Tkay Maidza: TKAY

It’s been a pretty whirlwind time for Tkay, and the now 20-year-old has released her debut album, TKAY. Known for speed of light rapping style in which she seems unaffected by the banalities of needing to breathe, her music fuses a dance-ready sound with grime, trap, African beats and more. It’s a release where Tkay takes charge and flexes everything she’s learnt in her short career. Perhaps it’s even more fitting with the releases title and her strong profile front and centre.

‘Afterglow’ is a highlight, and a no-brainer with its significant airplay. It offers a lighter side of Tkay with a falsetto and incredibly catchy chorus. It’s a more pop-heavy release on the album and is juxtaposed against following track, ‘Carry On’, which is a beat heavy, warbling number with no falsetto to be heard. Highlights come with ‘Monochrome’ with a dirty beat and the truest showcase of Tkay’s speedy rapping abilities. Something which sets her apart in the Australian hip hop scene at the moment. ‘Castle in the Sky’ slows things down, adding another notch to Tkay’s belt, while ‘You Want’ is a slow-burner, dance number. Overall it’s an impressive release that showcases her versatility and talent.
