Von Stache

Let us catch you up: Von Stache is a local musician who happens to own a snazzy sparkly Gibson Flying V, has a new EP Ghost Face and also happens to hate ol’ V-Day and those three things make her the perfect musician to go see on February 13.

Hi Von Stache, thanks for taking the time to chat with Forte Magazine. How are you and what are you up to at the moment?

I’m great! Just hanging out having a lazy sunny Sunday arvo with some ciders.

So you’re got your appropriately titled “Love Makes Me Sick” show coming up on Valentines Day Eve, what do you dislike about V-Day?

EVERYTHING.

And clearly you won’t be doing much romantically on V-Day, what are your plans to celebrate (or not celebrate) the day?

Thanks for asking. I plan to be spend the day throwing up all over everything because I partied so hard at the GHOST FACE EP Launch at the Barwon Club. I trust you will all be doing the same?

While the show is an anti-celebration of the holiday, it’s also the launch for your EP, Ghost Face, which uses the same graphic on the poster. Is there a story behind that image at all?

There is a story behind it, but I’ll keep that under my hat and leave it up to the imagination.

The EP is also a further step into your new sound, how did you go putting this one together? Does this new style you’re rocking feel much more at home for you?

Much more at home! I wrote all the songs on guitar and wrote them quite quickly (for me). Usually, I struggle to finish songs, but this whole EP I just wrote, and put it out there without thinking too much – overthinking ruins things. The songs are more honest this way, more raw.

There seems to be an increase in female musicians, with Courtney Barnett leading the charge, what are your thoughts on the slow balancing out of females to males in the industry?

I don’t think there has been an increase at all. There are so many talented female musicians out there doing fantastic things, there always has and always will be – you just need to know where to look. I think women are always going to have to work harder to prove themselves, of course the music industry is no exception. Hopefully Courtney Barnett’s (well deserved) success opens up people’s eyes and inspires them to go out and discover some rad music they otherwise would not have experienced.

With your launch can punters expect a full run through? What else will be on the cards for the night?

I have a completely new live show. It is played as a duo with myself on guitar and my very talented friend Slick on the drums. Expect a complete EP run through, lots of booze, a bunch of bands ranging from indie to pop-punk, to progressive metal. The mysterious and angsty DJ Hatelove will be spinning a bunch of break up jams in-between bands.

There will even be traffic light wrist bands at the door: Green = single and good to go. Orange = maybe looking for love but maybe not. Red = hell no. Now you can let complete strangers know your relationship status from across the room. It takes out the complication and hassle of actually having to strike up a conversation.

Lastly, will your glorious Gibson Flying V be making an appearance?

‘Valentines’ starts with the letter ‘V’, and Valentines SUCKS. I might have to keep the ol’ V locked up for the night. I’ve been giving my Ibanez Roadcore a run at shows lately. It doesn’t quite burn everyone in the crowds retinas like the V does, but it gets the job done. Can’t win ’em all.

Thanks again for taking the time to chat with us, are there any last words of wisdom you’d like to share with our readers?

Party hard all the time, even when you are asleep.

When & Where: Barwon Club, Geelong – February 13 (aka V’day Eve)
