Attracting more than 100,000 visitors of all ages in the past, the event will see the Victorian-style buildings along the main street come alive through the magic of large-scale light projections, and Christmas animations. This show, set to Christmas-themed music by a good old-fashioned brass band, is sure to be bigger and brighter than ever before with more buildings lit up in impressive style, evoking the spirit and enchantment of Christmas. Plus, as always, there will be faux snow falling and that’s pretty magical in itself.

Continue exploring with a trail of over 18km of fairy lights that will be on display around Sovereign Hill. Start from the top end of Main Street and meander through our picturesque Speedwell Street and Brightview Gardens. Then make your way around the Sovereign Hill lake, where you’ll find illuminated animal sculptures and tunnels before getting a photo with jolly St Nick inside his traditional winter hut.

This year there will also be ‘Digging After Dark’, where guests can grab some food and sit around the fire as soundscapes transport you back to a typical night on the diggings, complete with sing-a-longs, police raids and evening sounds.

While the nighttime is a true spectacle worth seeing, during the day the entire Sovereign Hill township will evoke a sense of old-world Christmas wonder, Visitors can stroll down Main Street as decorations fill the window displays, the smell of Christmas treats and spices fill the air, and traditional Christmas-themed pantomimes are performed. For the kids, there will be hands-on art and craft sessions.

These activities are all included in a day pass to the Winter Wonderlights, however, if you’re looking to level up your experience there are also several paid activities on offer including the ‘Late Night Wonderlights’. Described as Winter Wonderlights but not as you know it, this event kicks off at 8pm on Friday, July 15 and will see all the snow, lights and wintery delights of the iconic event but with some twists. There will also be a tasty Winter Wonderlights dinner, with a delicious two-course meal, that will run every day throughout the festival.

We imagine the cottages and gardens overlooking Main Street will also be filled with fairy lights, and candles will dance in shop windows, so no matter where you look, the old-world charm of the 1850s will bask Sovereign Hill in a golden, Yuletide glow. Entertainers, including illusionists and acrobats, will also perform, delighting visitors with their magical skills.

This magical event truly transforms Ballarat into a living, traditional Christmas postcard scene.

The magical Christmas event takes over Sovereign Hill from 25 June – 17 July 2022. Check out the full program here and purchase tickets here.
