As one of the most dominant midfielders on the field, Gary Ablett Jr quickly defied expectation that his father Gary Ablett Snr left on the club when he was drafted to the Cat club in 2001 under the father-son-rule. Throughout his ten year career, split between Geelong Cats and Gold Coast Suns, Gary Ablett Jnr went on to have a celebrated career. Overall Ablett is a dual premiership player, dual Brownlow Medallist, five-time Leigh Matthews Trophy winner, three-time AFLCA champion player of the year award winner and eight-time All-Australian.
During his first stint at Geelong, Ablett won two premierships, two Carji Greeves Medals, a Geelong leading goalkicker award and the 2009 Brownlow Medal. He is also a life member of the club and has been inducted into the club’s Hall of Fame. At Gold Coast, Ablett was the club’s inaugural captain, holding the role for the club’s first six seasons, and won four Gold Coast Suns Club Champion awards (including the first three in the club’s history), two Gold Coast leading goalkicker awards and the 2013 Brownlow Medal, the first Brownlow Medal in the club’s history.
A wealth of knowledge to the game, having played a whopping 357 games total throughout his career, Gary Ablett Jr has a lot of insights to offer when it comes to the Cat’s play and is an all-round great bloke to chat footy with.
Don’t miss a chance to meet the legend an hour before the bounce at 4.15pm on Saturday 21 September. Bookings are essential for the Sporting Globe special event. You can book and find out further details here.
