Valhalla Taproom announces temporary closure due to significant venue damage

For now, Valhalla will extend the trading hours of our sister venue Medusa Bar to match regular trading hours of Valhalla, hold pop-up gigs and events and to run free delivery specials across the region

Geelong-based brew legends Valhalla Brewing has been dealt a massive blow this month, with the venue announcing a temporary closure due to significant damage to the beloved Union Street taproom.

Announced in a post to social media this week, Valhalla revealed that sewage has flooded and contaminated the venue, with a high likelihood of the venue fit-out needing replacing.

“On Sunday night we had an incident in the venue caused by a lack of overflow relief gully in our building which resulted in a surge of sewage coming up through our toilets, flooding and contaminating the venue,” Valhalla shared.

“We are in the early stages of cleaning and assessing the damage with various insurances. Initial outlooks for the immediate future are not ideal, and at this stage there is the real possibility a significant portion of the venue fit-out may need to be removed and rebuilt which would see us unable to trade from Union Street for the immediate future.”

Located in Geelong’s Union Street (in the building with the striking mural of musicians Jay-Z and Beyonce on the side wall), owner Scott Hunt opened this venue – Valhalla’s very first dedicated taproom – back in December of 2018.

A favourite in the local brewing scene, Valhalla’s closure will see an increase in trading hours at sister venue Medusa Bar, located just around the corner at the end of the iconic Rock O’Cashel Lane.

“In terms of our trade for this time, our current plans are to extend the trading hours of our sister venue Medusa Bar to match regular trading hours of Valhalla, hold pop-up gigs and events and to run free delivery specials across the region. Please keep an eye across social media channels of both Valhalla Taproom and Medusa bar to stay in the loop as these specials and events are announced.”

“It is no secret that current cost of living pressures are significant, but we ask that where possible you keep an eye on upcoming events, take advantage of our delivery specials or pay us a visit at Medusa for a quick drink, a takeaway or even just to say hi. We have always been humbled by our punters desire to support not only us, but all local producers and we know this will continue. Small businesses everywhere have dealt with considerable barriers to trade in recent years, particularly those specialising in on-premise hospitality. Coming through that has made us incredibly resilient and optimistic about our immediate future, despite the concern this particular incident has caused.”

Alongside the increased hours at Medusa, Valhalla have also put up some deals on its products through Beermoth, with free shipping around Geelong, and free shipping over $50 for Bellarine and the Surfcoast.
