White Night unveils magical program for its first-ever Shepparton event this month

For the first time ever, White Night will light up Shepparton this winter - and the program is better than expected!

As White Night looks to claim Victorian cities in a visual arts takeover this year,

Following the news that the overnight art party that is White Night will be making its colourful debut in Shepparton this year, the famous free art festival have drummed up even more excitement by releasing the program that will be transforming the city streets, parklands, laneways, public spaces and cultural institutions this June.

This visual feast and cultural event will descend on Shepparton on Saturday, June 25 from 6pm to 12am, attracting thousands of locals and visitors to the city and supporting local tourism and hospitality businesses.

The program will feature the best of the best from previous regional White Night events alongside new elements that showcase the region’s landscape, culture, and history. White Night will transform Shepparton through illuminations, projections, music and interactive works from talented local and national artists.

Highlights from the freshly-announced program include a light sculpture installation ‘Shadows’ which shares family stories and connection to the Yorta Yorta nation using light to create shadows that expand and contract reflecting pools of water through the seasons; Lotus by Felipe Reynolds which sees Lake Victoria transformed into a giant illuminated Lotus garden where flowers will gently float, their reflections dancing upon the water and changing colour within the night; and ‘Crepuscular Beam’. Sending a beam of ever morphing light far into the night sky, the crepuscular beam’s light reaches for kilometers into the dark night sky, accompanied by an emotive soundtrack built from sounds recorded by the NASA Voyager mission.

Elsewhere in the program is the magical projection of Fungy Fungi which grows right in front of your eyes; ‘The Nuts’ which are a lovable series of giant, charismatic, inflatable gumnuts; and ‘The March’ by Five Angry Men. This moving installation is a repeated choreographic sequence consisting of four universal items of human forward motion: running, walking, crawling, and dragging. Accompanied by a lone drummer, the performers relentlessly continue their task, rising and falling as the pattern repeats.

Geelong’s own Lowell Hunter also features on the program whose brilliant art will be exhibited on the south side of Shepparton Art Museum on Yorta Yorta Country; the enormous cascading bubble sculpture ‘Bouquet Final’ which was shown as part of the first White Night Melbourne in 2013; as well as a quadraphonic audio-visual experience where the Shepparton Skate Bowl will vibrantly be brought to life by Kate Berry and local artist Rachel Doller, where the beats, bass and boom will have you dancing to the likes of Juno Mamba, Quivers and Ausecuma Beats and many more. Plus heaps more.

Coined a joyful, democratic take-over of the night, the arrival White Night is a major coup for the city, with a crowd of up to 30,000 expected to attend White Night Shepparton providing a huge boost to local tourism, hospitality, accommodation, and retail businesses.

The Shepparton event will be the first White Night celebration for the year with White Night Bendigo taking place on 3 September and White Night Geelong on 8 October. Since the first White Night in Melbourne in 2013, the event has built a strong reputation as a vibrant and inclusive celebration of immersive art and community participation.
