Wolf and Willow

Melbourne folk/indie duo Wolf and Willow (long-time friends James and Tim) kicked off their music career last year by throwing their very first gig in a backyard. We chat to vocalist and guitarist Tim Richardson about what they’ve been up to since then.

You’re launching your single ‘Seaside’ in Geelong this month. What do you want from the audience?
Firstly, we’d love the audience to take a punt and come on down. We are preparing a special show that will best encapsulate our upcoming EP.

Last month you announced the release of your debut studio EP ‘Born to Be’. What can we expect from the EP?
I think the EP is going to be a really good reflection of who we are as musicians and the collaboration that is Wolf and Willow. There will be some moments to get lost in, some storytelling, and there be times for buoyant sing-alongs. We want the EP to be a personal reflection of this part of our lives, so when we are a bit older we can look back and reminisce on some of the laughs and trials we face as 20-year-olds.

You guys turned an old church into a makeshift studio. How did that all come about?
Turning the church into a makeshift studio was such a uniquely fun experience. We were able to use the room to get a lot of big sounds which you’ll be able to hear throughout the album. We are great friends with our sound engineer. It was just hanging out with your best mates in a church making music – exactly the foundation we were looking for to build this EP.

Being relatively new to the Melbourne music scene, you’ve had a massive year with debut releases, the ‘Chase the Sun’ video and recording your EP. Any plans after the EP?
We’ll most likely let the EP do its thing. We are in the stages of planning a trip up the east coast. Once winter approaches next year, I would love to take off to Europe with a guitar for a few months. Play some songs and make some new friends in some foreign places.

Your EP artwork and band name is pretty interesting with a real folk vibe, is there a story behind it?
We wanted to mirror the sound of our music with the artwork itself; to capture the sense of adventure that our music is inspired by as well as the organic sounds that we love. Maybe it’s our inner emerging country kid, trying to escape.

Thanks heaps for your time. Any words of wisdom for our readers?
Bake ’em away toys.

Their single ‘Seaside’ will be released September 19 exclusively on Triple J Unearthed.
