Third Eye-Tool Tribute Live at Karova Lounge

Having been a fan of Tool since my formative music playing years, it was with eager interest that I headed to Karova for a night of their legendary music.

I tried to do my homework on these guys and ended up watching an American Tool Tribute band with the same name. Come on Pitman you had one job! But on the night I realised this was a completely different experience. Most punters who appreciate Tool also definitely appreciate just how difficult their music is to play, and to realise all of a sudden that these lads from Melbourne were giving it a real crack was a great surprise.

The night was billed as a visual and audio experience, and whilst Third Eye’s effort to create amazing visuals was held back by technical difficulties with the venues set up, nothing held back from the music. The lads eased the crowd in and soon took the fans on a barrage of some of the bands bigger hits with Stinkfist, Sober and Forty Six and Two dominating the early set.

Towards the end of the set, new singer Cameron McKay stepped away from the stage for some time, with the group moving into some of the more instrumental songs. Elliot Steele and his wailing guitar solos rip the crowd into the 2nd set with Parabola. This is followed by Tim Rees work on the intricate bass lines to start Schism, which blow many away. Throughout the night Matt Servelli treats the audience to his drumming skills, mixing between the slamming forces of some songs and the electronic precision for Eulogy.

Some people don’t think Tool is relevant anymore (too long between albums blah blah blah)… but you know what? Hearing these four lads pour their hearts into Hooker with a Penis reminds you of why you fell in love with Tool to begin with and why these guys deserve you turning up to hear them.
