More musicians will have the opportunity to build their profile, make new music and perform in every corner of the state.

The Allan Labor Government is making a commitment to nurturing emerging musical talent across Victoria with the launch of new grants aimed at supporting musicians and local music acts.

Minister for Creative Industries, Colin Brooks, unveiled the latest round of the Victoria Music Works grants program, set to open applications on Thursday, 14 March. This initiative aims to empower musicians to expand their national and international reach, simultaneously bolstering local employment, fostering industry growth, and boosting Victoria’s economy.

“Victoria is Australia’s music heartland and the Allan Labor Government doesn’t take this for granted. We are proud to work with the industry to support music in Victoria,” says Brooks.

“We are proud to back in the people who power our music industry, from supporting rising stars to helping established artists take their careers to the next level, at home and around the world.”

This year’s grant programme introduces funding for artists in two novel categories, catering to different stages of artistic development and facilitating access for underrepresented groups within the industry.

Stream 1: Uncovering Talent is tailored to support early career artists and individuals from marginalized backgrounds, providing them with the resources and support needed to kickstart their musical journey.

Meanwhile, Stream 2: Evolve and Export aims to facilitate the expansion of Victorian artists into new markets, offering funding for projects geared towards international exposure.

Both categories include dedicated streams for First Peoples and Deaf and Disabled applicants alongside general streams, ensuring inclusivity and diversity within the grant programme.

Since its inception in 2015, the Government’s Music Works programme has supported over 800 music projects, with nearly $12 million invested to equip local artists and collectives with the necessary tools and skills to thrive in the music industry.

Open to artists and projects across all contemporary music genres, Music Works has propelled talents like The Teskey Brothers, Amyl and the Sniffers, RGV, and Julia Jacklin to showcase their music in Victoria and on international stages.

It has also provided support to First Peoples artists, including Bumpy, DJ Kidd Benny, and Kutcha Edwards, enabling them to distribute and promote their music, conduct workshops, and stage community events.

Applications for the new round of Music Works grants open on Thursday, 14th March, and close at 3 pm on Thursday, 18th April 2024.
