary delights.

Festival coordinator Kye Theobald expresses enthusiasm for this year’s iteration, declaring it to be “bigger and better than ever before.” Emphasising the festival’s commitment to community engagement, Theobald highlights the event’s expansion to a two-day affair, made possible through generous sponsorships.

Day one of the festivities, set to enliven Trentham’s streets, features a traditional carnival atmosphere. Four bustling precincts will offer an assortment of spud-centric delicacies, fresh produce stalls, and entertainment for all ages. History buffs can partake in a guided tour of the town’s heritage-protected Spud Huts, led by the Trentham Historical Society.

As dusk descends, the festival transitions into the inaugural Spudfest Cèilidh, a celebration of Celtic culture featuring music, food, and dance. Hosted at The Factory on Market Street, the event promises a memorable evening for attendees.

Day two invites visitors to delve deeper into the region’s gastronomic offerings. The Spudfeast beckons with a progressive dining experience, showcasing spud-infused dishes at various venues across Trentham and its surrounds. Additionally, guided farm tours offer insight into local agricultural practices, with highlights including organic flower farms, heritage-breed livestock, and family-run garlic plantations.

Those inclined towards exploration can embark on the self-guided Farm Gate Trail, uncovering hidden culinary gems and participating in engaging activities such as The Great Spud Scavenger Hunt and historical tours.

Strapped for Cash? Save big on tickets for year-round events

But attending these events can often come with a hefty price tag.

Fortunately, we’ve got some savvy strategies to help you secure cheaper tickets and make the most of your event experience without breaking the bank.

Keep up with the latest music news, festivals, interviews and reviews here.

Concerts:

Avoid ticket resale sites: Resale platforms like Viagogo and StubHub often inflate ticket prices with additional fees. Stay ahead by purchasing tickets directly from authorised sellers to dodge inflated costs and avoid potential scams.

Sign up for artist mailing lists: Gain access to exclusive pre-sales by joining the mailing lists of your favourite bands and artists. This grants you priority access to tickets before they’re available to the general public, reducing the risk of missing out or resorting to resale sites.

Opt for midweek gigs: If a concert offers multiple dates, consider attending midweek shows. These tend to have less demand than weekend gigs, making it easier to secure seats at lower prices.

Festivals:

Group bookings: Some festivals offer discounted rates for group bookings, making it more economical to attend with friends or family.

Use payment plans: Many festivals offer payment plans, allowing you to spread the cost of your ticket over several monthly instalments for easier budgeting. We love Afterpay!

Consider volunteering: Explore volunteering opportunities at festivals for free access in exchange for a few shifts over the weekend—a cost-effective way to experience the event and make new connections.

Bring your own food: Save on food expenses by bringing your own snacks and meals to festivals, where permitted of course.

Check alcohol allowances: Research festival policies regarding alcohol consumption to make the most of any allowances, saving on pricey onsite bar purchases.

Pack your own chargers: Avoid costly phone charging fees by bringing your own portable charger to festivals.

Sporting Events:

Opt for less desirable seats: For major sporting events, consider choosing seats with less demand to secure cheaper tickets. Usually there will be screens around so you’ll still be able to see what’s going on! This one also applies to concerts too… Taylor Swift’s restricted seats looks pretty damn good!

Attend away games: Away game tickets for football teams are often priced lower than home games, providing a more affordable option for fans.

Explore coach deals: Look for coach deals offered by football clubs for away games, often at discounted rates compared to train travel.

Book transport early: Secure your transport arrangements as soon as fixtures are announced to lock in lower prices before demand drives costs up.

Theatre:

Choose higher seats: Save on theatre tickets by opting for seats higher up in the auditorium—ideal for those unbothered by heights.

Seek last-minute deals: Keep an eye out for last-minute ticket deals on agent websites, as theatres may offer discounted seats to ensure a full audience.

Compare ticket prices: Compare prices across official show websites, venue platforms, and ticket sale sites to find the best deal before purchasing.

Group bookings: Take advantage of group booking discounts offered by major theatres for groups of 10 or more.

Be flexible with dates: Save on theatre tickets by opting for midweek or matinee performances, often priced lower than weekend evening shows.

Stand-Up Comedy:

Attend free events: Discover free comedy nights in city centres for budget-friendly entertainment, using web platforms or guides to find local events.

Catch comedians testing new material: Keep an eye on local comedy clubs where big-name comedians often test new material at reduced costs.

Explore Blue Light Tickets: Emergency services personnel may access discounted tickets to large-scale comedy shows, offering savings on entertainment expenses.

To achieve this ambitious showcase, THE LUME Melbourne’s team forged close connections with key Italian and French artisans, historians, and curators. The exhibition unfolds across a colossal 3,000 sqm multisensory gallery, guiding visitors through the streets of Florence, the canals of Venice, the history of Rome, the grandeur of Milan, and ending in Amboise, France, mirroring Leonardo’s journey.

Visitors will uncover 25 secrets hidden beneath the surface, as revealed by Cotte’s state-of-the-art technology and expertise. Battlesnake are bringing their 70’s inspired heaviness to Ballarat in April

With influences reminiscent of the greats like Dio, Maiden, and Saxon, Battlesnake is ready to take their audience on a ride through the realms of heavy metal nostalgia.

Their latest track, “Motorsteeple,” features classic twin guitar harmonies, ethereal choruses akin to Ghost, and the bone-crushing riffage reminiscent of Black Sabbath. Described by the band as a “colossal church that hath no breaks, bound to the road eternally,” “Motorsteeple” promises to be a headbanger’s delight.

But Battlesnake isn’t stopping there. They’ve announced a massive eight-date tour across the UK and Europe for May, following select shows on their “Help Us Get To Europe Tour.” And nestled among these performances is a stop in Ballarat, promising the city a taste of pure heavy metal energy.

Keep up with the latest music news, festivals, interviews and reviews here.

Before they embark on their European adventure, Battlesnake will be gracing the stage at Volta in Ballarat on Saturday, April 6th. It’s a chance for fans to witness the thunderous sound and electrifying stage presence that have catapulted Battlesnake from small dive bars to sharing the stage with legends like KISS and The Smashing Pumpkins.

But how did Battlesnake rise to such dizzying heights? The band’s journey is one of relentless determination and undeniable talent. From humble beginnings in Sydney’s underground music scene to wowing audiences nationwide, Battlesnake has carved a path uniquely their own.

With influences ranging from Queen to Tenacious D, Battlesnake is a force to be reckoned with, blending elements of classic rock and metal into a sound that’s unmistakably theirs. And with industry heavyweights like Lemon Tree Music and Lonely Lands Agency backing them, there’s no telling how far Battlesnake’s ascent will take them.

As they gear up to conquer the stages of Europe and beyond, one thing is clear: Battlesnake is a band on the rise, ready to leave an indelible mark on the world of heavy metal.

The Whitlams Black Stump Duo announces a run of Piano Bar performances in May

Australian music sensation Tim Freedman, best known as the frontman of The Whitlams, is set to captivate audiences with his latest venture, the debut album ‘Kookaburra’ under The Whitlams Black Stump.

As part of their tour across Australia, Freedman is gearing up for an unforgettable series of performances at Piano Bars throughout May with the Black Stump Duo – Tim Freedman and Ollie Thorpe’s acclaimed piano and pedal steel duo.

The Whitlams Black Stump Piano Bar Performances:

  • Tue 7 May: Bendigo, VIC
  • Wed 8 May: Ballarat, VIC
  • Thu 9 May: Geelong, VIC

Keep up with the latest music news, festivals, interviews and reviews here.

The album, a blend of country-inspired melodies and poignant storytelling, has already garnered critical acclaim, marking a new chapter in Freedman’s illustrious career.

Freedman’s narrative prowess shines through in tracks like ‘Fallen Leaves’, a collaboration with multi award-winning musicians Matt Fell and Rod McCormack, which has been lauded by Country Music Capital News as “exquisite”. The album weaves together tales of Australian life, from Ned Kelly’s sister to local pub encounters, resonating with audiences across the country.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by The Whitlams (@thewhitlams.official)

Reflecting on his creative journey, Freedman shares, “I am a parochial lyric writer, and country music has a strong sense of time and place, so clothing my stories in a country music coat seemed like a natural progression to me. I had to scratch that itch and investigate.”

The album, recorded over four “feverish” days in the studio, features an eclectic mix of classic Whitlams tracks alongside deep cuts and covers, including nods to Australian songwriters Bernie Hayes and Perry Keyes. The collaboration with Fell and McCormack, alongside a talented ensemble of musicians, infuses the album with authenticity and depth.

“One important technical aspect of the album is that when I am redoing a Whitlams song they are now sung in a lower register than they used to be. As you get older your voice lowers, and it’s more natural to be able to convey them now in an age-appropriate key. I can unleash the crooner within!” laughs Tim.

To celebrate the album’s release, The Whitlams Black Stump are embarking on an extensive tour across Australia, bringing their unique blend of storytelling and musical craftsmanship to audiences nationwide. From intimate venues to iconic theatres, the tour promises an unforgettable live experience for fans old and new.

Tickets for The Whitlams Black Stump Piano Bar performances are available now and can be purchased at https://thewhitlams.com/tour/.

Karroong Kanyool: A new beacon for Youth Empowerment has been unveiled in Norlane

A momentous occasion unfolded last week as the Wathaurong Aboriginal Co-operative (Wathaurong) Community gathered to inaugurate the new Healing Spirit Youth Hub, christened Karroong Kanyool, meaning “Home of the Young” in Wathaurong language.

Located on Forster Street in Norlane, this revitalised space marks a significant milestone in the community’s journey towards empowering its youth.

A post shared by Wathaurong Aboriginal Co-Op (@wathaurong)

Originally established in 1984, Forster Street served as one of Wathaurong’s earliest homes before the organisation relocated to its current community hub on Morgan Street, North Geelong, in 1996. However, thanks to a generous $1.6 million grant from the Aboriginal Community Infrastructure Program in 2022, coupled with support from the Victorian Health Building Authority, Wathaurong seized the opportunity to reimagine Forster Street as a sanctuary for young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander individuals in the region.

Designed in collaboration with the youth of the community, Karroong Kanyool boasts a range of facilities tailored to support the holistic wellbeing of its young visitors. From dedicated consulting suites for accessing health and wellbeing specialists to a sensory space, access to technology, and a vibrant outdoor basketball half-court adorned in the colours of the Aboriginal flag, the hub caters to diverse needs and interests.

The outdoor area further features spaces for men’s and women’s gatherings, centred around a communal firepit for yarning circles. A deck seamlessly connects the indoor function space, facilitating indoor/outdoor activities and fostering a sense of community cohesion.

The launch event was a poignant affair, with community members reminiscing about raising their children at Forster Street in the 80s and 90s. Simon Flagg, CEO of Wathaurong, articulated the Board’s vision for the next generation to embrace Forster Street as their own.

“Wathaurong has listened to our young people, and we are thrilled to finally deliver on a space that has been developed by and for our young mob,” said Mr. Flagg. “Our youth are our future, our Elders of tomorrow, and we want them to grow and become our leaders through the programs and supports we offer here.”

A symbolic moment ensued as the Aboriginal flag was ceremonially raised by Jordan Edwards, Lachlan Edwards, and Shantelle Baillie, who spearheaded the initial youth consultation process in 2020, contributing to the vision of the youth hub.

Karroong Kanyool is set to commence its programs in Term 2, with further details available on www.wathaurong.org.au.

‘Love Prank’: CLEWS stripped-back EP signals a stunning departure from their signature sound

If you’re familiar with Sydney-based indie-rockers CLEWS, you’d most likely be expecting their newest EP to offer up more of the distorted boygenius-infused rock stylings that the group have cut their teeth on.

Instead, Love Prank sees Lily and Grace Richardson offer up a complete change of pace, both figuratively and literally.

Keep up with the latest music news, festivals, interviews and reviews here.

On Love Prank, the upstarts strip back the layers of fuzzy distortion to deliver a heartfelt and reflective release that completely refines their sound. As recently stated by the duo, “We took a totally different approach in the studio with this EP and decided to let the songs be unobscured by heavy guitars and production. Going softer and more stripped back on these tracks seemed a little scary at first, because we’ve always positioned CLEWS as a rock band. But what the fuck is the point of writing vulnerable songs if we forever hide them behind distortion?”

The results are timeless. Not only does the stripped-back nature allow for the sisters’ songwriting to take centre stage, but it fully showcases the power, depth and uniqueness of each sister’s vocals.

‘If Only If’ blends timeless guitar arrangements alongside unison vocal harmonies to channel early Fleetwood Mac and The Roaches folk balladry. ‘Can’t Be Real’ toys with subtleties to gradually build immersive and atmospheric soundscapes, while ‘Step Up 2 Me’ delivers slow power-rock balladry alongside 90s Alanis Morissette edge.

Love Prank could honestly be called ‘No Clews’ because it is the furthest thing from what you’d be expecting based on the group’s previous sound, but yet, it’s a welcomed change that further highlights the Richardson sisters as unique, insightful and acute songwriters.

You’ll be able to catch CLEWS live at Here Comes The Sun festival in Torquay on Saturday 30 March.
