‘We set out with high hopes in 2023’: By The Pier cancels its March event in Queenscliff

Following its inaugural event back in March this year, By The Pier has been cancelled for 2023.

Queenscliff’s newest music festival has cancelled its forthcoming 2023 event.

Due to take place on March 24 and 25, By The Pier – an offshoot of the ever-popular Queenscliff Music Festival, happening earlier in November – was gearing up to offer an eclectic mix of some of Australia’s favourite musical acts, including the likes of Thelma Plum, SAFIA, Holy Holy, King Stingray, Slowly Slowly, Alice Ivy, and Big Twisty & The Funk Nasty.

Offering a more intimate and laid-back experience than its elder sister Queenscliff Music Festival, By The Pier was due to return with a single outdoor stage giving punters the chance to pick their spot in the grass and kick back under the sun, enjoying a vibrant three days of sensational sounds at a picture-perfect beachside venue.

“Sadly we have cancelled the 2023 edition of BY THE PIER with ticket refunds effective immediately,” By The Pier organisers revealed in a statement via social media this week.

“Due to a number of factors impacting on the financial sustainability of the event, including rising costs, increased competition and lower than expected sales, our not-for-profit community organisation cannot responsibly proceed with the event and put at risk significant financial losses.

“After such a successful debut event in 2022 we set out with high hopes in 2023. We have put a lot of time and effort into bringing something new and exciting to Queenscliff and despite our best efforts, it simply hasn’t worked. Our team are devastated and very sorry.

“We would like to thank everyone for their understanding and support in this decision.”
