What’s On Ballarat?

Still sweltering up here from a long hot summer in the Rat, local folk are looking for ways to clench their thirst and yours truly may have found a watering hole just out of town worth dropping in to. Hudson`s Hotel is as homely and welcoming as a local pub could possibly get situated in the main street of Ballan.

I met some buddies there recently for parmi night, which is on a Wednesday night, and I was chuffed with the place to say the least. You can get an old school parmi and a pot for around $20. And I mean old school. Scalloped potatoes are to die for and Hudson`s also have live music, open mic and a karaoke night for those game enough. Check out their Facebook page for more info.

Russell Morris is still playing his blues and roots music all over Oz and he has pumped out two albums over the last five years. Don`t miss him when he plays at Suttons House Of Music on Friday the 18th of March. This man has done his time as a musician and to still be playing regularly is a real credit to him.

Singer/songwriter Jessey Jackson is playing his sweet tunes at Babushka on Saturday March 26 and this will be a fabulous venue to see Jessey. It`s only five bucks to get in, which is a bargain, so get down and support the lad from Anglesea who has been working hard playing around Victoria over the summer.

Mesa Cosa are getting around the traps of late coming all the way from Mexico to Karova Lounge on April 1. They describe themselves as a freak out ya ya gang from Mexico! Right on! The following night Frenzal Rhomb will play Karova and these guys have been at it as long as I can remember. Their punk rock sound still obviously has a pulse and this sounds like a great weekend of music at Karova.

Seeing it`s International Women`s Day as I pen this, there’s a lovely place at 811 Sturt Street to take the cherubs, have a coffee and perhaps purchase a small gift – you can even buy perfume. The coffee here is excellent also and the staff are really friendly. Fresh smoked salmon sushi was on the menu the day I wandered in. Give this place a try.
