Having gained widespread acclaim thanks to his 2016 album The Party which earned him a Polaris Music Prize nomination, Andy Shauf pole-vaulted thanks to appearances on the likes of Jimmy Kimmel Live! and CBS This Morning. Following up with 2020’s The Neon Skyline, Shauf showed he was not a one-trick pony. The Neon Skyline kept to Shauf’s mesmorising storytelling-scapes, full to the brim with colourful characters, fine details and emotional depth.

Moving into Norm, Andy Shauf detaches from his narrative form, adding new and interesting layers and perspectives. Appearing as jazz-infused romantic ballads, Shauf’s storytelling borders on ominous and haunting, entering into an unpredictable universe.

Shauf enlisted Neal Pogue (Tyler, the Creator, Janelle Monáe, OutKast) to mix the album, enhancing its ethereal, synth-laden atmospherics. During this period, Shauf was captivated by David Lynch’s Mulholland Drive, which validated his instinct to blend perspectives and explore shadowy narratives. He rewrote the album’s original lyrics and enlisted Nicholas Olson as a story editor. Only after writing the title track did Shauf decide to centre the narrative around the character Norm. “Norm is introduced in a subtle way,” Shauf explains. “But as you delve deeper into the album, you’ll find a darker undercurrent.”

A concept album by form, Norm also dips into explorations of faith and fatalism whilst leaving open-ended moralising to the listener to decipher the meanings for ourself. It’s bound to translate impeccably to the stage, leaving audiences reeling through the immersive experience.

Sydney, Brisbane and Perth shows are on sale Friday 30 Aug 10 am (local), with presale from Thurday 29 Aug 10 am (local) via Handsometours.com. All other shows are on sale now.
