If you’re a fan of the custard slab, you best put Birchip in your maps because a humble bakery in the northwest Victorian town has just been crowned Australia’s best.
Sharp’s Bakery, a mere three and a half-hour drive from Geelong, has taken out the title for the annual competition, The Great Australian Vanilla Slice Triumph 2022.
This marks the fifth time the bakery has taken out the glorious title, having also won the accolade in 2009, 2012, 2014 and 2016.
Sharp’s Bakery has been owned and Operated by Kevin, Gail and the Sharp Family since 1977, while the smooth vanilla custard treat has been perfected by Brad Sharp, who carefully crafts the treat from the early hours of the morning each day. With incredible attention to detail, the Vanilla Slice is a perfectly balanced combination of light, spongy pastry, sweet custard and glossy icing.
With Sharp’s Bakery taking out the top prize, Victoria is clearly Australia’s capital of the creamy log of goodness with Hudaks Bakery in Mildura earning second prize and North End Bakehouse in Shepparton coming in third.

A credit to their delectable treat, the Sharp’s Bakery also was named Australia’s best vanilla slice at the Baking Association of Australia’s annual Baking competition earlier in the year, so you can bet it’s probably worthy of the roadtrip.
