Upcoming gigs on the Surf Coast you can’t miss now that capacity restrictions are easing for live music venues

Words by Savannah Selimi

Restrictions have just eased for Victorian small-to-medium-sized live music venues.

There’s nothing that compares to catching a gig on the Surf Coast. While the city boasts larger crowds and trams at the doorsteps of every venue, our favourite Surf Coast venues embrace good vibes that are simply unmatched. I mean, where else do the sounds of blasted guitar and eager mosh pits battle the sounds of waves crashing against the shore?

Thankfully, the live music scene is making a marvellous return all over the Coast, and from Friday, May 28, the density quotient of one person per two square metres will be lifted for small-to-medium-sized Victorian venues in spaces that are 400 square metres or below… which means these venues will be able to have up to 200 people per space (such as a dining room or bandroom) without any density limit, provided the venue has COVID marshals on-site to ensure punters are checking in to each space. The change will concern venues such as live music venues, restaurants, bars and nightclubs. Read the full Victorian government announcement here.

If you’re devo to have missed the likes of The Chats or Byron Bay’s Babe Rainbow, no need to worry. Here are a few upcoming gigs to look out for.

THE RUBENS – TORQUAY HOTEL 11 & 12 JUNE

If you’re into alternative rock, there’s a high chance you’ve heard of The Rubens. The five-piece band have established a name for themselves in their career spanning almost a decade. They recently released their much-anticipated album ‘0202’, composed of hit tunes like ‘Live in Life’. Performing at the Torquay Hotel this June, The Rubens are sure to pump the crowd with their electric ambience.

With two shows, tickets to their newly announced show on June 12 are currently on sale here.

THELMA PLUM – TORQUAY HOTEL 18 & 19 JUNE

Australia’s answer to the sounds of Taylor Swift, Thelma Plum is making waves in the Australian music scene. Her music, a soothing compilation of folk and pop, has swept the charts. With wholehearted lyrics that bite back and hypnotic instrumentals, it’s no wonder her debut album ‘Better in Blak’ peaked at No. 4 on the ARIA Album Charts. Plum is set to perform an awe-inspiring show at Torquay Hotel on Friday, June 18 and Saturday, June 19, with tickets sold out at the time of writing. DIDIRRI – THE BARWON CLUB HOTEL JUNE 18

Warrnambool’s Didirri is blessing Victoria with a few shows this May and June. The indie-folk artist toured with Hozier back in 2019, stunning audiences with his soothing vocals and poetic lyrics that pull the heartstrings. Proclaiming his songs as ‘music for lovers and over-thinkers’, Dirirri will be performing at the Barwon Club Hotel on June 18. You can purchase tickets here

SAN CISCO – TORQUAY HOTEL JUNE 30 & JULY 1

Triple J royalty San Cisco have been at the forefront of the Aussie indie music scene since their formation in 2009. One way to accurately describe the Fremantle outfit’s sound is: rhythmic. Listening to San Cisco means having a conscious agreement to have their upbeat guitar melodies (‘Awkward’) and catchy choruses (‘Too Much Time Together’) stuck on repeat in your head. Nonetheless, this beloved Aussie band are sure to perform an incredible show at Torquay Hotel this July. This one’s gonna go quick, so get in fast.

Tickets to the second show on Wednesday, June 30 are on sale here.
