Elvis, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, Roy Orbison, Rufus Thomas Junior, and Howlin’ Wolf… beyond being legends, these names all had one thing in common: They all launched their careers at the famous Sun Record Company in Memphis, discovered by the great Sam Phillips.
This April, music lovers are promised an unforgettable evening as the story of Sam Phillips’ legendary Sun Studio is brought to life through the songs that transformed the studio into a touch-stone for all who love and appreciate the roots of rock n’ roll – and for the musicians who got their first break in the fickle world of music.

In the critically-acclaimed ‘Sun Rising: The Songs That Made Memphis’, Melbourne musicians and songwriters Damon Smith and Dave Cosma have crafted a show that will have you feeling as though you are at the iconic studio as they tell the remarkable story of the Memphis studio that would go on to transform rock n’ roll and the many musicians who are bywords for this enduring musical style.
It should be noted, this is no Vegas-style nightly tribute show by burnt-out fans. This is a show packed full of energy and passion, with a setlist that is out of this world, hilarious on-stage banter and extremely educational for those who even feel like they know so much about early rock and roll.
Of course there have been tribute shows in the past in honour of Sam Phillips and the Sun glory era, but what sets ‘Sun Rising: The Songs That Made Memphis’ apart is authenticity. You’ll hear no Roy Orbison’s Pretty Woman here- no, no. You’ll hear his first recording (not necessarily his best work) Ooby Dooby. You won’t hear Elvis’ A Little Less Conversation; you’ll hear his first track, That’s Alright Mama. You won’t hear Hound Dog, you’ll hear Rufus Thomas Jnr’s Bear Cat; a track so similar it would cost Phillips thousands of dollars and more tragically, Elvis’ recording contract to cover the costs of the copyright lawsuit.
Hailed as ‘the best night ever’, this show is not to be missed so break out the Brylcreem and whack on the dancing shoes.
