Flora is set to flourish in the Australian music scene, with her debut album the sign of things to come.
A debut album is the culmination of an emerging artist’s entire being as a musician, their stamp on who they are as an artist and a taste of who they will be as an artist. Add in the extra notion of the album being self-titled and you have yourself bonafide representation. For Victorian alt-folk/country artist Flora, the future is bright.
Gearing up to launch their self-titled debut album this month on Saturday 10 August at The Old Church on The Hill in Bendigo, it’s time to get to know Flora.

It’s rare for self-awareness and critical thinking to be placed with an artist in their early career, but Flora does this seamlessly. Flora’s self-titled debut album emerges in the alt-folk scene as a beacon of optimism and healing, intricately touching on themes of mental health and anti-capitalist ideologies in a uniquely introspective package. Honest and humble lyrics draw from their own personal life experiences and mental health challenges. Interwoven with experiences spending time with indigenous leaders at the Djab Wurrung embassy in 2018, fostering a connection to country that has forever sharped Flora’s writing. Their lyrics, inspired by a shared indigenous knowledge weave a tapestry of resilience and hope beautifully complimented by lush instrumentation from the banjo, fiddle and cello with supporting soft double bass, washy drums and robust electric guitar. The end result is a beautifully crafted body of work that exceeds Flora’s youthful years.
The album launch will feature all tracks from the debut album, led by Flora on vocals and guitar, supported by Jaspar Austin-Gray (bass), Geordie Scarce (banjo), Ethan Ng (electric guitar), Anthony Dohrman (drums), Lara Prokop (cello) and Kirily Ashford (vocals). Opening acts include the Double Dole Stringband playing innovative and old-time tunes. Holding down the fiddle, banjo, mandolin, guitar, and vocals both sweet and rowdy, they’ve become stalwarts at venues around their borrowed hometown of Naarm/Melbourne, as well as folk festivals across the country.
The band ventured into the studio in winter 2024 to record their first full-length album, which they’re excited to share with the world. When they’re not writing and performing original tunes, you can find them playing high energy bushdances, running inclusive old-time sessions, and picking into the wee hours. Followed by Mia Mazzarella, a local singer/songwriter brings her folkish originals along with her take on some well known covers in a set that will take you on the emotional ride of youthful living and loving.
