Beloved bakery in Ocean Grove crowned the title of Australia’s Best Pie for the second year in a row

A local bakery has come out on top in one of the most important events on the 2022 calendar; one that seeks to answer the burning question of ‘who is dishing up Australia’s best pie’.

Any Geelong local or general Victorian pie enthusiast knows Rolling Pin Pies and Cakes as one of the best (if not THE best) places to go to get your hands on a humble meat pie. Biting into one of their creations of flaky, buttery crust and getting a mouthful of juicy, piping hot goodness is nothing short of heaven.

Located in Ocean Grove, with stores in Leopold and Queenscliff and just recently South Geelong, the esteemed bakery once again dominated at the Baking Association of Australia’s annual competition in Sydney, taking out the much-coveted title of Australia’s Best Pie.

With thousands of entries from more than 300 Aussie bakeries across dozens of categories and three days of crucial taste testing, the judges declared Ocean Grove’s Rolling Pin Pies and Cakes the winner of the coveted prize with their Creamy Mushroom and Truffle pie. Yes a vegetarian pie has been crowned THE best in Australia.

The local bakery took out the worthy title last year with their Surf & Turf pie, taking over from reigning champion Country Cob bakery who had taken out the top spot in the competition between 2018 to 2020.

Going up against some of the best bakeries around the country, Rolling Pin Pies and Cakes also took out first place class prize in the Seafood Pie category, first place class prize in the Mushroom Pie category (with the same pie crowned Australia’s best) plus medals awarded in the plain mince beef pie, chunky beef pie, poultry pie, seafood pie, gourmet, traditional pasties, gourmet pasties, and flavoured beef pie categories. All up, they took away three gold medals, 11 silver medals and one bronze medal, which is quite impressive.

“OMG mind blown again!! We’ve just been judged Australia’s Best Pie for the second year in a row,” the bakery said in a post to social media.

“The new creation Creamy Mushroom and Truffle first took out the Mushroom category and was then moments later announced overall competition winner. I know right! A mushroom pie winning Australia’s Best Pie. Who would’ve thought…. We are off the charts pumped!

“Oh yeah and we also took out the Seafood section with a Thai Red Curry Prawn. Woohoo!!”

This proud locally owned and family business has been dishing out the best pie and pastries since 1997, when Ocean Grove locals Geoff and Susie Chalker took ownership of Rolling Pin Pies & Cakes. Geoff and Susie’s dream of a true family run business was realised when their daughter Kristy joined them in 2004 and much to their delight, the team expanded to include their other daughter Stacey, and their two sons-in-law Nathan Williams (now Rolling Pin manager) and Todd Lincoln.  Their five grandchildren are the official taste testers – lucky humans.

Following huge demand for the winning pie and an unfortunately timed equipment breakdown, the bakery revealed the next batch of Australia’s Best Pies will hit stores again on Tuesday, June 7.

Locals can indulge in the award-winning pie from Rolling Pin Pies and Cakes in Leopold, Ocean Grove, South Geelong and Queenscliff. Find out more info here.
